  • I love the Katana 50 and use it heavily and regularly, but how does the Nextone stack up in the tone dept? Does it earn its higher price point?

      I have the Katana Artist, and it does sound different than the Katana 100 due to its cabinet build and Waza Craft speaker. This is a great video, but not a truly fair comparison. Also, the video shows different EQ settings on each amp, so that may be another reason for the differences in tones. Anyways, thanks for sharing! Good stuff.

    Between the very insightful comments and the absolutely ridiculous ones, I’ll offer mine. I play out of a Trainwreck Rocket amplifier. The model was built for me in 1990 by Ken Fischer of Trainwreck circuits. I will say that for a completely synthesized sound, the next Nextone Offers good modeling for what it is. I use it at my small local gigs and at my open mic nights. People are shocked by the tone. I don’t care much for the katana, as I find it hard, sterile and dry. But that does have It’s purposes as well. Thank you for making this video

    The Nextone is suppose to model the four classic amplifiers; Fender Princeton, Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, VOX ac30, Marshall.
    Add pedals and it act just like the classic tube amps.

    • @8sigreg
      @8sigreg 5 років тому +2

      Dave Ami Well, not quite. Nextone doesn’t model specific amps, because it doesn’t model anything. It has an analog signal path, with a DSP to control how it reacts to the speaker impedance as it changes and an editor to tweak the amp’s parameters. 6V6, 6L6, EL34 and EL84 power-amp sections are recreated in solid state circuits and the individual power-amp tube types can be tweaked in the editor to sound similar to a wide range of amps using that particular tube, so, 6V6 could be a Princeton, a Deluxe, a Champ, or someone else’s 6V6-based amp. The same is true of the other three tube types.

    The Boss Katana 100 2x12 is the best bargain out there. It's way better sounding than the 50 watt version and can be found cheap on the used market. Hangs in a live setting no problem and takes pedals well too.

    Hey there! I own both amps, but the opposite. I have the 100w Katana and the 40w Nextone. I used the Katana extensively on casino gigs (mainly R&B), and was just so pleased with the sounds. Loved it. I then went into a second-hand music store and played the Nextone. It blew me away; so natural sounding! I was already over the Moon with the Katana...but the Nextone absolutely kills! Both are staying in my amp arsenal. Love them. Thanks!
    BTW...I super lucked-up on the price of my used Nextone in mint condition. The store was reopening after the Covid shutdown, and it had been returned to the store twice ( pretty sure by Beethoven and Helen Keller). I got it in perfect condition for around $260! They needed a sale.

  • @ryanpbodfirst8616
    @ryanpbodfirst8616 5 років тому +1

    Thanks for the video - really interesting comparison! I bought the nextone stage and loving it. By the way - you can get full clean headroom on the clean channel by using the app and pushing the bias voltage on the output valve right up and the saving that back to the amp - so you can get 40w of clean!
    The app and control over the preamp and output valve control is what makes this amp special - you can get huge overdrive sounds for example by putting the preamp in the app in pre and pushing the output level. Boss are really on to something here! I've got it set up so the clean is on the American eq stack with maxed out bias so I get total clean power and then I'm using the British eq stack on the lead channel with a bit more preamp gain and rolled off highs.

  • @leeallen2301
    @leeallen2301 5 років тому +14

    Gonna play devils advocate here. When you were doing the “gain” channel comparison, the nextone has some reverb on it and the katana was dry (no reverb). That will make a big difference. Also the katana 50 doesn’t have a presence control, but the nextone does, and you had it set to max. I could definitely hear the reverb and the punchier sound of the presence nob on the nextone so I don’t think this is a fair comparison. Unless theres some magical difference when you are in the room, I’d find it hard to justify valve amp money (or close to) for the nextone artist.

    I like what Boss/ Roland do to build something that will work with many different music situations. For what it's worth the Katana is universal while the Nextone Stage is for more serious applications it feels and plays alot more like a tube amp, lucky me I also own a Roland Bluescube Aritst. I placed all three amps in the same position got the volume levels at low gigging levels for my comparsion. As we know there is a sweet spot for 12" speakers to allow it move some air. Next I played clean a little crunch and some more gain but nothing like metal. IMO I felt the Roland Bluescubes ressembled more natural feel and sound than the other 2. Next was the Nextone Stage it did perform well but I think they missed that saturation of gain by adding to much bass into the algorithm a bit to flabby at higher volumes and yes the Kat though sounded good didn't have the responsivness but hey it was also much much cheaper to purchase has utilities that could be placed next to your PC without being to noticable and sounded great at lower bedroom levels. The winner of course is the amp that produces your sound your personality and might be an amp with a Boss or Roland Logo. Yes I played in bands Yes I own very good valve amps Yes I know have GAS and my home studio is now got a family of Solid State and all Valve amps living under the one roof.

    Good comparison! Nextone wins this hands down, but I find the Katana 50 to be rather boxy-sounding anyway. IMO, The 100 sounds a lot more full and open, and when it's really moving some air, can hang with tube amps three times its price... That’s cool, but I think it is very much in the room as you said. I liked all your playing examples and like them both, thanks for doing the video!

    The problem with all the transistor amps is they will give you 10k sounds. I don't want 10k amp simulations that mostly are junk. I just want ONE great sound that I have in my head! I use a H&K Tubemister 18 with 2 12" cabs. That right a 18 watt tube amp. It's loud enough to play small and medium size rooms and when we play large rooms or outside shows I just mike it or run directly to the board. The best part is when we go to the studio I just bring my little amp in it's carry case and my guitar. If they ever make a transistor amp that just makes one great sound with all the nuances of a tube circuit I'm in. The manufacturers need to quit trying to make a amp that tries to make 10k different amp tones. I think if they spent their time emulating one great tube circuit they would be far better off. Just my two cents.

    The Nextone kicked the Kantana's butt via youtube. Kantana sounded like someone threw a towel over it. Maybe it's different in the room.
    But, you ignored the key point of the Nextone, which is the 6V6, 6L6, EL34, EL84 targeted emulations (Ex. Fender, VOX, Marshall popular amps). Of course, Mr. Kantana has his own set of emulations for the the same variety of amps... so a demo of the Kantana emulations matching the Nextone emulations is what we really need.

Volume for volume that the Katana required less of a volume bump than the Artist? I own a Kat 100 that I have had for over a year.. I also own a Nextone Stage for 2 months now. So I have the flip side of your review in a way.
    If both amps are sitting side by side I will always choose the Nextone ... It just sounds better to me. Note I am only an at home player so a gigging player will have different takes ..
    The main knock I have heard on the Nextone is that for some it just does not have sufficient headroom for gigging and most feel the Kat is better at high gain stuff... Both a non issue for me.
    That said, comparing amps serves a purpose but the comparisons are only as useful as the person doing the tweaking .. This is not a knock on you Ryan, just a fact that any reviewer will face. These amps with all their EQ,ing settings can be made to sound pretty much however a user wants them to sound, provided the user know what they are doing and has the time to do the tweaking.
    We've all seen the reviews where someone bought a Katana and returned it in 2 days or so.. Then they go on to make comparisons with their $1000+ Tube amp. Somewhat impossible to take a review like that seriously imo..
    I think it is also a fact that sometimes person A, can't dial a tone in to save their life, where person B, is a master at getting the tone they want..
    For my use the Nextone is my preference. I like the Nextone Editor software Much better than Kat Tone Studio. It is much more streamlined and gives better control over the amp section imo. I find it is much easier/simpler to get tones I like with the NT.
    The Kat with all it offers, I feel like I am paying for a lot of over kill and features I have no use for. The Katana line is quite the bargain though.. No mistake there at all.
    Now that I've been using the NT for a couple of months I see no reason not to sell my Katana.. I simply don't have much need for it.

      Thanks. I'm torn between the Kat Artist and the NT for my upgrade for the Kat 50. Don't need all the stuff with the Kat. Just a few good classic tones. Does the tone of the NT sound that much better. I'm getting either the Kat Artist or NT Spec.

    • @jhhorvath1
      @jhhorvath1 3 роки тому

      I feel just the opposite. I cut my teeth playing a 1965 Fender Vibrolux Reverb for 25 years, and find that solid state or modeling amps can’t quite get the clean tones right. I think it’s easy to get overdriven tones to sound good on a solid state or modeling amp, but the cleans? They just pale to what a Fender black-face amp does. Your mileage may vary.

    I'll reserve judgment until I compare them side by side on my own. The audio for the Nextone appear to be brighter but also louder than the Katana. At this point, it's sounding like a little hype. The cabinet difference will contribute to a less boxy sound from the Nextone. Kind of like a Blues Jr because of it's cab size. Good review though. Not sold on the price difference. The Nextone with the Katana effects with more programmable effects and banks would be perfect!

    I hold the same opinion of this as I do the Katana vs a relatively expensive tube amp... the Nextone sounds better, but I'm not sure it sounds hundreds of dollars better. For my part, I'm using the Katana for small gigs so I don't have to cart my pedalboard and a heavy amp around, and for session work I'm saving for a Kemper.

    I tried to cop Mayer's Two Rock tone on Slow Dancing In A Burning Room with my Kat 50. The clean mode eq got the tones pretty good, totally gigable. But, it was missing this certain tube thing that I think the Nextone focuses on. How this would benefit the Mayer song I don't know. Is the Nextone a chameleon like the Kat?

    The Nextone is an amazing amp but it's all about the editor software. You can literally dial up everything from shimmering clean tones to way over the top high gain. EQ, sag, bias, is all in the software. In my opinion, it completely smokes the Katana. It has way more balls, versatility and is more realistic and professional.

  • @Tarsan97
    @Tarsan97 2 роки тому

    I see comparisons like this before. They sound naturally different always so do the speakers that are mounted in them. It is possible to get sound so similar that the difference becomes almost academical given the speakers are same size, but then you must try to create one ( like the Katana) to sound as a copy of the other one.
    I seen this done on youtube using computers and stuff to measure the graphs of the tone frequency's. Work with that for a while and I think you will come close.

  • @JohnGalt539
    @JohnGalt539 5 років тому +5

    They both sound harsh as hell, I hate Katana's overdriven channels, tried Nextone wasn't impressed either, I have Katana 100 since it came out and the amp is great but I swapped the speaker for Celestion g12, and I use Angry Driver distortion for the gain and it sounds killer, I bought foot controller and expression pedal at this point it's $750 amp, and that's allot of money I wish I could've spend on Marshall DSL 40 instead.
