  • This week we are able to get the Holocaust violin set up and played. We also start the task of strengthening the top of a 1700's violin which had 52 cleats in the top. There is also a controversy which is addressed. Freddie has a little chat and there is also an Hebrew Minute. Enjoy!

your smile and upbeat speaking is so wonderful to listen to, so enjoyable to listen to - the ''tone''' is so rich and full, almost like a viola quality to that violin

Thank you! I’m from The Netherlands. I was recently given a violin (probably German, early 19th century) that is now being restored. As my violin knowledge is virtually non-existent, I started looking and came across your great channel. Also a great week to you and looking forward to new episodes!

I think the 1700's violin had cleats on the cleats, I've never seen so many. The 'Holocaust Violin' really moves the air! Mr. Freany's 3 console organ is really nice, wow. The varied talents of your subscribers is amazing also. Thanks for sharing another busy week in your violin shop. Stupidicus.

Thank you for saving the violin of hope. It is so beautiful . Our family has a violin that my husband inherited from his grandfather that looks very similar to this violin of hope. It has decorative inlays on the back and the same abalone design on the finger board that the one you restored does. All we know about it is that it was made between 1890s- 1920's, in Germany. It was in really bad shape, and had been played so much that the finger board had deep grooves in it, and pits in the wood from the incredible rosin build up. We had it restored last year and the more it is played, the more beautiful she sounds. I would be interested to see if you might be able to possibly offer more information on this violin. All we know is that it is very possible that another relative may have brought it back from Germany at some point after WWI.

Each violin has its very own unique story. These violins were not that expensive when they were made, but they have gained value in that they went through the holocaust and survived. These violins ranged anywhere from 3 to $12 at that time. If only the violin could talk! Thank you for reaching out and if you have any further questions please feel free to contact me at violinsforu@gmail.com.

I just found your videos and I'm so happy I did! I've been considering going into lutherie and repair and you are a wealth of information, thank you so much! Heres a small thing that I noticed if youre wanting to reach more people. The video I originally found was #105 but you had forgotten to put the number on it. I think maybe if you put the number at the end of the title, it might make it easier for people to find your channel! The algorithms can be finicky like that.

Mr. Freaney built a virtual organ . It is beautiful! I am sorry to hear Amnon Weinstine just died. Some of the violins he collected had cremation ashes in them. His collection of holocoust violins is a wonderful and great legacy. We will miss him. I met him at his shop in Israel.

I think what makes it so special isn't only that it's a survivor of the holocaust, but what that actually means. The people behind its survival. It only got here because someone cared enough about it to protect, to hide it. Who knows what kind of hardships they went through so that it could survive until today?

    • @Violinsforu2

would replacing a thin fingerboard with a newer thicker board increase volume? basically increasing the action.

It could definitely improve the tone but you have to be careful to have a balance. Too much ebony can also dampen a bit. There are so many factors involved but every little bit helps. Thank you for writing and I hope you have a great week!

There are a few out there, but you need to be careful, because they can be overpriced, because many of them were lower quality violins and they need to be revoiced to get a good tone. Thank you for asking and hope you have a great week!
