The early production Series 1 E Type that this car was based on did not have power steering. In production form it was difficult to maneuver at parking speeds but as velocity increased the car came into its own and less effort was required. The rack and pinion steering transmitted a lot of information back to the driver, allowing for easily controlled powerslides. But if one fitted wider race tires, or radial tires, then the car became very difficult to steer, especially when the suspension was heavily loaded as in a slide. The right hand drive setup also required a bit of practice if one was used to left hand drive. With only 4 ratios there is a big gap between gears, especially in a car geared for 150+ mph. I owned several E types over many years and none of them could be shifted quickly. The Series 2 Jaguar built gearbox was a big improvement over the Moss gearbox used since 1949 until 1964. This car probably was fitted with a racing gearbox with straight cut gears as they are stronger, but without syncromesh timing is everything.

Looks like it is a bit of a handful to drive. There were a couple of very quick E-types when I was a kid racing at Brands Hatch that could give the Cobras a bit of a run. Very cool and great video. Thanks.
Lightweights and lowdrags are slightly different. I'm not sure on the exact specs of each, but while the lightweights were a proper factory run, the lowdrags tended to be private and modified from either lightweights or standard cars.
Faster though. And the changes add a certain dynamic to the racing that's much needed in these days of aero-dependence making overtaking so difficult. That's the price you pay for 'progress'.
@Franzino01 Well it doesn't matter that much, but I find it very weird that someone fits a non-round steering wheel like this in to something what isn't a formula or something with very quick steering ratio. This is a very beautiful car but hearing it run in this video I doubt those carbs are jetted properly.
They're not bad. Road cars at least had a synchro box (although not on first on early cars) and the all round hydraulic disk brakes were excellent for the time, and are still good by modern standards.
Officially, at least, the lowdrags and lightweights are different. Maybe you old school lot have different names for it all, but that's how it's filtered down and is known today.
Fantastic car -- driver not so much. You never coast into a corner in neutral let alone half the other stuff that was going on. Driving lessons recommended -- and I have raced an E-Type!
Turicum44 This is way late to the conversation but I have an inkling the guy is an American somewhat new to left handedness. Which may account for the apparent handling problems in the turns also. Too busy with feet and shifter and then late.
They are difficult cars to drive fast, on vintage type narrow tires and probably a crash box and rock solid brakes and clutch but Mr Mathai needs to work on his steering smoothness.
Certainly makes things more interesting when it rains, to have slicks. Probably the only interesting thing in F1 anymore, although the British Grand Prix this year was quite fun. Tyre related, coincidentally.
Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they even want to slow down all the gas pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.
I just want to point out that it's a heavy duty classic muscle car WITH NO POWER STEERING. The guy can probably drive really well, it's just the cars handling. It's awful.
Beautiful car, lovely sound. But a lousy driver. Somebody teach him how to down-shift. He can't even double-clutch and he's about as smooth as a truck on a pot-holed road. I guess when you're rich it don't matter.
Fantastic car but very poorly driven, try bliping the throttle on down changes and be smoother with the steering wheel smooth is fast. And why do you run on very old Dunlop Tyres.
The car could use some wider tires but still damn awesome car..The driver will get better in time. As far as double clutching, I never did it and never had to when racing.
Sure is ordinary driving. Gear changes slow going up or down, no heel and toe. Looks like he is fighting with it more than piloting it. Car set up is bad too - for starters steering wheel not centralized. Maybe twitchiness in steering due to current set up.Going by video tendency is for oversteer. What a shame , this is a big money machine, wide angle cylinder head, aluminium block, all the latest whizz bang stuff. Kind of begs for top shelf driving and set up. Points awarded for having a go.

Nice Video but why no heel/toe downshifts?? I am astonished a vintage racer at this level is not capable of something so basic.
You cannot be serious.
Yes very bad driving...
Matthias you're a shocker of a driver
Very cool video. I felt like I was there. Love the Jags, Cobras and Ferrari's.

Love the Batgirl graphics, and the soundtrack!
What Paul said. Just cuz you own the car don't mean you can drive it. Throttle should be blipped on down shifts to match the RPM's. Nice sound though.
THANK YOU FOR UPLOADiNG!
love the gearshift at 3:56

Bit of a handful but I'd swap places with him in a heartbeat....thanks for posting
sir, may I know is it locked differential
???
what an amazing classic race car!!
Changing gear ON the bend ?? I don't think so .
Faster though. And the changes add a certain dynamic to the racing that's much needed in these days of aero-dependence making overtaking so difficult. That's the price you pay for 'progress'.
“… slurping DCOE Webers….”
Ever since reading that decades ago, I’ve called Weber carbs “slurp-slurps.”
Money can buy such wonderful cars but it can't buy the driving skills to make it competitive on track !
The tyres look fresh, I believe Dunlop still produce this pattern for the classic market.
warum steht denn das Lenkrad so schief bei dem?

Love it
@gintonicmunich looks really hard to handle when cornering
What the hell is he doing with that steering wheel?

@trytox
das sieht man öfter mal wenn instrumente - insbesondere drehzahlmesser - verdeckt würden.
Yes.
Mann, ist das ein launisches Biest! Macht aber jede Menge schönen Lärm ;-)
Well, that is stretching it a bit, don't you think..
Like it !!
Let me mist a little nitromethane into those carbs fer ya...KAAABOOM !
'All the gear & no idea'

Gostei do carro, mas acho que tem alguma coisa errada com o piloto. Fiquei agoniado nas reduzidas!?!?
They are difficult cars to drive fast, on vintage type narrow tires and probably a crash box and rock solid brakes and clutch but Mr Mathai needs to work on his steering smoothness.
Some one get Chris Harris in here.
The actual car is lovely. Well, I find mine to be.
he does not use his brakes just brakes with the engine
Great noise!
Really gotta wrestle the ol' E-Type around the green hell, eh?
Certainly makes things more interesting when it rains, to have slicks. Probably the only interesting thing in F1 anymore, although the British Grand Prix this year was quite fun. Tyre related, coincidentally.
Parece que esta trocando marcha de um caminhão!!!?!?!?!?
Rodeo und drift challange, aber sorry keine saubere Linie, trotzdem klasse video!

hard work :-)
Man, it seems you're driving a rototiller....
No doubling clutch

sieht sehr schwer aus, das ding zu handlen
doesn't anyone notice his steering wheel is offset, that must mess with your brain to turning direction man.
well - that looks more fighting than riding...
Not the best set-up car in the world but a wonderful video nonetheless!

th e first cobra hardtop sounded the best of the lot, sweet Caroline 289

The steering on the cat is horrible.
Demanding cat... :-)
der sound *_*
Thanks for the film,
but the driving is very shabby.
Car poorly set up, steering wheel off centre, Webers coughing.
Almost embarrassing.
someone need to teach him how to drive it first.
Herr Mathai is not the smoothest driver ever, is he ;-) ?!

This is what happens when your DD is a PDK equipped GT3. You absolutely forget how to drive a proper sports car.
My granny's a better driver -- and she's dead.
something familiar (!) about that reply
Cam !!ss x 2
bad driving of a very nice car
This guy couldnt drive nails into wood....
He has won races on the Nordscliefe circuit at Nurburgring I think he can do a bit more than just drive nails into wood.
in that case they were all shite
Great car, lousy driver. Yes, I have raced E-types and I'm a professional driver.
That has to be the worst example of driving i have seen for a long long time.
Poor car :(
The usual - money to buy the car but no driving skill.
even my dead grandma does a better downshifting.
it hurts all double clutch racindrivers and grandmas .
Funny watching the guy spraying petrol all over the engine, if someone did this to my e type. I would be kicking them up the ass.
it's going in the intake, not all over the engine.
+Mark Thorne Im surprised they did that suppose it backfired, OMGas fire
