This is a fantastic demo for my second grader, and he will be entering the science fair with this one. However I have , few notes that helped me with this one, and may help you as well. First, I had a hard time getting the ziti pasta to stand on end, especially as the bubbles flowed up directly under the lid, lifting it, and up through the hole too. What I did to solve this was to drill the hole just barely large enough to squeeze the pasta noodle inside to hold it in place. Second, I noticed that if you let the peroxide and yeast to react for 1-2 minutes, the O2 gas stream was strongest. I had no problem getting the rocket exhaust to create a fine and even plume over 4 inches long. Sometimes it would even give us the pop pop pop rocket sounds. Thanks for this Night Hawk!
lostunsunghero That's alright. I was kidding about the electric rocket. It was a play on the automotive hybrid vs electric thing. I've done plenty of ion propulsion myself - low thrust but fun.
Very interesting. When we were teenagers, my older buddy discovered one of the most powerful and easy-to-make solid fuels: a simple mixture (not a chemical compound) of sulphur dust and zinc dust (I forget the all-important ratio, something like 2:1 sulphur to zinc). He would stuff a PVC pipe with it and mostly they would explode almost a thousand feet into the air, but a couple actually powered their way there, with a maroon-coloured flame and and satisfying deep roar to boot! (The last one had tilted over and was powering its way towards a semi-major road with afternoon traffic on it! Luckily it fell short.) I looked up this fuel around that time (the early 1970's) and found that it had more thrust than petrol + liquid oxygen!
Thinking about trying this with a 20 gallon drum (with a lid and a hole on the side of the drum) of hydrogen peroxide and 2 pounds of yeast with a 3ft long 6inches diameter steel pipe on the side and sit on the top and light a spark. Guys im going to the moon or the ER.
That is brilliant, I knew about Yeast and Hydrogen Peroxide producing Oxygen. Yet never seen it used in such an innovative way... Awesome... Just Awesome...
I did this a couple minuets ago, hears a couple quick thoughts, i sealed my can completly to maximize the amount of gas being released from the hole. You need the pasta piece because the gas needs to be ignited, and using tubing instead of pasta wont keep the gas lit. Another thought: It does not last long, the flame lasts as long as the pasta is of course, but the gas will go away quickly, using more peroxide and yeast will increase in time. If i can only maximize this project to make it so pasta does not have to be used. Thank you Nighthawkinlight. You made my evening enjoyable.
that could be fixed simply by having a cone around the pasta noodle that directs the blast into a chamber. essentially what this is is a pilot light tho lol
I'm glad I just found this I accidentally Spilt some dry pasta on to the gas Hob when I was boiling some pasta at the end I found it As crispy charcoal Was wondering if it would be any good for Gunpowder Pasta seems to be pretty energetic When you burn it Just as dry pasta so Maybe it could be good for blackpowder
2 questions: How long does it take for a noodle to expire, and how long does it take for the peroxide/yeast mixture to expire? It seems you could replace the noodle a number of times before running out of that much peroxide.
Is the interior of the fuel grain burning, or just the very tip? Unless the temperature and pressure increase inside the nozzle, there's not going to be much, if any, thrust due to the burning.
Can I use pure oxygen gas from a hydrolyzer I built (water splitter) or is that more dangerous? I am assuming it is the same, but just wanted to know. Would a tube made of a flour based paste that was hardened work too? Could a colorant be added to one (boric acid) if you made a tube yourself? I made a hydroxy torch once, but it backfired alot due to no seperation of fuel and oxygen, iv learned since then.
Woah. Another awesome video! Just curious, what could we use as a catalyst to decompose oxygen instead? Wouldn't hydrogen be a bigger bang for our buck, so to speak - or would it react too violently when we light it?
could you use something other than the pasta to get a continuous burn without having to replace the pasta? how long will the jar burn say if the pasta didn't burn out?
I heard that during ww2 German and Italian scientists met to collaborate on rockets. The Italian team demonstrated one of these. The Germans just shook their heads and told them they'd get back to them.
@Evi1M4chine, in space, stopping the flow of oxidizer would stop the reaction, so in space (or any non oxygen- or oxidiser-rich atmosphere), this engine would be controllable
Not sold on the rocket engine, just a pasta blow torch. But conceptually yes. I was hoping before the video started that this would launch some model rockets.
The latest from the Italian space program.
XDDDDD
This was 9 years ago, why do i feel bad
One day I will become the world's first pasta astronaut. Thank you for the inspiration NightHawkInLight
Send me a postcard!
you mean ... a pastronaut.
Alexander666W An opportunity squandered. What a shame.

Very cool, great tips!
NightHawkInLight i'm creating a thorium breeder reactor you should make one to!
+mccowc0w radioactive boyscout.
Google it.

now go back under your rock, Troll.
Pasta rockets - I can really see this taking off. :)
man, that pun was out of this world.
Too bad because he said it can’t thrust itself because obvious reasons. But, you could completely change the design of it to actually work
@@colsoncustoms8994 It's full of pasta-bilities.
👌
At first I was like...why is he lighting that milkshake???
Drinking that would have been a nasty surprise for sure!
Sam DT Smells fine, the yeast over takes the smell
one could consider that a..... 'seriously strange' thing to do :p
NickBlackDIN
no!!!
Cool seeing you and ATC here
Hybrid? I'm holding out til Elon Musk makes an all electric one. :) Seriously, though. This is cool. That's one super easy way to isolate oxygen.

lol i get it

Great video!!! :D
lol subbed to AT10, NHIL, and HH for about 6months now.
Dash X i think he means Household Hacker
I love how you show the finished product before the instructions
now a bunch of highschool kids got a free first prize in the science fair
I now can dominate the world with my macaroni missiles
Working on a similar project and as a joke put together a pasta rocket. Pretty awesome to see a full setup xD. Good work!
Rocket engines, sick music, and the usual NightHawkInLight awesomeness. I really liked this video, good job.
I'd like to see +Nighthawkinlight try and make a rocket powered by this.
my son is going to love this!
You inherited the spirit of Nurdrage
That's pretty cool although I was hoping for something that actually flew
I just tried it and it worked somewhat good :) I think I just need more Peroxide and in in the money!
i just love how the flame loooks
i really like studying maps in my basement, but this really brings out my passions. thankkssss ssoooo much
not a very powerful rocket. should be called spaghetti candle.
Moms spaghetti candle
Knees weak arms are heavy candle
but it's powered in the same way as a rocket
that could be fixed simply by having a cone around the pasta noodle that directs the blast into a chamber.
essentially what this is is a pilot light tho lol
Macaroni
best one of your vids in my opinion I've been wanting to produce pure oxygen for the longest time and now I can thank you

Awesome experiment to do with my kids. thanks for the ideas. I really appreciate your contributions.
Very cool, I hope it proves educational!
I tried it. Really neat decomposition reaction.
this is awesome! just used it as my school science project and got an A!!!11

Just made a mini rocket with this. Works great
THIS IS THE STUFF I LIKE FROM YOU GUYS :D
The pasta rocket thumbnail just cracked me up
Don't worry about me I'm just going to power my rocket with pasta.
cool video as always :) but seriously are you a science teacher?
Damn that's great I wished Id know this when my kids were little, that would have amazed them.
All of your vids are awsome
cool stuff dude. edible ice spheres still my fav thing uve done. and i actually made it
I would like a side of marinara with my pasta rocket please!
***** Ian he's a fake look at his vids
i meant the channel you replied to, that's a fake kipkay , and your"re right kipkay is awesome BTW the fake kipkay even uses the real ones Google+
Oh snap! That looks awesome! Subbed.
Is the interior of the fuel grain burning, or just the very tip? Unless the temperature and pressure increase inside the nozzle, there's not going to be much, if any, thrust due to the burning.
Need 50000000 lbs pasta. I am so going to the moon.
Try the Burritos methane rocket it has higher ISP
It's a bird. It's a plane. No, it's a pasta noodle!
Pastafarians rejoice, we now have the means to meat our creator.
Seems there's an early contender for best comment! Hahaha
When happened to the hydrogen? Isn't that supposedly flammable as well? Sorry if it's a stupid question.
I’m doing this experiment for class it’s really cool
i used this in a school project i got a a thanks nighthawk
Hey, if I do this, will the noodle melt and the fire go away? or will it be sucked into the jar and explode?
Really need to know. please and thanks
Dude that’s lit, this video was fire 🔥
Does it release any harmful fumes along with the oxygen? And is the oxygen pure?
Sounds like a metal band. Pasta Rocket!

Are there any other alternatives to the noodle. Would cardboard work? Any other ideas?
Cool, That is the thrust of this engine?
Integza: *I'LL TAKE YOUR ENTIRE STOCK!*
Woah. Another awesome video! Just curious, what could we use as a catalyst to decompose oxygen instead? Wouldn't hydrogen be a bigger bang for our buck, so to speak - or would it react too violently when we light it?
for a metal foundry could i use this reaction for a oxygen source
+harry larson yes
+harry larson Why though? Atmospheric is way better.
Thank you!
could you use something other than the pasta to get a continuous burn without having to replace the pasta? how long will the jar burn say if the pasta didn't burn out?
Mixing pasta and anti-pasta for an explosive culinary delight
Awesome video, thanks for sharing...
You can also use a long macaroni to make a small one time use blow torch :D
Does that produce any actual thrust or is it just a fancy candle
Cool. Thanks for posting this.
It's cool how the hydrogen peroxide mixed with the yeast, makes a chemical reaction and how the pasta with fire made a rocket.
Awwww... Snap! He added music! (wait hasn't he done that before?) Yes I suppose so but never the rowdy rock'n electric guitar before! :>
Ben its nice to see you coming back close to your video roots with fireworks. I know its not really fireworks but its close.
Can I just use aluminum foil instead of the thing they put on top of the jar and make a hole in it??
How long the chemical reaction last?
Italy needs to see this and start a space program.
Does this build thrust? if so, how much? and what materials in your opinion would best replace the pasta if need be?
could made a practical survival burner to cook food (use steel tubing rather than pasta) or a light source for power failures and stuff
that pasta is for the solid fuel
You too are inspiring me, thanks!
Can this melt steel beams?
Yes, but sadly not icecream.
Cameron Does Things dang
Nice inert flamewar fuel
test
can we use the mason jar for drinking juice or something after doing the experiment???
cool video. What else can you use in place of a pasta tube that would allow you to burn longer?
nice!!!
do i need to use pasta? or what is a substitute for pasta?
I've also seen an article saying they used oxygen and bacon, and were able to cut thin sheet metal.
That is so cool! Thanks.
Italian Space Agency: *sweats profusely*
love your vids
You make so good videos!
A new way to cook pasta
italian space program
Not sold on the rocket engine, just a pasta blow torch. But conceptually yes. I was hoping before the video started that this would launch some model rockets.
Would it matter if it was instant yeast are they both the same thing. I've tried it with instant yeast and it didn't work.
Yo that is awesome im doing that tomorrow
love your work
Fancy new tune I see, i like it
Pretty damn cool but would it be safe to light a cigarette off this flame? Anyways awesome vid n keep up da good work!
Could you put a metal tube instead of the pasta for a lasting flame?
I wonder if this is hot enough to melt through a pop can...
Haha Tight! :)
can i cook food with it? Such as the rest of that pasta?
Now that's one way to light a cigar lol how long does it allow you to burn for?
Interesting expirement
