I'd like to see how the Kikugorō line has revolutionized _onnagata_ acting over time, in both straight dramas and dances!

I would gladly watch four hour versions of this video. I just found it relaxing and entrancing. It’s like TV but from a few hundred years ago. I loved the mix of classical paintings, photographs and video of actual performances, the ongoing background music, and the subtitles and summary the whole time keeping your attention so you don’t feel completely lost.

I have always been curious to know how extensive the list of roles considered important treasures by the Otowaya house is and my favorite role is that of Benten Kozō, protagonist of Shiranami Gonin Otoko. Speaking of Benten Kozō, last week someone had asked about permission to play certain roles.
My question is this: we know that Ichikawa Danjūrō XIII is a well-established famous Kabuki actor and that younger actors often have to ask him for permission to play certain roles, like Soga no Gorō in Sukeroku. But if I remember correctly, even though he is one of the top Kabuki actors today, there are roles that even today Danjūrō XIII is not allowed to play. What roles in Kabuki would Danjūrō XIII have to ask Shochiku or other important Kabuki actors (such as Kataoka Nizaemon XV and Onoe Kikugorō V) to play?

It is difficult to know. At this point, he might prefer not to play certain roles, rather than having to ask for permission. To be honest, I suspect this might be the reason he created a new dance in which he plays Gorozō, rather than learning the classic version of the role from Nizaemon XV or Kikugorō VII. That said, I'm sure any play he wants to perform has to be green lighted and scheduled by Shochiku.

@@KabukiInDepth Wait, if what you said is true, couldn't that make Danjūrō XIII more isolated than he already is in the Kabuki world? Because his attitude (of not learning ancient Kabuki traditions) could create a great dislike for him, wouldn't it?

I think the harm has already been done, but the parties seem to have moved on, with Danjūrō XIII and Kikunosuke V performing together at the Dankikusai two years in a row now, so I don't think there's much to worry about.

@@KabukiInDepthSpeaking of Kikunosuke V, I have a very serious question to ask you in relation to Nakamura Kichiemon II, Kikunosuke V's father-in-law: can you tell which actor is most likely to inherit the name Nakamura Kichiemon and become Nakamura Kichiemon III in the future? Nakamura Karoku V (current head of the Harimaya house), Nakamura Yonekichi V (son of Karoku V and heir of the Harimaya house), or Nakamura Kashō IV (son of Nakamura Matagorō III and nephew of Karoku V)?

There is a chance that the Kōraiya or Otowaya might want to keep the name, as the only blood relatives of Kichiemon. If the name remains in the Harimaya, Karoku V would be a good candidate, particularly after becoming Living National Treasure, but he is more of a supporting actor. For a long time, I've thought that Kashō IV would be a good candidate, if he continues to grow as an actor. But it is all speculation. It is also possible that the name might remain vacant for a long time.

I'm curious if the Tomijuro line of actors inherited any of the Kata established by Uzaemon XV, considering Tomijuro V was a grandson of Uzaemon.

No, as far as I know. Some of his kata (including those for Naozamurai, Gorozō and Benten Kozō) were continued by Ichikawa Danjūrō XI, who learned much from Uzaemon XV, although he usually combined the kata of Uzaemon and Kikugorō VI. Uzaemon's kata for Kagetoki Kajiwara was also preserved by Danjūrō XI and others, and Uzaemon XVII, decades later, tried to revive a few more, such as XV's kata for Sasaki Moritsuna in Moritsuna Jinya, crimson kamishimo and all.
