Bruh is an icon period. I'm genuinely surprised after all these years that more people haven't discovered his well-crafted and thought out content. He has been and will continue to be one of my channels on this platform because of how genuine a content creator/ person he is.
He's extremely observant and then excellent at communicating those observations. This makes for great content that is entertaining and informative, which makes you step back and observe and think as well. 12/10 every damn time.
This is a great video. I'm fascinated by the way we form opinions about things that we haven't actually seen or read or listened to; The Big Bang Theory would be a good example of that for me. (One that hits closer to home for me: I feel like a lot of people who haven't actually read The Fault in Our Stars have an opinion on The Fault in Our Stars.) I think you're absolutely right that the focus of creative work has to be on finding fulfillment within the work itself. I really, really enjoyed this video. Gave me a lot to think about. Thanks. -John
In case you needed another opinion on TFIOS: if you’d titled each chapter with a lyric from Smash Mouth’s All Star people would’ve focused more on the creative work 🤷🏻♀️
"people who haven't actually read The Fault in Our Stars have an opinion on The Fault in Our Stars" it upsets me to the ends of the earth and back again how true this is :( TFIOS deserves so much better
@vlogbrothers Hi John! I remember your interview on 99% Invisible, where you talked about some of the crazy reviews you've seen for your books. How do you differentiate between constructive criticism and unproductive criticism? I often catch myself putting too much weight behind hurtful comments, thinking I'm being more receptive when in reality I'm validating opinions that don't deserve it.
opinions are like cooking. i hated broccoli. absolutely disgusting. but then my friend taught me a different way of cooking broccoli. now it's my favorite vegetable. you gotta cook your opinions differently to like them. i don't remember where i was going with this.
@@gero3015 I think the reason for that is twofold. First of all it could be that many westerners just haven't learned how to cook it properly (like the person above was saying), but beyond that we're also primed during childhood to think it's disgusting because others around us say it is.
I wish we could start teaching that the internet is designed to have the most controversial and extreme opinions get the most attention. It needs to be universally understood so that we don't raise generations of kids who think that you either have to absolutely love something to death, or despise it and burn it to the ground. Thanks for the great stuff as always nathan
I feel like this is mainly how it feels to have a conversation on advertiser driven social networks like twitter where if you cross a certain number of likes and retweets, your tweet will break into the trending tab and entire articles will be written, generating a press cycle around a single tweet. Thats an insane amount of attention you can draw to yourself in a way that a nuanced, well argued paragraph on an obscure forum site will never get.
This video actually made me realize just how much I care about other people's opinions and how much I really shouldn't. Honestly, thank you for this video bro. I feel like a different person.

I've been recently trying to stop myself from immediately reading youtube comments of a video before I've watched it bec I could feel myself just watching the video solely from the point of view of that comment I read before the video loads. I could feel my brain getting exhausted from carrying all the different opinions from everywhere and having none of mine at all. Also Nathan you are so cute thankyou
neethy Yeah i find myself doing that too! Even when the video is like half a minute. Maybe I'm scared to potentially have the "wrong opinion" or something
I stop reading comments of things i really like, because i get sick of the constant negativity and need to critiqtue everything. sometimes, i just to like it for what it is.
Eleesia's Portraits Yeah, and for me personally, sometimes reading comments on things I like gives me this weird mix of numbness and also a bit of superiority complex. My two favorite bands are Radiohead and Imagine Dragons. One band is considered one of the greatest of all time, and the other is treated like they are terrorists or something. This mix used to make me feel superior like "wow I'm so open to things I love stuff from both sides of the music world" until one day i realized that it doesn't mean shit. It doesn't matter at all. I like what I like and that's that, no matter what others love/hate
I'm gonna try and do the same. I usually read the comments just to get a feel for the video but it also kinda ruins the experience and exposes you to all the opinions like you said.
I've definitely noticed how fast people switch on an artist once they become popular/mainstream. It's weird to me that people feel they can only enjoy an artist while they're still "underrated."
For me it loses the "closeness" to the artist. Like, I was vibing with y'all when you had 20 fans & it was a 'genuine" thing. Now it's feels like you've sold out to the man. But I'm admittedly very shallow & I'm definitely not like other girls
@@PixieBelleStay At least you’re self aware. Just saying though that there are many popular artists that didn’t sell out and are popular because many people can see the genuinity in their music and/or personality.
Yeah! I always wondered that. Shouldn't the "original" fans be happy to see their fav grow? It sounds like some fans feel entitled or want to "own" the artist and have their music all to themselves.
@@Homeboy_Brando you're absolutely right but I'm also selfish. If everyone likes them then I'm not really as into them anymore. Kinda like that song Panini. I'm completely aware that it's a ridiculous mindset but I can't help it
I prefer to tell people that something "isn't for me". Just because I don't like something, doesn't mean other people can't like it. There are literally billions of people in the world. If they all liked the same stuff, then life would be hella boring. Great topic! I think you frequently do a good job expressing things people are feeling but they might not be good at articulating.
I feel like the love-hate cycle has more to do with people wanting to distinguish their "Self" from other people. If everyone loves/hates something, there's always those who have to publicly state they think differently just to stand out. Then the opposite opinion becomes the new "cool" opinion until too many people share the same sentiment and people feel the urge to stand out again.
changing your opinion should be considered normal and healthy, not like you’re giving something up or losing somehow. It’s a very strange kind of pride that makes us cling to the convictions of younger, dumber versions of us. it’s okay, you’re allowed to grow.

@@yonathank132 Yess Amen thank you for spreading the gospel and taking your time to spread it in the comments I didn’t read the whole thing but it’s a very powerful message💕
This is so accurate. Even the fact that I go straight to the comment section before finishing a video these days is an example of this. Great perspective.
this topic is the main reason why i deleted my twitter account! i noticed that every time i would see those viral tweets that get so many likes and retweets that disagree with something that i genuinely enjoy or liked, i'd say to myself, "oh wait..maybe that *thing* is actually trash" and i got tired of always wanting to jump on the bandwagon and following what other people say about certain things. i became exhausted. i feel so much better now that i deleted my twitter. it's so important to have a sense of identity, being content with what you like, and staying grounded in what you value in life and what your beliefs are. remember to take a break from social media every once in a while. it really do be messing with your head lol
i feel the same way. i sometimes consider deleting twitter for this exact reason - it’s exhausting to constantly try to be aware of what’s considered “good” and “bad.” at some point you understand how much better you feel when you’re secure in your thoughts.
Every time there’s a massive Twitter controversy about something, I try to write some kind of blog post to express and formulate my thoughts about the issue - but without fail, by the time I’m actually confident in what I’ve written, the Twitterverse has moved past the entire conversation and it’s not even worthy to post.
Post it anyway, there's not enough people who do but those who do are usually the game changers. My current self was formulated through reading lengthy opinions of others and weighing up what they was saying. Now I believe that opinions are not important, that there's too many to come to a conclusive conclusion of right and wrong outside of "as long as it's not hurting anybody". I feel it could benefit other people to think this way too. Especially those who get furious at simple tweets
Its literally just some fruit on another piece of food why does everyone get so upset over it i just find it so childish at this point. I can easily find you far more worse foods in the world
Like it’s been around for DECADES! And if you don’t like it, you don’t have to eat it! Why the sudden hate now? It’s just arbitrary, misdirected, immature behavior.
I always think of this quote from Angela Carter - "Reading a book is like re-writing it for yourself. You bring to a novel, anything you read, all your experience of the world. You bring your history and you read it in your own terms." You're always growing and changing all the time, it's no wonder your opinions change all the time too
I definitely agree with most things you’re saying, however, I think the gray area between “not caring about other people’s opinion” and straight up disregarding valid criticism, maybe even pure apathy for the lived experience of others, can sometimes be a bit blurry. It’s frustrating and this dichotomy (which I very much tend to because I have BPD) can sometimes make it hard to even know what your own opinion really is. Also, I find that sometimes I don’t have the cultural, political or social context to pick up on certain clues that I later see expressed by others and I naturally feel inclined to be empathetic towards those experiences, for example certain representation in media that I have not practiced viewing critically. Once someone points it out, I don’t really want to hold on to my personal liking of it because the damage it has potentially inflicted supersedes my positive experience with it.
I feel like people on the internet confuse "good taste" for being a better person and "bad taste" for being a worse person. I also hate it when people call you a normie or consoomer or some other dumb internet word for liking something popular.
Agree! And the funny thing is there's no such thing as "good taste" because art is entirely subjective. What they really mean is, you like the art i like, therefore you have good taste. Which is absurd and a slightly conceited notion. Popular things are popular for a reason! You aren't special because you only consume "underground" art.
People who think "a lot of people like this" = bad are forever strange to me. Especially those who don't give the thing an actual chance. This seems to be super common when the thing is popular with teenage girls because we love to hate on them. I was like 12 during both the Twilight & Justin Bieber crazes, and 16 when John Green's books got super popular, and it amazed me how many people hated things they'd never read/ listened to.
Honestly a negative tweet bashing something could have 200,000 likes and still have very little effect on the actual popularity of the thing there bashing. I think people just gravitate towards the negativity when it comes to Twitter
Nathan, this a masterpiece. I just discovered your videos and I’m refreshed by the way you articulate your philosophical stances. Everybody in America needs to watch this video. If the general public didn’t hold their opinion up so high as something that needs to be shared or known, we would all enjoy life much more
Used to hate on other girls for the way they dressed but my aunt yelled at me. Then I realized I was following my grandma's opinions instead of my own. Now I make sure to hype them up.
i think about this all the time, i kinda feel like a fraud bc i notice myself getting easily influenced by other people's opinions. u put it into words so eloquently great video king
On top of everything, it’s so obvious when someone’s personality is based off of social media. I also notice that being cold, egotistical and “having no emotions” is a personality type that seems to do well on twitter, because I guess people think it’s funny in a way (I personally don’t find it funny but to each their own) but in real life, I really do not think anyone would want to be around someone like that.
Exactly. I also notice that people who always have "hot takes" on everything and are very opinionated on everything turn out to be really judgmental and if someone criticizes them they get really defensive. That personality type may get attention, but at what cost? To feel better about their sense of self? To feel important? People who act like that are not doing any favors for themselves and others. I swear being around someone like that is exhausting.
@@CheneNri omg that perfectly describes someone I used to follow on Twitter. I unfollowed and muted them because it just became overbearing. A lot of people found their personality interesting, but like you said, it just came across as super judgmental and in my opinion cold. Had to part my ways with that one quickly
I've decided to stay off social media as much as possible because of people just being so cold and mean to others they've never met in their life, but they see one facet of that person and decide to hate them. There's always like four different angles to any story and people cling to one angle and dismiss anything else. I can feel myself becoming more bitter and angry about these people and I know I gotta back off or I'll be sucked in to the void.
This is absolute TRUTH. I’ve almost fallen for this and I hated how it was making me feel/change and I had to ditch social media for a long while. To this day, I can’t really get too into social media. The only time I’ve enjoyed it was as an observer and wasn’t worried about if people liked my posts. I gained a pretty large following, despite this it was no longer fun at all. It was all a facade, I felt empty inside. And only when I took a year long break did I feel centered and like myself again. Social media addiction is no joke, especially when you feel yourself changing (often for the worse). I don’t use it as heavily anymore except for UA-cam and I think I’m much happier overall.
I think a lot of the time we get so caught up with social media we really start to believe it’s a reflection of the real world or real life. Twitter is just an extremely loud and obnoxious minority that don’t generally mean much to the outside world. It is a vacuum of the people that consistently use social media, are in that part or have the same interests. It is geared and created to fit you entirely. This isn’t to say it doesn’t have an impact because it does but to remember that it isn’t the be all and end all of every opinion, thought and discussion.
kpop!! i had the dumbest, most judgmental stereotypes about kpop accepted in my head as fact before a friend made me watch a bts music video and my life was lowkey changed by their art completely. i cant believe how closed-minded i was about any non-western art before, but now i realize (duh) that kpop & all non-western music has the same bad apples, problematic industry standards, and potentially beautiful and life-changing content as western music. duh. i just wish more people could at least see that their opinions are influenced by others and not fact when it comes to non-english music, even if they dont like it...
Like when everyone was just being awful and saying how disgusted they were at the parents of that bigger baby that went viral. Even in spaces, I am within real-life their twitter versions are just the worst because of how hateful they can get.
Yesterday I watched Spider-Man: homecoming, I used to hate it without even watching it, for many reasons, I've just found out that one of them was because my classmates from high school loved it, and they were toxic and disgusting people for me so I didn't want to like things that dumb people liked... Now, 3 years later after graduating, I watched it and damn, it is amazing!! It is interesting how your opinion can be affected by the atmosphere you're surrounded with
I think about this topic a lot, especially where things that teenage girls like are concerned. The Beatles / Twilight / K-pop were all initially beloved by teenage girls and taken less seriously as a result before the demographic shifted and it slowly became less popular to hate on them. The Beatles are one of the more interesting examples of this phenomena. The complete 180 from "their music isn't real/serious, they're just a bunch of pretty boys that make teenage girls excited with their generic sound" to "the beatles were artists and if you think otherwise, you're uncultured" happened over decades, whereas now it happens so much quicker. It's fascinating how having instant access to so much information and communities across the world has changed things. But yeah, don't listen to anyone who says any art is "objectively" good or bad. I would make an exception for hyperbole, but it's the internet, you're going to be misunderstood whether you like it or not.
Yeah it's definitely rooted in misogyny. It sucks because people are missing out on so much good music, films, art in general because the majority of the consumers are teenage girls or young women.
a strong opinion that changed for me was my view on anime. I swore it off in high school cause a lot of cringey people i knew liked it and cause of the fan service but in quarantine, i gave it a chance and I gotta say, i still hate rampant sexism but i appreciate the artform and the storytelling and animation that goes into it. I basically learned that I can like something and have a critical opinion on it and still enjoy it.
There are great anime titles without the problematic elements!! I think Girls Last Tour is one. Violet evergaarden is BEAUTIFUL (I'm still sad abt the kyoani incident) but rly u just gotta look for them!! I think anime is changing over these years and with the new webtoon adaptations I'm actually getting back into anime after being a closet weeb for years (I thought being an anime fan is cringey as well)
@@justrandomotaku ye I feel that. But also mostly I'm learning that I can enjoy anime while also being critical of some things they have. It's like recognizing that I can form my own opinion and engage with shit on my own terms rather than follow black and white opinions of general internet
Literally me. I swore off it because I thought it looked dumb and also the seemingly common trope of the over the top, subjugating fan service at the expense of their female characters to favor their male audience. I like the imagery and I’m not saying it should be eradicated but it’s a like a necessary requirement or something. Ik it’s not all anime so that’s good at least. So I’m also not a fan of the sometimes blatant sexism but then I started watching anime and I’m literally addicted to the Entire genre. Hunter X Hunter, my hero academia, a silent voice, violet evergarden, the original naruto series and the shippuden, Saiki K, is avatar the last air bender considered anime because I’ve watched the entire thing 5 different times, carol and Tuesday, I don’t give a damn about volleyball but was on the edge of my seat throughout the entirety of haikyu... why didn’t someone tell me anime was freaking amazing. 😫 it’s like discovering a whole new beautiful and awesome way to tell stories and I’m having so much freaking fun binging it all.
Ooooh I forgot studio ghibli!😁 their catalogue is beautiful. Howls moving castle and spirited away were some of the most beautifully whimsical pieces of art I saw this year. Anime is actually surprisingly really awesome😅
@@leilanidru7506 omgggg literally exactly my thoughts dude!!!!! It was nice to learn that the genre was vast and big and that yes there is rampant sexism and sometimes xenophobia but that I could appreciate the art and beauty of it while also calling out and critiquing the things that need to be pointed out! Haikyuu literally taught me why sports fans go crazy over a sport, FMAB is a masterpiece that deals with the topic of oppressive regimes. Heres to us finding anime that we like and pointing out the shit that obviously needs to be chucked, I wish u luck on your anime journey! :D
Back when I used reddit whenever I joined a sub with like a main shared opinion, I would get sucked into it and the community aspect of it makes it easy to develop tribalism against other groups or communities. Eventually after enough time of leaving one of these I would deradicalize on it. I've honestly just stopped using reddit at this point cause I hate how easily it can manipulate you with group thinking.
Confession: I hated the "It Was Good Until It Wasn't.." Album by Kehlani when it first came out. Then I got my heart broken, listened again, and it is now one of my favorite r&b albums.
I go on twitter maybe once every 4 days, solely to get updates on my favorite artists/actors next projects. After I get my information I instantly delete the app. People are so quick to judge and clown you, I really don’t need to sacrifice my confidence and sanity for some memes.
MY GUY!!!!!! the way that i've been thinking about this ever since last year!!! Ever since I started watching GOT later than everyone else and had to force myself to make my own opinions that weren't tainted by other people. great shit
I used to have really strong opinions on literally everything, but as I got older I've just kinda let things fall away that don't matter. I will argue if someone says something racist or sexist, but you don't like apples? okay bro live your life
ik like ITS OK NOT TO HAVE AN OPINION. sometimes ppl ask me about a political issue n im like “well its very complicated and both sides are entrenched in a lot of religious and political history so i dont have an opinion” and people actually get upset about that. like do you know how much easier it would be to TRULY learn about things if the only people who shouted their opinions were the ones who knew a lot/were passionate about the topic? instead its ppl shouting to align themselves one way or another to avoid being criticized, without ever realizing thats what theyre doing.
I high-key rewatch my own videos and laugh at the stuff I did/do in them. I definitely understand hitting that point of "I like this, and if y'all do too, then cool!" I also find that I grant a lot of grace to movies specifically because a good story is universal and budget isn't what will make it good. Telling a good story, making people feel something at any level is hard. Thanks for this!
7:00 was really interesting, I do a lot of creative writing and a few years back I got myself into such a habit of writing for an audience that it held me back from becoming better. I only grew out of that recently... it already feels so much nicer!
This is so facts bro, like I feel like I be checking comments on everything from tiktoks , movies and youtube videos to see how I should react to content. But I think it's so important to form your own review then compare it to others.
I think the main beef with The Weeknd was that biphobic shit from before. People (including me) just don’t let that shit go the way others expect them to, and then there’s a “Weeknd is trash” hate train where-clingers on who don’t know the original context are happy to rip something apart just because they can. And of course there are people who are contrarian for attention. We all know of at least one person like that.
this is such a good/nuanced video, more people need to have this idea that it's lame as hell to be a contrarian. if I wanna listen to a Drake song let me be I'm not always in the mood to listen to fuckin jpegmafia (who I love don't come at me for this)
I think I always secretly loved it but everyone assumed if you were a fan you were a dumb hormonal teenage with nary a brain cell. I was definitely at the peak of my "I'm not like other girls" stage.

I randomly got this in my recommendation and I am glad it did. Because this is genuinely great. I pretty much agree with you said here. People on Internet and especially on Twitter tends to see everything in two extreme directions, there is no room for nuance or change over the time, which is terrible in my opinion.
My boyfriend and I watched Nacho Libre last night (because I thought it would be a nice comfort movie for pre-election night). It was his first time seeing it. He said he didn't like it. I'm devastated.
i used to be one of those wannabe "not like other girls" girl in middle school and forced myself to hate justin bieber and one direction and now here i am 18 and realizing all that i missed out on like what a feeling by 1D ??????????? the greatest.. and now i scream "baby" unironically
same omg I feel like I missed out on so much growing up because I felt like I had to label myself and be “different” when being me is and has always been enough. Choosing to like whatever you like is so freeing
Same but even after giving them a fair shake I know dislike Justin Bieber for other reasons, not because he's popular. And I was never into One Direction but I understand why people liked them. Twilight was in the same vain, and if you check real close, these mostly consist in fans of mostly girls and it's usually cool to hate girl stuff :/
this video.....this VIDEO.... is the STRONGEST TEA to ever POUR itself from the youtube interface into people's brains. it really shows the depth of introspection you've done, and even if it's hard, what you're talking about is something we should all totally aspire to do. Head up king, if you keep thinking like this, and making content you really love, like, life is limitless. Your stuff is SO underrated, but then again, the longer it takes to get to the top, the longer you're gonna be staying at the top, especially with a golden mindset like this!!!
this is the whole reason why i've kinda started to watch/listen to things after the initial attention around it dies down...consuming media while hearing everyone's opinions on social media is overwhelming
Love this. Definitely weird how people aren’t really thinking for themselves, but I do find myself having preconceived thoughts before giving things a chance just from social media.
That movie analogy is the same way I feel about Joker. It got amazing reviews, and all my friends said it was so great, but I watched it and I didn't get the hype. It was a fine movie, but not what the reviews made me think it was going to be. Great video, very thought-provoking.
ngl when ariana's new album dropped a couple days ago i wasn't sure how to feel about certain songs and went to look at what ppl were saying about those songs on twitter first THEN tweeted p much the same thing LMFAOOOO i need to stop but ive realized before i do this with a lot of rlly small things in the past
I’ve noticed I’ve liked more things, and also accepted that some things weren’t for me, as I grow older. It’s nice thinking that there is no real good or bad in a vacuum, and that pieces of art just are
I have been going through a rough time recently, caring way too much about other people’s opinions and seeking personal validation and I just wanted to say this video really helped me. I love your channel and content so much!
I was also one of the people who hated on pop music until I realized that was dumb and pop music is fun lol. but yeah I've been a fan of taylor swift since I was 13 so watching the public opinion on her flip back and forth is a similar experience
its crazy!! now that u say that im very glad to have consistently liked her since speak now, even when people rolled their eyes at me for “going with the crowd” or it was more accepted to praise her publicly-at least i know one thing for sure, which is that i DONT just like her because the general public does lol
Didn't like her during her "squad" days, I thought she was shallow af and her music was pretty uninspiring. Then I came across her documentary and realise how much she's grown and matured since then and I like her songs now!! Ppl on the internet don't appreciate that people can grow and change over time, for better of for worse..
Gotta give respect to those who can change their minds based on how much they've grown. However I do hope that only applies to popular media and not things like human rights.
while this is true, i still don’t think we should phrase it as “you should be able to take in info and change your mind about stuff EXCEPT in these cases,” because that will actively harm any growth EVEN in those cases by making u associate certain things as unchangeable & certain things as not. what i mean is, every person can have their own unshakeable beliefs, but sometimes we see other people share their unshakable beliefs and go “well, that means i must accept and perpetuate this opinion without learning more about it.” an example i can think of is the israeli-palestine conflict; it is a VERRRYYY complicated and nuanced issue but people online treat it like it is simple, and u must be entirely for one side or you are entirely against it. all that means is sooo many people with “opinions” on it know nothing about the issue at all, and if no one knows anything but they are NOT allowed to question, then how on earth will a conflict get resolved? TL:DR; i might personally agree with u, but im still against trying to establish a generally accepted idea of what opinions are and arent allowed to change
"I know some of y'all wanna like this stuff that you're hating on" Me with Steven Universe, Legend of Korra, and EDM in high school. I was young and just wanted to feel validated by my favorite UA-camr at the time, and didn't realize I'd be happier if I just... Didn't care
@@Yumyum-yo6op No one said it's objectively bad. It's just bad when you compare it to the original Avatar series, which I personally think is fair. It's a sequel to it, it's in the same universe and reuses some of the same characters. It's like playing Dead Space 1, and when 2 and 3 come out, you don't compare it to the previous ones because "it's a different game". Same with movies and TV series.
love this so much man, i agree with basically everything! My opinion on "cringe" has changed a lot over the last 3 years! I used to hate cringy things and would call so many things cringe all the time! But now i see cringe as a good and pure thing, things that people call cringe are usally just kids or people having fun, trying something out or experimenting, and i love that! I love seeing people being interested enough in something to try it out, even tho they might not really know what they are doing! They are just having fun!
I swear I always see the same "I never liked this person" tweet with 200k upvotes when some news comes out to get someone cancelled. People are so hungry to be noticed they will literally just make their personality hating on someone just to be seen. It's legit embarrassing.

Is this overhyping him so he’ll eventually turn into overrated? Nah, you right it’s facts.
Oh the man’s definitely been killing it.

A broccoli post. Delicious. Mmmm ....
LMAO but still that's a pretty solid point!!
I swear only westerners for some reason hate broccoli
Hah. Twitter
The internet: the death of nuance
@@juliasutter6996 wholeheartedly agree
I feel like this is mainly how it feels to have a conversation on advertiser driven social networks like twitter where if you cross a certain number of likes and retweets, your tweet will break into the trending tab and entire articles will be written, generating a press cycle around a single tweet. Thats an insane amount of attention you can draw to yourself in a way that a nuanced, well argued paragraph on an obscure forum site will never get.
Or as I like to put it: the internet enables us to listen to our neighbors screaming fruitlessly at their tv

That's relatable 👍
I'm gonna try and do the same. I usually read the comments just to get a feel for the video but it also kinda ruins the experience and exposes you to all the opinions like you said.
This video is so damn real
Hi Evan
Fancy seeing you here Evan 😏
You were the last youtuber I expected to see here lmao
when I stopped judging the shows, movies, music, etc. that I consumed & just started the fact that I enjoyed them, life became a lot more fun
I've definitely noticed how fast people switch on an artist once they become popular/mainstream. It's weird to me that people feel they can only enjoy an artist while they're still "underrated."
It's giving "I'm not like the other girls"
For me it loses the "closeness" to the artist. Like, I was vibing with y'all when you had 20 fans & it was a 'genuine" thing. Now it's feels like you've sold out to the man. But I'm admittedly very shallow & I'm definitely not like other girls
@@PixieBelleStay
At least you’re self aware.
I like that take! I’m gonna start using that so it’s not like I’m negative. “That thing is not for me in this moment.” 😌
Even if you do say "I don't like this" it doesn't mean you're forcing it on anyone else, it's just expressing your opinion either way. But you do you.
@@Laz3rCat95 yep
100% “isn’t my favorite” is my fav thing to say.
Well said, i think that's a big part of it
That’s literally exactly what Nathan said

this topic is the main reason why i deleted my twitter account! i noticed that every time i would see those viral tweets that get so many likes and retweets that disagree with something that i genuinely enjoy or liked, i'd say to myself, "oh wait..maybe that *thing* is actually trash" and i got tired of always wanting to jump on the bandwagon and following what other people say about certain things. i became exhausted.

Post it anyway, there's not enough people who do but those who do are usually the game changers. My current self was formulated through reading lengthy opinions of others and weighing up what they was saying. what a lovely quote!
Great insight.
One of the most thoughtful comment I've read in a while.
nicest quote I've read in a while!
I really love just listening to what Nathan has to say at this point, like if you made a podcast I'd listen to it all the timeee

@@jojo97773 yes it's called being a contrarian.
Honestly a negative tweet bashing something could have 200,000 likes and still have very little effect on the actual popularity of the thing there bashing. I think people just gravitate towards the negativity when it comes to Twitter
thats why twitter sucks
100%, I've seen so many albums that Twitter has trashed go #1
It’s Twitter. Of course they do.
That's why I take long breaks from Twitter, everytime I post art on my main.
okay but you're actually so right
Nathan, this a masterpiece.
Growth! Love to see it. I was the same way

@@malcolmdjiadeu5082 ayeee I'm so glad someone recognizes it.
i think about this all the time, i kinda feel like a fraud bc i notice myself getting easily influenced by other people's opinions. u put it into words so eloquently great video king
@T they aren't necessarily wrong🤷
I don’t use it as heavily anymore except for UA-cam and I think I’m much happier overall.
nbs this video changed my perspective on how I look at music and just life in general . great vid my guy keep it up!
It's definitely a reflection of real life in a funhouse mirror
@@Foxarocious perfect description
kpop!! i had the dumbest, most judgmental stereotypes about kpop accepted in my head as fact before a friend made me watch a bts music video and my life was lowkey changed by their art completely. i cant believe how closed-minded i was about any non-western art before, but now i realize (duh) that kpop & all non-western music has the same bad apples, problematic industry standards, and potentially beautiful and life-changing content as western music.
duh.
i just wish more people could at least see that their opinions are influenced by others and not fact when it comes to non-english music, even if they dont like it...
Twitter is a great example of bandwagon hate. People make a hate tweet with thin logic and people jump to agree because its popular 🤷🏾♀️
Yeah, though I'm not a fan of BTS, people will definitely look back at them as legends years after their success.
yep people love to hate everything teenage girls love in general
I feel like artist who have a mostly teen girl audience and are really good aren't considered good artist 'cause they don't have this ' male aproval'
While I don't vibe with K-pop, I can't really call BTS bad, especially when I have anime music on my Liked Songs playlist
Yeah it's definitely rooted in misogyny. It sucks because people are missing out on so much good music, films, art in general because the majority of the consumers are teenage girls or young women.

This man is the voice in te back of my head, like I know I have these opinions however they are the ones I never express
a strong opinion that changed for me was my view on anime.

Yeah but what separates Reddit is that it has communities. On twitter everyone is everywhere

I saw the exact opposite an hour after it dropped smh
I think the main beef with The Weeknd was that biphobic shit from before. People (including me) just don’t let that shit go the way others expect them to, and then there’s a “Weeknd is trash” hate train where-clingers on who don’t know the original context are happy to rip something apart just because they can.
And of course there are people who are contrarian for attention. We all know of at least one person like that.

I randomly got this in my recommendation and I am glad it did. Because this is genuinely great. I pretty much agree with you said here. its crazy!! now that u say that im very glad to have consistently liked her since speak now, even when people rolled their eyes at me for “going with the crowd” or it was more accepted to praise her publicly-at least i know one thing for sure, which is that i DONT just like her because the general public does lol
Didn't like her during her "squad" days, I thought she was shallow af and her music was pretty uninspiring. Then I came across her documentary and realise how much she's grown and matured since then and I like her songs now!! Ppl on the internet don't appreciate that people can grow and change over time, for better of for worse..
This video just proves you have an immaculate taste in music thanks for linking all the songs in the desc king 🥺
Gotta give respect to those who can change their minds based on how much they've grown.
However I do hope that only applies to popular media and not things like human rights.
I agree. There’s certain things that you just can’t have an opinion on cause it’s not a matter of opinion.
while this is true, i still don’t think we should phrase it as “you should be able to take in info and change your mind about stuff EXCEPT in these cases,” because that will actively harm any growth EVEN in those cases by making u associate certain things as unchangeable & certain things as not.
what i mean is, every person can have their own unshakeable beliefs, but sometimes we see other people share their unshakable beliefs and go “well, that means i must accept and perpetuate this opinion without learning more about it.” an example i can think of is the israeli-palestine conflict; it is a VERRRYYY complicated and nuanced issue but people online treat it like it is simple, and u must be entirely for one side or you are entirely against it. all that means is sooo many people with “opinions” on it know nothing about the issue at all, and if no one knows anything but they are NOT allowed to question, then how on earth will a conflict get resolved?
TL:DR; i might personally agree with u, but im still against trying to establish a generally accepted idea of what opinions are and arent allowed to change

No one said it's objectively bad.
