I love it when ppl know the names and details of the real story a Law & Order episode is based on. I remember the real story. That woman was a piece of work! I cannot believe she actually got married and had 3 kids. SHM! I wondered if she never met her first husband would she have been such a disgusting human being.
@@CC-si3cr She married the brother of her attorney, meaning he knew exactly what she was, which makes me wonder what kind of man he is. Karla was far more intelligent than Paul (she applied her veterinary knowledge of anesthesia and dismemberment to the crimes). Karla unalived one of the victims out of jealousy because Paul let the victim drink from a glass they received as a wedding gift. IMO Karla Homolka isn't a true psychopath in the sense that she has a mental illness; she's just evil, plain and simple. Ellen Pompeo did a good job. The girl gives me creeps and seems like a real psychopath. She's a convincing 'victim' until the very last minute and when she finally drops the act...whew.
It's called: being a criminal. This sort of scheme is illegal. In the real world, Jack McCoy would either be behind bars, or running for president as a Republican. Let's be honest. these days, it's the same thing.
I would love for there to be a full-blown crossover of the original Law & Order and SVU, where the characters of each series collaborate throughout the entire episode(s) to solve the case and bring justice.
The problem is the two shows are very different. The original L&O episodes are based on real cases and they're far more clinical and serious in their approach. SVU on the other hand felt more like a detective drama involving the detective's personal life. I prefer the original because the SVU can be very annoying and unrealistic it felt like a fanfic.
I didn’t know Ellen was in another episode of Law & Order. I just remember the one about her mom being killed or something and she ended up being involved.
This episode was one of two in Season 10 that helped introduce broader audiences to Law and Order SVU: The SVU detectives appeared in back-to-back crossover episodes (Entitled and Fools for Love).
I didn't know a judge could take away a plea deal. So a defendant could tell the police/prosecution what they want, in exchange for a deal, only to then have it taken away? Maybe that's why some murderers have rejected a plea deal in exchange for the location of the victim's body.
I don't think it happens very often, because plea bargains are considered pretty important by the prosecutors, but I also don't think they would have put it in this episode if it *couldn't* happen. It notably did not happen in the real world incident that inspired this episode, despite the outrage that caused when it became apparent that Karla Homolka was a willing participant in the crimes.
There was another episode where they did this (L&O S16 E1 “Red Ball”). The defendant kidnapped a 5-yr-old to sell her to a pedø, but he got arrested. No way to find the kid, b/c everyone else who knew where the girl was was dead. The deal was time served in exchange for the location of the child & finding her alive. McCoy agreed. They found her. The judge refused to honor the deal stating plainly, “You had no deal with me, Mr. Jacobs!” Guy exploded & tried to attack McCoy, but he was dragged away. It was epic.
Would need an actual lawyer in the given jurisdiction to explain what is and isnt allowed but one of the reasons Cosby got let go is because he made a deal and a new prosecutor many years later tried to go back on it.
Technically, this was fiction based on the murder of Tammy-Lynn Holmolka, Karla Holmolka’s younger sister. Prior to the murders of Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy.
If only the real-life case had ended this way. Unfortunately, the Canadian "justice" system is too stupid... Just look at what's happening with Paul Bernardo.
Once again stripped from the headlines. This is without a doubt based on Carla Holmolka and Paul Bernardo. I haven’t seen this episode but the sweater line is eerily similar to something Karla said during her video walk thru at their house.
Yes it is and only difference that Laura Kendrick will be spending a very long time in prison while Holmolka got out after 12 years and she is living her life, married and has 3 children.

I agree. Ellen was so creepy!
And the other time she guest starred on L&O, she also played a killer who targeted a family member!
Creepier still, it's based on a true story that happened a few hours from where I grew up.
