🔍 Understanding the Approach:
The SDR version retains its original colors and dynamic range, residing in an HDR container to allow for an unbiased evaluation. On the other hand, the HDR version remains untouched, presenting the original 4K HDR Blu-ray experience. It's all about providing you with an accurate assessment of the visual disparities between these two formats. Keep in mind that the average Joe watches SDR on a non-calibrated TV at 200nits+. This video shows the original SDR 100nits range as it was graded.
🖥️ Device Compatibility:
For an authentic evaluation, I recommend watching this video on HDR-compatible devices. Feel the difference as HDR technology unfolds, showcasing its full potential. If your display doesn't support HDR, UA-cam will tone map the images to SDR(compress to 100nits) which is far from ideal.

No SDR tone mapped screenshot comparisons for this one, Sorry! The 1080p BD and HDR BD has different frames order and my automated scripts don't work for that so it must be done manually which was a pain to do for this video.
We understand, and it's awesome to see such a great comparison video between the Criterion UHD of Seven Samurai and the BFI UHD.
My BFI 4K edition just came in today, just finished watching that one, my Criterion 4K edition arrived last week. Confirmed what I expected after watching this excellent comparison. The BFI 4K edition looks better/more impressive/looks like more of an upgrade over the 1080p Blu-ray. The blacks are darker, the whites are brighter, pretty much what you would expect from Dolby Vision HDR. Impressive even on a black and white film. The Criterion 4K edition also looks good, everything just looks like a brightened grayscale in comparison to the darker blacks and brighter whites of the BFI 4K edition. Things like sword steel, flags, white spots on horses, sunny skies, white hats, fire, all just pop more with Dolby Vision HDR and look great. There are definitely subtitle translation differences between the two - I’m not a Japanese speaker but they appeared to be a bit better on the Criterion edition. The BFI 4K edition also comes with more collectibles like the postcard photographs and the awesome poster which is better quality than I expected. The Criterion 4K edition gives you the exact same packaging and contents that the 1080p Blu-ray edition contained, plus the new 4K disc. Since I already have the 1080p Blu-ray edition from Criterion, for the new 4K releases I would rather have the BFI 4K edition if I was only going to get/keep one of them.
Thank you. This is the dilemma I was facing. I got the BFI version. It's unfortunate about the subtitles as good writing/translation also makes an impact in how it delivers emotion and gravity of the scene. But I'll take the superior image over the subtitles difference.
My guess is tne BFI transfer is closer to black and white 35mm film. I haven't seen Seven Samurai projected, but I've seen Kurosawa's Throne of Blood in 35 and the whites were super bright and it had that almost platinum quality to the grays, with deep blacks. Lots of grain, too.
the SDR is criterion and HDR is BFI?
yes + the old 1080p BD
@RESET_-bg7kw So from what I can tell the BFI is better? Seem more brighter but also more depth.
Didn't expect such a difference
@@ben99ny69 Yep, IMO it is.
@@ben99ny69 You are incorrect. It has less depth and detail
