Lobe Blaster from Fantastic Beasts | How to Drink

- Опубліковано 21 жов 2024
- On this episode of How to Drink, I am gearing up for this week's release of "The Crimes of Grindelwald", so I made a Lobe Blaster from Fantastic Beasts! A big part of this drink is in its presentation, the cocktail will change colors from blue to red in the glass, appropriate for a "magic" cocktail. I like to serve it with a small bottle of the lemon juice on the side, so the guest can drop in the potion and watch the colors change. The secret to this neat trick is in my "blue gin", which is made by steeping dried Butterfly Pea Blossoms in gin. The flowers quickly lend their pigment to the gin without affecting it's flavor. The neat thing about this color is that it's a natural PH indicator, so when we increase the acidity it will shift colors to red. Magic! Or maybe just chemistry. At any rate it's a tasty and easy to drink cocktail your fellow wizards are sure to love.

Giggle water is an actual prohibition era term used by flappers to refer to gin or other clear spirits.
underrated comment, probably due to a single typo.
*gin
No shit

If anyone wants a “blue gin” but doesn’t want to dye a bottle them selves, there is a brand called “Empress 1908” that I think would work well in this cocktail. It uses pea blossoms to naturally dye their gin
Yeah I just learned about it myself, very cool stuff
How To Drink if you’re looking to purchase a bottle, I bought mine on craftspiritexchange.com for about $50 after shipping and taxes
Magellan is also a blue gin, don't know if they use BPBs or not
I could stomach Empress but didn't love it - for the price and effort in sourcing it (at least in the lower Midwest), I'd say going for a Tanqueray or a Bombay and ordering some butterfly pea blossom really is worth the trouble. Empress has a really apparent acetone-ish note to it that feels kind of disagreeable.
I accidentally found this channel and I ain’t gonna lie... This is an amazing channel keep up the good work.
Thanks Ted!
I would just like to say that you and Jacob Kowalski could be related. I can't wait to try a lobeblaster before the premiere.
Nicholette Enos I would’ve been completely appalled to not see someone make note that they do look alike 😂😂😂
@@skylineboy001 Same haha
The first video I saw was for butter beer and I actually thought it was Kowalski the whole time.
RIGHT!
It’s literally just his hair cut take that away and they look nothing alike lol
Dude, WB should be hooking you up for this! This is a great idea, especially given that a large amount of the Potterverse fandom are adults. You've really caught fire with this one.
*Fantastic cocktails and where to drink them*
Love this!
Wow the new bar looks absolutely incredible Greg. I can not believe how fast you were able to build and decorate it, cant wait for more videos!
I can’t believe you made a drink just from your imagination. It’s so beautiful and I bet it tastes even better. Definitely gonna try to make this when I can!
Those pea blossoms got me thinking about other similarly-hued plant-based dyes that change color with pH. I know red cabbage juice does so, and certainly is much cheaper. I may have to test soaking some shredded red cabbage in some cheap swill and see how it works out for color and if it imparts any disagreeable flavor. I’ll post again on the results. I like the budget grocery-store options over the expensive, exotic options when possible. Granted, the emotions attached to the exoticness add a certain magic all their own, but if making these up for a party, no one’s the wiser if you’re a miser. 😜🧙♂️🧙♀️🍹
I can tell you from experience, the cabbage works but you really really gotta filter out the cabbage parts to get rid of the cabbage flavor
This is becoming one of my favorite channels ever. Love the set, the host (totally adorable), everything about it. Just spent a long night being up with the husband, sipping cider in bed while binge watching. I am from the shared BWB episode. I thank him for allowing me to find you sir.
Thank you for watching and enjoying and accusing me of being adorable!
This is great! You should make a drink for each house!
WHERE ARE MY SLYTHERINS AT?? :D
This is a good idea!
@@howtodrink Thanks! Looking forward to more! :)
Ravenclaw, represent! You should use Butterfly Pea Flower Tea for a color changing ravenclaw drink.

The new bar is looking fantastic. This was an unexpected surprise for a Monday, and I'm so glad you did it.
Oh snap, Eau Claire Distillery Gin! That's my fave! Way to represent rural Albertan distilleries!
This is pretty similar to a drink that I made a few years back called "Pretty In Ink". There's an Australian gin called Ink Gin that is already infused with the Butterfly Pea Flower and is god damn delicious. I used that instead of infusing it myself, and subbed out the Amaretto for a mix of Limoncello and Peach Bitters. I also found it easier to float the purple gin on top of the lemon/sugar/peach mixture, so that you could see the two distinct layers and colours, then have the guest stir to combine the two and get the dramatic colour change.
Funnily enough I went for almost the exact same glass as well,
How cute. Seems like muggles need magic too.
Man, the quality of your videos is amazing!!
Keep up the good work Greg love your videos.
Thank you!
I ran into your channel by first watching the butter beer episode. 578 drinks later and I stumble upon this masterpiece. Thank you and keep up the great work!
Ravenclaw for life.
The best part about moving to Florida was being able to finally get Ravenclaw gear at Disney; My $70 Ravenclaw hoodie was worth every penny.

You put a great amount of effort and style in these videos and don’t ever doubt they don’t go unappreciated
your blue gin has such a similar color to the creme de violette i have. i wonder if it uses the pea blossom flowers. (also, go ravenclaw, sometimes i feel like i'm the only one.)
This is fantastic and I'm definitely gonna try this soon as I can get my hands on the blue junk!
It’s in the video description!
Yes my Ravenclaw pal. So very well done!
Greg could probably have played the role of Jacob Kowalski in the movie. who else with me?!😱
Its pretty uncanny.
I think I'll have to try this one myself. Gin, Amaretto, Sugar and Lemon sounds absolutely delish
Just made it, it's really good, basically a Tom Collins with an Amaretto twist.
I'm a big wizarding world fan so these are fun to see. And the history in your other videos is great to.
An interesting drink.... it needs an egg white.
Alternative to straight lemon juice, I'd have gone with a little Lemoncello and dry ice. Dry Ice makes things more acidic as the drink chills and the carbon dioxide dissolves into the drink. It might not be as permanent as straight lemon juice though and you can get a rebound effect where it goes from that violet back to the blue color as the drink warms back up, but shaking dry ice with an egg white causes them to violently foam, and is kinda fun.
With that said, there are alternatives to pea blossom.
Both Cabbage and Beet juice are acid pH sensitive.
Bean water (as in the water you get from soaking a pot of beans over night) is also pH sensitive, but they react to alkaline conditions and changes from clear to yellow.
There are some mushrooms that might change colors depending on pH but raw mushroom isn't always good drinking.
So... pea blossoms are probably ideal in terms of flavor and possible in the range of pH being used.
All of this is good ideas and wonderful tips, thank you!
Making this drink with this 40s-50s Era background music? Perfection.
I really liked the film, the intro was one of the best parts of it.
I’m glad you liked my comment, just watched a couple of your other how to drink videos; I particularly like the Butterbeer and Pan Galactic Gargleblaster video.
Goosebumps intro! Awesome episode and a very interesting idea to use that flower to dye liquor.
You should make a recipe book
I'd buy the hell out of that. You are amazing!
It's so sad how excited you got for both Crimes of Grindelwald and Fallout 76, making great cocktails for both.
Only to get mediocre at best, schlock at worst out of both.
Life disappoints, hence: alcohol.
@@howtodrink "The cause of, and solution, to all of life's problems!"
@@howtodrink That's a t-shirt idea right there.
Remember: Reality is an illusion brought on due to a lack of alcohol.
Love it! Definitely going to make it before we go to see the movie!
One extra bit of flair I'm going to try - I'll flame the orange peel for that extra little feeling of magic
This guy should be the official drink maker for all things Harry Potter seriously awesome job
Oh, PLEASEplease more wizarding world drinks! I get all the happy feelings from videos like this, will make the Lobe Blaster for going to the cinema, a cheeky drink from a flask seems very appropriate for 1920s Paris... 🥂
Actual giggle water would be awesome
Indeed!
Karlo Rajnović it’s called Nos😂 just drink some water after
There are some beers that are infused with Helium that cause your voice to change resulting in everyone laughing... not actual giggle water which makes you giggle, but i think you could use this as an idea to create a drink that causes everyone to laugh in high pitches like giggles.
@@PegasusRemi oh yeah! I remember watching that video with two guys trying helium beer. It was hilarious 😂
MY HEART IS SOOOOOO HAPPY RIGHT NOW! I am Slytherin btw... so nice to see a house flag in the video. you have made my entire day with this Greg! ugh....
10 points to How to Drink for tremendous witchcraft!
The production quality of your video's is great!. I especially like the close ups when you spritz t he citrus.
i love that "how to make cheap Empress 1908 Gin" is included in this video
I literally aspire to have my home bar look as worldly as yours is, like it's got all the knick knacks and bobbles and trinkets that make your bar so interesting
This is awesome!!!! A nice little science demo, too! You can impress folks with a colorful pH change ;)
ughh...i love this! And the Ravenclaw banner is awesome (my house!)....and the glasses on the deer are adorbs!
Great new set Greg! Keep up the good work. Your videos are amazing!!
Thank you, love this content! Just tried it and I thought an absinthe spray on the glass really made it next level
btw I used 1 oz Empress gin since it already has butterfly pea and 1 oz Citadelle to get some stronger london dry gin flavors
😍💕 I love the new different set up behind you 🥂
haha the glasses on the deer, love them, and omg it's Harry Potter's patronus as well nice
Looks great. Good mix of flavours. One of my favourite gins is an Australian one called Ink which has a similar effect. Purple colour from some flowers which changes to pink with acidity. Goes a not so pleasant blue over time if exposed to too much light. Good fun and delicious. Had never thought of keeping the citrus on the side like that. Quite the effect.
Dude, that was AWESOME!! I love when ppl recreate stuff from fiction. Looks tasty as hell! Thx Gregg, keep em comin!
To a fellow Ravenclaw, Cheers! Top marks to ya!! You are doing excellent work. 😀🤘
Damn, that intro alone is pure gold! :D And also great presentation throughout the episode. I love it
Thank you!
H2D + HP = yes please, I'll take 10.
Well that's good, because I've got another one coming
I SO hope there’s tons of Wizarding World drinks in FB2-CoG! Not only would that be awesome to see on the big screen, but because then we could (hopefully) look forward to Greg (re)creating them all! Heading to see the movie in 10 hours, for the Fantastic Beasts Fan Event! Cheers!
There’s already a well established list of Wizarding World drinks for me to explore. More would be great!
Champagne topping would definitely have made it more of a Lobe Blaster; either way, great video!
Love this! An Australian distillery (Husk Distillers) makes Ink Gin which is infused with butterfly pea flowers - it's amazingly floral and particularly delicious with Elderflower Fever Tree tonic. Would be well worth a look into - Ink Gin is one of my favourites purely for the taste (but of course the tonic turns it pink as well!)
I just made some blue gin by using the pea blossoms and brewed up this cocktail. The color change was fantastic and the drink itself is tasty. Time to make up another!
Awesome! So glad you liked it!
This is awesome! More fun chemistry drinks!
I'd love to see a series on the components of cocktails and how you can use them. For example Sherry. What's it taste like? What's it blend well with and what to avoid? Oh when is an egg foam appropriate?
I started that with Spirit Guide, we explored Triple Sec, I intend to follow that up with a lot more, but my life exploded and my wife and I had to move in a hurry, just getting back on my feet now
Bruh your production quality 👌👌👌
I love watching you make drinks!! And your movie knowledge is out of sight. Makes me want to watch more movies (i need suggestions anyway - Canadian winter means playing hockey 3 times a week and watching movies).
Thank you so much! I‘ll try this one as soon as I get my hands on those Butterfly Pea Blossoms!
PS: LOVE your content, keep it going (:
Intros are spot on. well done sir
Someone needs to cast Greg as a bartender in a movie.
hello cute lumberjack wizard man, you sir just earned yourself a new follower.
Awesome new set my man, so excited to set my new bar up too!
Built this in my garage last week!
I live a 10 minute walk from Eau Claire Distillery. I love their Parlour Gin. Wow.
Man, every video from this guy he makes the cocktail and then takes a sip and you see if face light up like an amnesiac alcoholic taking his first sip of whiskey.
Great new set!
Thank you!
There's a brand of blue gin in Australia called Ink and the colour is pretty spectacular
I’d love to see your take on the Pan Galactic Gargel Blaster. From Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy. Just found your channel yesterday, and really enjoy it.
As a guy who watches football and drinks beer, I almost hate to admit how excited I was to come across a dude making cocktails for Harry Potter movies. I say “almost” because you mentioned Christopher Walken, and I’ve had the same thought. So now we are couch sitting co-directors which basically makes us family.
If you can find Empress 1908 (from British Columbia Canada) gin it already comes with the flower colouring. Great drink btw.
I don’t think I’ve ever clicked so fast on a video
You spoil me!
Love the channel, you're super fun to watch! Quick CORRECTION, you mention 0.75 oz of lemon juice, it does not equal 45ml, it would be ~21ml (for american liquid oz)? Keep up the great work!
I've never wanted to establish a nerd-themed craft cocktail bar more.
Check out The Lockhart in Toronto!
0:33 OMG This awesome guy and Dan Fogler are doppelgangers or what !
This is gorgeous!
Greg, great looking drink!
Very fun! I'm going to give it a shot.
Every time you make a video that I find cool, I have to go buy more stuff...
Potential sponsors: take note!
New set looks amazing.
What are the assorted additives on your tray ? Or do they vary a great deal ? How about a an episode taking us on a tour of your set up as it stands today?
You're a Ravenclaw? I shouldn't be surprised. Happy to have you in my house good sir!
Who is under the table at 5:48??
What the actual fuck
AHHHH WTF
Haha I think it's a rag in the pocket of his apron. You can also see it around 5:38. But it totally looked like fingers the first time I saw it!
love all your harry potter drinks! But this one is particularly amazing!
This video and recipe is better than the entirety of The Crimes of Grindelwald
Happen to have a bottle of emperess 1908 and disorano amaretto from other cooking recipes i had and i made this drink as soon as i realized what the ingredients to this were, it came out amazing, a little sweet for me but i still love it
(edited for typo)
The giggle water is one of the best parts in the movie😂😂
New set looks killer, guy! Ya'll put in work!!!
Thank you! You may notice some cuts/splinters in my hands this season... I was still finishing the build the morning we shot!
@@howtodrink oh yeah. I watched some of the livestream.
Still my favorite UA-cam channel
Thank you!
Cant wait to try your cocktail, and see the movie
The new place looks great!
Hi Greg, love your channel. Going to give this a try!
How many Pea Blossom flowers should I use if I wanted to dye my own gin? Thinking of dying 500ml.
Thank you
This was incredibly awesome
Eau Claire parlour gin is amazing
Cool looking drink, Greg! One question: this goes against the conventional wisdom that drinks containing citrus juice should be shaken. Is there a reason you chose to go against the grain here?
Love butterfly pea flower.
Makes a wonderful woody flavor that pairs with gin wonderfully.
I need to try it with bourbon or rye one of these days. Or maybe something smoky?
This is great!
Can you also make Haitian Kremas? It's a Haitian Christmas drink with rum, coconut, and milk. Other ingredients too!
Love the Ravenclaw representation.
When you played that first giggle water clip I had an epiphany! You look shockingly similar to Dan Fogler, like a brother or something.
This looks really cool!
A small chunk of dry ice would add some extra "magic" to this drink.
