I helped find his grave in Camden, MS recently - honored to have been a small part in this man getting the recognition he so deserves - there will be a tombstone dedication in early 2018, if you're around the Jackson, MS area, you should plan on coming!
I saw pictures of the finished headstone. This was an amazing campaign to finally find and mark his grave, he deserves it. Thank you for being a part of it.
he was a farmhand. this video was shot by Alan Lomax, a rich white guy with old Texas blood who travelled throughout the south with his father in the 30's to record "roots" music from prison workers and farmhands. needless to say, he followed in his father's footsteps.
Undoubtedly one of the finest musicians I have ever witnessed,.. Funny thing is,...,... the banter in the background,.... like,... 'ol Belton is just doin' what he does,... no one takin' much notice,... just kinda groovin',... thats what we do,..... we don't care much,... but as we all know,.... and Belton without a doubt,... ther's always the 'ol Lady tellin' us to "put that fucking thing down" ,,.... hollering and scorning,... every time,...Fuckin Love it,... I got 23 years of it...
I miss this sound of the background sounds in the south. I always felt like I was at home when I use to visit both my grandmothers and other relatives. The music makes it even more reminiscent!
NO. DOUBT. This is so stupidly amazing, blows my mind.... and I think that's not even his guitar, I think it's a guitar Alan Lomax was taking around with him just-in-case. --Can you believe like his friends are talking in the background, no big deal, it's just another day... like wow, he had no idea he was SO magnificent.
YES! He OWNS the Blues. All others pale in comparison. Thank you Lord for sending him to us for a while. We are all richer from his rime here on earth. Heaven got the best. See you someday, Saint Belton.
Man, I wish I could find more info about him and his music. I stumbled upon a few short videos of these jam sessions and I'm completely fascinated by this man. Such raw and genuine music, and just the look is his eyes carry so much history and soul. It's a shame we have so many artists, such as Mr. Sutherland, of whom we know so little about. Thank you so much for sharing! :)
NightFlower : Belton was born in 1911. He died in 1983. He's buried in an unmarked grave in Mississippi, next to his mother. Her grave is marked. Not much information about him other than that and these few videos.
No, it's all in context, in the moment and in the sound of what the individual is feeling at that moment. You do whatever you want, and express it how you want. Besides, this whole piece sounds absolutely sweet as sugar cane to me. The tuning of the guitar didn't even cross my mind apart from to remind me that i can play my guitar, how i like.
He's in standard tuning, before anyone asks. It's fun to learn about some of the strange tunings used in blues, but this is just simple feel and tone with standard tuning. Belton is Brilliant...beautiful hill country drone here.
do any of you guys know where can I find more of this godlike blues master? I cant believe that we only have 2 or 3 things from this guy! Damn he was on the blues side man
Nothing else exists of him beyond what Lomax did. Belton likely had a family and stayed behind in MS while others went north to Chicago and whatnot. He focused on feeding the family - and thus, never recorded professionally or even was noticed.
It's not about being in tune. It's about the emotion and experience. Get it together. @grambutler is right. To good for words. So don't think to hard on this music or you'll miss the entire point.
I want you to love me or leave me girl / anything you wanna do I want you to love me or leave me / anything you wanna do What a strange thing happened someday might happen to you Well you say you're gonna leave me / Say you're goin away Well you said you're gonna leave me Pearly Mae / Say you're goin away I say luck beats a fortune / you'll come back home someday. I say luck beats a fortune / Pearly Mae you'll come back home someday
Tired of sleeping, low-down lonesome cell Tired of sleeping there, low-down lonesome cell And I wouldn't've been here, hadn't've been for Nell Kill that old grey mule, burn down the white man's barn Kill that old grey mule, burn down that white man's barn I didn't mean no trouble, I didn't mean no harm I want you to love me or leave me, girl, anything you wanta do I want you to love me or leave me, anything you wanta do What a strange thing happenin', someday might a-happen to you Well you say you gonna leave me, said you're goin' away Well, you said you're gonna leave me, pretty Maggie, said you was goin' away I said, luck be the fortune, you'll come back home some day I said luck beats a fortune, gonna make you come some home someday
It's not out of tune, its a dropped tuning (C# I think). It's also why ithese songs have that hurting haunting thumpy feel that compliments Belton's voice perfectly.
He was quite good on that video. But must be REALLY OBSCURE. Never heard of him before. I know many, many, many original blues people. Proably one of those talented unknowns. Any Info? I added this video into my playlist of UNKNOWN BLUES LEGENDS anyway :-)

That's The Truth..Alan Lomax..Great finding This Being An Lover of Blue's!(&In NZ.) Thankful in Dunedin NZ.❤
Pulled me in and gave me chills literally with the first note. Bonamassa can't stir a single emotion with 10,000.

Belton Sutherland is an amazing name for a bluesman
And his playing is even more amazing
Such a great tempo. The whole song is foot tapping from the start. The crickets in the background just add to the vibe. Wonderful piece of film!
At night in the south you are hearing a mixed choir of katydids, crickets and tree frogs.
Watching the guy's face while listening makes it so much better.
Just the heavy real blues. Thanks Belton we ne will never forget...
No better words have been spoken in regards to Belton. Thank you.

Absolutely awesome. This guy only recorded three songs? Very thankful that I was able to hear at least one of them!

@@OrangeAlienStatus No he is not in open D. He is in standard tuning with the guitar tuned down at least one whole step.
Goosebumps
I don't pity the blind, I pity the one who don't want to see. This is the awful TRUTH and can't be diluted. God bless the true american music.
