A very much under-rated movie. The part were the Lone Ranger first dons his mask and rides off and rescues Tonto from the gallows is great, even now.
Reminds me of the original Clayton Moore & Jay Silverheels.
    Great stuff!

I agree 100% with you. How can you not smile when that happens. I remember the audience cheering wildly at that scene, the scene where he first dons the mask and the climax of the movie when the Lone Ranger leaps onto Silver with the William Tell Overture blaring as he give chase to Cavendish. The movie is full of fantastic and heroic scenes. This movie is judged so harshly. I LOVE this film. The audience I saw it with loved it.

I love how everyone mentions how bad this movie was, yet it's actually really good. The movie had some solid performances, a story that stayed true to the origins, it took the material seriously and it was shot by one of the greatest cinematographers there is, Laszlo Kovacs. Watch this movie in widescreen format and tell me it's not one of the most beautiful westerns ever filmed. In many ways it's tighter and more focused than the 2013 Disney version yet tells almost the same story.

The film is cool, i dont think it was a terrible film tht others might say it is, i realy feel the film is a good interpretation of the legend of the lone ranger with a great soundtrack to go with this film, really good movie for its time in the eighties.

Clayton Moore as The Lone Ranger was in my opinion, probably one of the last true American heros and role models for us all. I would hope that as adults we would share the legacy of The Lone Ranger with our children and grandchildren whether its the 50's version with Clayton Moore or this 1981 movie.

Such an awesome video for such an underrated movie. While I enjoyed the 2013 "Lone Ranger" movie, the 1981 film was far superior in tone and story. I found out about this movie on The Cinema Snob, and looking at footage, I knew I had to track this movie down. Despite it flaws, it was very well written, well acted, and well shot. Shame this movie tanked, if Jack Rather didn't act like such a douche towards Clayton Moore, this movie would turned up a better profit at the box office.

I'm 62 years old and will always identify Clayton Moore as being the official Lone Ranger. However, I know the 1981 film was not a success, but time can sometimes work things out. Perhaps if it was re-released again with maybe some added material, our present generation would like it. This video was well done and I totally enjoyed it.

The audience reaction was exactly the same at the theater I saw this in. Agreed! It's so much better than many current summer blockbusters. I wish these haters could name a scene in a recent movie that's as cool as seeing Spillbury put on the hat at his brother's grave, the William Tell Overture kick in and a 2 minute montage of the Ranger and Tonto riding. Gold!

To be honest, seeing the 2013 movie in the Theater, the only great moment I can name is the climax on the train. But that was about it, everything else was unfocused and and very humorous looking back. But I'd still prefer this movie in terms of story and tone.

I wont say it is a lost jewel from comic adaptations, but it is a fine movie that deserved better. There is no way to compare this to that trash with Johnny "Creepy" Depp. Perhaps someday the major audience rediscover this and give it more credit. Thumbs up, thanks from sharing.

Her name was Juanin Clay. She also appeared in "WarGames" and was almost cast as WIlma Deering in "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century". The role of WIlma went to Erin Gray but Juanin Clay actually appeared in an episode of "Buck Rogers" called "Vegas In Space".
Juanin Clay died in 1995 at the age of 45.
The cause of her death is disputed. Some sources say she died of breast cancer, however the user-edited Internet Movie Database site says her death was caused by a heart ailment.

Thanks for putting this up. I remember watching this movie on cable when I was young. This version is way better than the crappy Johnny Depp version. Michael Horse was a better Tonto. This actor who played John Reid/Lone Ranger only made this one movie and thats it. I don't care what anyone thinks of the movie, the scene shown at 1:01 is one of my all-time favorites. Tonto about a half-second from being hung, then the rope snaps, the Wiliiam Tell Overture hits, and Tonto gives that little smirk that shows he was never really worried. Even if you don't like the movie at all, the spirit was perfectly captured in that moment!

I know this movie (The Lone Ranger) came before Back to the Future, but when I rewatched The Lone Ranger, all I could hear during when Kavendish (C.Lloyd) is telling his plan, was Doc Brown saying, "I'm sorry. i didn't have time to build it to scale."

Fans of Clayton Moore refused to accept another actor playing the Lone Ranger and boycotted the movie. Klinton Spilsbury never made another film after "The Legend of The Lone Ranger". Most of the blame regarding the disappointing box office returns was unfairly laid at his feet. It's a shame because he is my favorite Lone Ranger.

exactly. I know to younger kids we would sound like old farts. But some movies do hold up. This movie was NEVER ever even remotely bad at all. if it came out today in HD people would love it. The bad press at the time ( surrounding how the original actor was treated) was what cursed this movie for decades. I defy any critic to disect what was wrong with this movie. It plays out like BATMAN BEGINS

  • @careyleefisher
    @careyleefisher  17 років тому

It's not as bad as you've heard. This movie was unfairly bashed before it even made it into theaters. Fans of Clayton Moore were boycotting and bad mouthing it and a bad legal decision by Universal also helped to turn the public against it. It is a very entertaining movie and well worth checking out.

The creative team behind the "Pirate Of The Caribbean" films are involved and Johnny Depp, who is part Cherokee, will be playing Tonto. Still no word on who the new Lone Ranger will be. Though this flick may not have been a mega blockbuster when it played in theaters I do remember seeing it quite alot on cable tv during the early 80's and have later caught it on comercial television a few times too. And yes, though I'm not a childe of the 50's & 60's, I do barely remember the old tv show as it was still being run on local syndicated television where I grew up during the 70's and early 80's .

Respectfully, Clayton Moore was not the only actor to play the Lone Ranger. The Lone Ranger has been portrayed by Lee Powell, Robert Livingston, Tex Hill, Clayton Moore, John Hart and Klinton Spilsbury.
Mr. Moore may be the actor most identified with the role but he was hardly the sole actor to portray the Lone Ranger. Thanks for the comment, frostypo. I appreciate it even if you and I disagree.

  • @DaveC306

This version bombed because of a lawsuit not because it was a bad movie. Clayton Moore had kept the character alive for over forty years in personnel appearances. When this movie was released, he was told by the Wrather Corp., owners of the character, that he couldn't wear his mask and appear in public as the Lone Ranger anymore. His fans protested the action by staying away from the movie en masse. That is why it failed. If Clayton Moore had been honored instead, this movie would've been gold.

Yeah, I agree that the producers blew this badly. They did indeed treat Clayton Moore badly. It was really heartless to take the mask away from him. The man had little to no career after "The Lone Ranger" ended and was making a living from Lone Ranger appearances. The producers of "The Legend Of The Lone Ranger" basically took Clayton Moore's bread and butter away from him. I happen to like "The Legend Of The Lone Ranger" but hate the behind the scenes politics that helped seal the movie's fate.

brounbuck, I could not agree with you more. The producers threw Klinton under the bus simply because Klinton felt he should be compensated for all the extra work required to re dub the film.
The film was shot on location and much of the soundtrack had to be re done. Pay close attention to the film and you will hear that much of the movie, not just Klinton's voice, was dubbed over.
Producers will absolutely lie and pass the blame in a second.

Loved this film when I was a kid..the John Barry Score is awesome. Wish we could hear Klinton Spilsburys orginal voice. It would be awesome if they ever make a dvd to have a no narration option cuz it sort of is embarrasing now. The only thing I don't like about the movie now is that its too dark. And Awesome Video!!!!
