  • Here's how to turn almost any styrofoam creation you can think up, into solid aluminum. It's almost like magic! :)

    WARNING:
    Charcoal foundries can reach temperatures in excess of 1,000ºC, which is well above the melting point of hobbyists. This project should only be attempted with adequate knowledge and training, proper protective safety gear, and in a fire resistant area with adequate ventilation. The sparks flying from the foundry can ignite fires, and the fumes from burning dross can be toxic. Use caution and common sense. Be safe and have fun, but always remember that any project or experiment is at your own risk.

    Project Inspired By:
    This project was inspired by 2 videos. If you check them out, please let them know that Grant Thompson sent you. Thanks! :) First was a “lost foam casting” tutorial by “The Art of Weapons” (bit.ly/IBRamboneSlingshot) and a Rubber Band gun designed by “RBGuns” (bit.ly/IBM9RubberBandGun). I modified the template from RBGuns to make the styrofoam mold.
    Project History & More Info:
    The gun is solid aluminum, made from melted down soda cans.
    I spent over 100 hours of time, and 7 styrofoam prototypes to make this video. About a third of the time was spent filing and sanding the gun. Each time I poured a casting for the gun, the trigger guard wouldn’t complete all the way through, so I kept making new styrofoam guns, modifying the designs slightly until it worked.
    Once I got a fairly clean casting, I put 2 days into filing down rough points, and sanding them smooth.
    The gun could use a little more work, and it’s not perfect, but this experiment was mainly a proof of concept that nearly anything you can imagine can be made fairly easily with the “lost foam casting” technique. Overall, I really am happy with the gun though! It weighs 556 grams, and is really quite smooth to feel.
    For future projects, I plan to work more with green sand casting. I believe it will leave a nicer finish overall and won’t require as many prototypes to get it right :) Instead of foam, wood plugs can be used to make the molds, or even real weapons for that matter.

    *Hey guys! I wasn't planning to make this into a tutorial, but SO many people have been asking for it, I went ahead and did it for you. Some of my inspiration came from “The Art of Weapons” (**bit.ly/IBRamboneSlingshot**) and “RBGuns” (**bit.ly/IBM9RubberBandGun**). I modified the template from RBGuns to make the styrofoam mold, and love it. Show some love and check their work. :)*

      ***** It would fail. Aluminum isn't strong enough. Though I think you could create an all-aluminum engine, aluminum simply isn't resilient enough to stress or temperature. Also an aluminum frame would be weak. There's a reason cars aren't made in all aluminum.

      technically you could glue the styrofoam layers by melting them with really diluted acetone, but i really have no idea if this would even work, it's the first thing that popped into mind. Can someone confirm?

    • @SheepInACart
      @SheepInACart 9 років тому +2

      Davide Dopesick
      It'd be very difficult to do as even a tiny amount of acetone will destroy a huge volume of foam, and as the acetone flashes off it will set as a very high density compared to the surrounding material. On the other hand common PVA glue, hot glue and 2 part bonding resins will all work fine, so your local hardware store (or even supermarket) certainly has some good options to join your foam.

      Ha. I guess. I don't think the kind of aluminium being used is strong enough to be effectively used for a lower frame, and you definitely can't use aluminium for the slide. You would be better off using a strong steel.
      This technically isn't illegal either. You can make and manufacture your own gun without a serial number in your backyard if you want. America yay!

    • @wandelgartking5446
      @wandelgartking5446 9 років тому

    • @kabloosh699
      @kabloosh699 9 років тому

      Wandelgart King Maybe. I don't know what level of hardness you need to make a proper gun frame. You wouldn't want to be doing any casting anyways. You would likely want to mill it out. Plus, you'll still need some steel parts. The lower frame is what is considered to be the gun anyways and it isn't illegal for you to make your own gun either.

      It needs to be polystyrene, not polyurethane. Styrene is the softer stuff that breaks into little beads (very squeaky when put under stress) that is often used as packing material (the random corner blocks in furniture boxes). Urethane is the harder, crunchier stuff that looks like packed blocks of snow that crumbles into "flakes". That stuff cuts horribly and does not melt well at all. The stuff in amazon boxes is likely styrene, and should work just fine. If you don't have a styroslicer, or you're working on something smaller, careful use of a hobby knife should cut through styrene without too much struggle (just watch your hands). I'm speaking from experience on this stuff after lighting a plastic bucket on fire (read: melted it and spilled molten aluminum in my yard) because I didn't do a couple of steps correctly and used the wrong material.

    • @bigrenegade7121
      @bigrenegade7121 6 років тому

      Polyurethane is a lacquer not a plastic. Packing "peanuts" are eithe polypropolene or polystyrene. Polystyrene is the one to use. Polypropolene is the stuff plastic bottles are made of

My first styrofoam casting didn't go well, and I made some mistakes and learned from them. So before you try making your diorama this way, I suggest that you try making some other objects this way to get some experience with it.
