1945hrs in my part of the world. End of another hot summers day. Nothing better than to watch someone knockoff a quick repair and for the entire bit of kit to be completely back fully operational. Much more satisfying than my day at my work...
Thanks for the heads up on the top screw, mine practically exploded from my removing screws that I didn't need to too! lol! I fiberglass backed the speakers to attenuate so much treble, and my CFD-V10 sounds really nice now!

I was impressed at how much wasted space the radio had on the inside...great repair and superfast repair Dave! Congrats on you impressively growing subs....I remember back when you were just a few hundred subs, great job! ~Jack, VEG
Never used the tape nor CD player...just listen to the radio when dorking around in the garage...or outside in the backyard BBQing. Never used it on batteries, just AC. Thanks for the info. ~Jack, VEG
Nice repair! I think this one was worth saving, even if it wasn't by special request. Funny, I was just thinking the build quality was pretty good, others say it's not. I certainly compares well to the $35 boom boxes you get at Big Lots these days!
These things are way more cheaply built than i thought. These were built back in Sony's 90s heyday, 1996-1998 maybe? When I was a teenager, I had the top of the line version of this chassis that had an auto reverse tape deck, digital tuner, cloth speaker grilles, and an IR remote. That thing wasnt cheap either. I want to say it was 150 dollars. I am wondering what the inside of one of them looks like. The V10, V15, and V30 were very common models. I have never seen many of the high end models. The one I had was a CFD-S39
You obviously never saw the brightly colored plastic toy electronics made for little kids. The My first Sony line of portable radios were aimed at the vtech and fisher price aged kids, but with a Sony price. I have a picture out of the local rag when I worked at the shop and we were moving to a bigger store, and the 3 of us at the shop posed loading a Toyota van with crap. The boss had the my first sony recorder in his hands, I think I had a handycam in a box, and the other salesman had something else. If I find that picture I will put it up on my bench as a prop in a future video.
@@12voltvids I haven't been inside of much Sony stuff other than a whole bunch of TVs, some receivers and other hifi components, a couple early discmans, and video game consoles. I am guessing there isnt much to the My First Sony on the inside. They are tough as nails on the outside.
@@12voltvids oh wow. I have never really seen any of that My First Sony stuff up close. I had the poverty brown KB Toys Nasta "Take A Long" kids cassette deck (look it up if you don't know what I mean, you'll probably know it when you see it) when I was a kid in the early 80s. Those things were JUNK. I wasn't even rough on them, and a specifically remember going to buy a new one multiple times to replace the one that broke from regular use. The takeup or supply hub would just snap off from inserting and removing cassettes. You'd think that we should've bought a higher quality kids deck after the first one, but I think they were like 12.99 or something ridiculously cheap. They just came in a colorful unbranded box that said Cassette player recorder on the front.
NORMALIZATION OF IGNORANCE I thought the my first Sony stuff used the same type of plastic as the sports models. I always wanted a sports Walkman, but I ended up with a Panasonic Shockwave, which had more features for the price, but no dolby.
I like your little power supply and red veristat. hi there... i hv a problem with power socket inlet and the "3terminal leg" after ac socket hv been broken... can i jump the wire to contact the ac... i dont mind bout dc(battery) but i dont know how...
It kills me that the Japanese will keep the wire lengths so short as to make repair so difficult to save money in production but place 15 screws in the case to keep it together. These units were certainly never meant to be repaired that easily. I remember my first day in electronics... My teacher said" always check the power supply"
1pilotsteve Wouldn’t you want to keep the wires short to minimize interference, as well as to stop them from flopping around inside, causing both audible rattles and movement that could ultimately result in wire failure? My hunch is that the added cost of longer wires is less than the added cost of the more difficult labor to assemble it.
Hi, thank you for the video. I tried to solve the problem, as you showed, with my radio which is an old cd, tape and sony radio, but it didn't work. Maybe you could help me. It turns on for a second (just the time to let me see what appears on the small LCD) and then it turns off.. that's it! But I can't find the real problem.. please help!
Hey, I am based out of India and here the power voltage is 220V. I plugged a Sony boombox from the US here without using a step-down adapter, and now it is busted, doesn't work. Do you know what part needs to be repaired specifically for this? Your help is appreciated.
you're more than likely took out the power transformer you're going to have to find a new power transformer that outputs the correct output voltage and has the correct input voltage for your country in other words a 220 input and it's likely a 12 volt output. Chances are there's no other damage
@@12voltvids Thanks for your quick response. So this transformer is inside the device, because I did get a step-down convertor plug eventually (220 to 110) but it still doesn't work. I also called the authorised Sony service centre and they said they might not be able to find the parts. I will check in the open market then.
Nice fix. I bet it has better sound quality than present day cheap boombox players. Bought myself last year brand new Sony boombox with cd & cassette player and the sound quality is really thin, even with the bass booster switched on. My old 1992 Sharp boombox has much better sound quality but the CD player is broken, it's skipping and stuttering and the mechanism which moves the laser head is noisy. Any ideas what might be wrong with it?
Hi. I have a Sony CFD-S01 with power problem. I checked the switch you fixed in this video and it is not the problem. Actually it is sending the 12V into the board. Any other idea what might be?
To Sony's credit, this is better assembled than I had expected. And even the speakers seem to be quite allright for what it is. For looks, never liked this design, not even when it was brand new. As black plastic as it gets, reminds me of the dash of a Nissan Sunny. And everything got so rounded up from the mid 90s onwards, like it would make what otherwise would be a plastic box look more attractive. It did not ofcourse. Forgetable radio ;-)
@@westelaudio943 Sony makes a lot of plastic crap in china these day. Takes away a lot of the prestige they had once. Though can we blame them. I picked up a free TEAC Ad-3. It has the CD player on one side and cassette on the other, circa 1990. Is it normal that the 2 capstans run even without a tape in it? The belts are good, and all functions seem to work fine but I have no sound out of the tape deck. Can you point me in the right direction on this one? I'm 100% puzzled.
Are you sure it isn't running on batteries. With batteries installed and the AC cord inserted, if you unplug the AC cord from the wall it should go out, If not then it is running on batteries, and batteries are not needed on AC. There is a switch that gets activated when you plug the AC cord into the radio. If the wrong cord is used it may not be wide enough to activate the switch. In this case wrap a few turns of tape around the end of the plug to make it a little wider to activate the switch.
It is the correct A/C cord. My Sony CFD-8 works on A/C but the batteries have to be installed??? No batteries nothing works even plugged in. There is a red light on??
@@PaulCTownsend With batteries in does it shut off when you unplug it, or continue to play? (It should go off when unplugged. If not then the switch that switches between batteries and AC is not working.
@@PaulCTownsend So then it is not operating on AC. The switch that changes it from batteries to AC is not being activated. Most likely the wrong size cord is plugged in. Try wrapping some tape around the and of the plug to increase its size slightly. Otherwise the connector on the radio may be broken (the switch part) so the power cord is not activating it. There is a leaf switch that when there is no cord plugged in supplies power from the batteries. When you plug in the cord the leaf switch contact moves from the battery terminal wire to the power supply wire.
