My favourite book ever. As with Rebecca, I was transported to a very relaxing state while reading this. It’s my bible.

East of Eden is Steinbeck's greatest work. I think other books of his get favored over this because of their length and being more straight to the point. Not that his other books aren't great -- this one is just amazing.

I watched the James Dean East of Eden movie within this last month so I am glad you reviewed this book. I only have the small perspective it gave me. I haven't been sure if I should pick up the book. Now I will! Steinbeck has been a strong impact in my life because I live near the area where he used to write about. I studied Grapes of Wrath in high school and Cannery Row has my heart forever. Going to Monterey Bay and walking Cannery Row in real life was cool even if it has become a tourist place. There are hidden nooks that pay tribute to the people who lived there.

one of my favorites! Not just the characters but the beautiful descriptions of the Valley. I must say I was a Hamilton fan and their story was endearing, also I am almost certain than the narrator for the Hamilton was Steinbeck himself telling his family story. My favorite parts of the book were the conversations between Mr Hamilton and the Chinese servant. Wonderful.

I call this book, the American Wuthering Heights type story without all the Brit stuffiness and funny words. Kate was my FAV character because she was a great business woman and was good with people.
I also enjoyed Steinbeck’s; Grapes of Wrath about about Okies who move to CA for a “Better life” , Of Mice and Men about a big dummy who accidentally smushes his pet mice, and Cannery Row about a bunch of bums in CA.

This has become one of new favorite books! I am new to Steinbeck and was in awe of his mastery while reading this book. It's the first book I ever reviewed, on youtube, goodreads and to people directly because it has so much to offer.

I have seen the movie and never read the book so I didn't realize that wasn't the whole story. This book has been on my TBR for a long time, I think I'll move it up my list.
The only Steinbeck I've read are the three we read in a Lit course (I can't remember if it was High School or college...I was enrolled in both at during my final year in HS). I enjoyed them very much but they are the typical shorter stories you study in those types of classes.

I've read a few Steinbeck novels, but for some reason I never got around to East of Eden. But your glowing review has certainly got my library card itching for a journey. Thanks for the review!

In 1942, Steinbeck married his second wife, Gwyndolyn "Gwyn" Conger. With Gwyn, Steinbeck had two sons, Thomas ("Thom") Myles Steinbeck (1944-2016) and John Steinbeck IV (1946-1991).
In May 1948, Steinbeck returned to California on an emergency trip to be with his friend Ed Ricketts, who had been seriously injured when a train struck his car. Ricketts died hours before Steinbeck arrived. Upon returning home, Steinbeck was confronted by Gwyn, who asked for a divorce, which became final in August. Steinbeck spent the year after Ricketts' death in deep depression and wanted to see his sons but Gwyn would not allow it. Gwyn was the inspiration for 'Cathy'. This was his motivation for writing 'East of Eden'.

I just finished re-reading this wonderful novel. If you liked it I suggest you get 'Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters' by Steinbeck. His publisher gave Steinbeck a big leather bound journal to write in as he was composing the novel. It has all his entries for every working day and illuminates Steinbeck's thinking as he progressed through the novel. He describes the discipline he imposed on himself to get it right and not rush it. He describes the ups and downs, distractions, doubts, etc., that writers have and how he deals with it. It's like an autobiography of the book itself. I hope you will look for it.

I've been wanting to read this book for a long time...as a teenager I checked it out from the library but never got around to reading it. I'm finally getting a copy through PaperbackSwap that should be arriving soon, and your review has made me even more excited to read it! :)

I loved this book when I read it at 14. I need to reread it. I do believe it's his best work. I remember reading it through summer and how entertained I was by it. the Grapes of Wrath isn't close to being as good as East of Eden. We have to usually read it at school. For some reason the teachers never choose East of Eden. I wonder why that is. lol!

I'm currently immersed in the audiobook... I don't know that I have a favorite author but Mr. Steinbeck is definitely in the running. All his works are so different yet so human and real... definitely read Grapes of Wrath. It stays with you.

I read East of Eden about 5 years ago and it is only now that I realise that's quite a while, but it was an instant favourite and possibly my most influential read ever. With books like these I'm always waiting for a special time to reread them, whatever that may be, and as I'm in a bit od a slump right now and cannot seem to get into anything, it might be time to revisit it since I know I'll love it.Also, not being from and Englsih speaking country, we never even mentioned Steinbeck in school and therefore I do not know that many people in real life who have read him and it is so wonderful to hear you and everyone in the comments share the love! :)

I read East of Eden a couple years ago and loved it! Easily in my Top 20 favorite books! I've been meaning to pick up The Grapes of Wrath, but it just hasn't happened yet! The 1955 movie is really good! I wasn't quite sure what to think the first time I saw it but since then I've seen it a few more times (I watch the three James Dean films on (or around) his birthday). I think I like it more the more I watch it! He really is the perfect Cal Trask! Hope you enjoy the film!!

Hi Lesley! I loved your review of this book and your thoughts on the book. I've just started a channel which is a first impressions look at books. I've just uploaded my own thoughts on East of Eden (ua-cam.com/video/OOUW8V0pM1w/v-deo.html). I'd love to know whether you think Cathy is 'evil'? And whether such a thing exists in the book? I'd be stoked if you'd be able to view it. Keep up the great work!!!!

Steinbeck was very familiar with the Bible and interpreted Timshel as "thou mayest". To me, that is the most powerful interpretation, although others think "thou shalt" or "thou must" are the more proper interpretations.
