I got 2 packages from Willbanks Apiary this year and they both sucked!
One queen *was* terrible. That hive just wasn't booming at all. I took her out of that hive and threw her in a queenless NUC. For reasons I don't understand at all, she turned a complete 180 and I had to remove 1-2 frames of brood to prevent them from swarming. I've never seen that... or even heard of it before.
The other queen.... who knows. The bees threw her out instantly and ended up with laying workers. I actually managed to fix it by putting 2 crappy super frames with brood and an improvised "graft" frame. (just JZBZ cells pushed into the slot in the top for the foundation). I took the original box to the middle of the field and shook it. The older bees returned and believe it or not, my stupid plan actually worked. They cleared up the laying worker, raised a new queen, and that hive is now in good shape to winter.
Not only me it seems. A guy who bought a package at the same time lost the queen a couple of months later for no apparent reason.
Weird stuff. Packages sucked from Wilbanks this year!
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’m a new beekeeper this year and learning a lot from this package vs nuc series. I decided to try both a package and a nuc and got one from one local provider know by our local beekeeping group and the other from another local provider. Genetics is so important, but so is timing. I’m in DC and my package was delivered as scheduled with a local queen at the end of May. That hive is hopping, and I might have had a medium super of honey to harvest my first year if I hadn’t under ordered frames and hive bodies. I just didn’t have the stuff to add to the hive at peak nectar flow. Also the bees in the hive are super gentle. I’ve had to pinch a worker through carelessness to get stung. My package on the other hand was late. I ordered late so no one local could get me a nuc before early June, but as it was it was mid June. The nuc was 5 frame but light on bees, brood, eggs and larva. My mentor got a nuc from them at the same time and mentioned later his had a lot more of everything. Quality control can obviously be an issue too. The hive has caught on, but I’ll have to feed heavily this winter because they just weren’t full of foragers before nectar began to dwindle. The bees are also a lot more defensive.
I found most of our local suppliers have packages available before nucs, so the package has some running room so starting at the same time might not be a fair comparison. I also bought a couple frames of comb with my package which considering how much it costs to build comb is probably essential. My package supplier also sold me the comb. He is an organic beekeeper and known by a number of local beekeepers so I figured his comb would only have the same problems as his bees.
It looks like your problem packages just had weak queens, poorly mated or not as great genetics. I can’t remember if you got your packages and nucs from the same source, but even a supplier with generally good queens could have a few that don’t really connect with enough or the right drones, if they are not mechanically inseminated you can’t know the drone genetics for sure.

Hey Kamon. Don't waste time with those plastic queen release cages. Make one out of #8 hardware cloth, 6 inches square, 3/4" sides. Press those 3/4" sides in all the way to the foundation so the bees can't burrow under to get in to kill her. With the the screen you can easily see in to see what she's doing etc. and they last forever if you're careful with them. I also wrap a couple of big rubber bands all the way around the frame and screen cage to make sure it stays tightly against the comb. As a beekeeper you must have a roll of #8 screen around there, it'll take you 3 minutes to cut out a chunk and bend it into a cage and it costs literally pennies.

elephantcup you’re absolutely right that is the best way to release a Queen. When she is caged she is no longer laying the hive will do a Supersedure cell. Best practice is to use a push in cell over just hatching brood they will accept her as they know no other queen.

I used to think essential oils were good for the colony, then I thought a little more about it. If I'm using them prophylactically, as a preventative to kill harmful bacteria, I'm also killing the good bacteria and actually weakening the colony. It's the good bacteria that keeps the bad bacteria in check.

I like the new veil. I have one like it and it does great. You put the little stakes in the opposite side. That way they go into the comb and hold the cage in place. As you have it now they will stick in the adjacent frame. It may cause the adjacent frame to stick and when you pull one of those two frames out it may release the queen.
