    Thanks Kamon! I have been feeding packages 1:1 since installation to build comb. Now I have 4 supers of capped sugar syrup, in addition to their reserves in 2 deeps. Can I reasonably expect them to consume it to free up the comb for the real thing or should it be uncapped and “bee cleaned” for winter storage? Thanks for your advice.

    • @timurich4270
      @timurich4270 5 років тому +1

      If you are in an area that will get a fall nectar flow, you can extract your 3rd box sugar frames and put them back into your supers empty. Your bees will refill the comb with honey. For a hobbyist beekeeper, w/o much drawn comb on hand, this is an excellent strategy for getting a fall honey crop. If you don't want to extract them all, choose the middle 5 frames from each super and extract the sugar from just them. This doesn't answer your question about storage, but it's a strategy for more honey.

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  5 років тому

      Yeah extracting the supers might be a good idea. Save the extracted syrup for feeding in the future or makeing queen candy or pollen patties

  • @davidkoch733

    I added an ultra pollen patty and they didn't touch it. It was 1/2 cup of water, 1/2 sugar and 1 cup of ultra bee pollen and a drop of Honeybee Healthy. We do have star thistle happening now but that seems like nectar. Any thoughts on why they are not taking it.

    • @darkeblue
      @darkeblue 5 років тому +1

      IMO, you could have made it 1 cup of sugar. The drop of honey B is a nice touch, but maybe make it 2 drops. Maybe they have a better pollen coming in. OH...you need to add some fats! A teaspoon of Corn Oil or Canola...that way it doesn't dry up as fast.

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  5 років тому +1

      Probably got too dry to quick and I would also say not sweet enough. Patty recipes are typically very high in sugar, syrups, or honey. Our recipes are much higher in sugar than they are in ultrabee

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  5 років тому

      Hi from Tennessee! Thanks for watching our videos!
      We don't treat for chalkbrood. We selectively breed only from queens that show no signs of chalkbrood. Once we started raising our own queens, issues with European foul brood and chalkbrood became less and less common in our apiary as we selected for resistance.

    Kamon, I noticed in your video that you said to put the patties above the nurse bees. I have a top bar hive so I pulled the sugar syrup and just put the pattie where the jars sit. That are eating it but it makes me wonder if the nurse bees are getting enough. I don't have a roof for my hive yet. Jusy a piece of plywood so I can't really lay the pattie on top. Should I shim it or do you think they're ok. They have brood and larvae and are just starting to cap nectar??? I've had them for 2 mo

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  5 років тому

      First are your bees bring in much pollen? Also, I try no to give them what take over 5 days for them to consume due to small hive beetles. Giving the bees more room to consume the patty does allow them to take it in faster. If you have a honey flow they might build Burr comb in that space. Lots of variables I know!

  • @natserog

    on pollen patties....do you have any small hive beetle issues? So even feed them pollen in middle of summer?

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  5 років тому

      We have all kinds of beetles here and they will eat your patties but our strong hives guard and eat the patties quickly. We can't throw giant patties but they will handle 1.5 lbs at a time if you know what your doing and the bees are ready for it
