This is my second upload of this performance of 27 January 1977. The first had blips from the original cueing on my CDs, which have now been eliminated and which should make for a more satisfactory listening experience.
This magnificent performance was the last of three at the Vienna State Opera (Act 1 up to the end of the Emperor's scene at “Kann sein, drei Tage komm ich nicht heim” is from one of the earlier performances). The performances were the first revival of the 1964 Karajan production which had two performances, with Gundula Janowitz replacing Leonie Rysanek as the Kaiserin in the second. The DGG commercial recording was mastered from Austrian Radio tapes made during the series of performances in October/November 1977, when Matti Kastu was replaced by James King.(Apologies for the incorrect performance date shown on the video.)

I was lucky enough to attend one of the 3 January 1977 performances. I believe it was the 1st in the series. Rysanek was sublime - even more expansive in the "Vater, bist Du's" than here. I have rarely heard an audience so quiet as her voice floated out = there is almost no accompaniment at the beginning and she was absolutely magical. Kastu is over-parted to put it mildly. Berry is well-nigh definitive as Barak. A wonderful actor and a rock solid vocal technique. Nilsson was very clever to save this role for near the end of her career. No one expects beauty of tone in the long stretches of complaining and angry outbursts. Yet she still had the ability to convey a tender side in Act 3. The top notes are massive, if a bit straight toned, unlike the kaleidoscopic B's and C's of her prime. Böhm is in full command. I wonder what he felt about all the cuts that have become standard? Back to the performance, I remember being surprised that the house wasn't sold out, with that cast. A fellow standee told me FRAU wasn't actually that popular in Vienna! Except for 2 performances in 1964 - the Karajan new production (2 performances!!) - it hadn't been heard in Vienna since 1959. Astonishing that it wasn't packed to the ceiling!

Many, many thanks for uploading your 'revised' performance of this 'Die Frau'. Your 'clean up' operation is perfect - not a blip in evidence. Stirling work. If you have not heard it, but there is a shattering performance of the opera from the Colon under the much underrated Ferdinand Leitner on the 13th October 1970. Although there are cuts (especially in Act 3) - it is well worth a listen.

You're very welcome, Barry. I couldn't leave this wonderful performance the way it was. Leonie said when Munich gave her a new production for her debut as Salome in 1971, they gave her the best; Fischer Dieskau as Jokanaan and Leitner in the pit. I'll definitely seek out the Colon Frau. There are some astonishing performances out there from the Colon. J

@@starrman22 I remember having a delightful conversation with Miss Rysanek in Bayreuth 1965 (she was singing Elisabeth) and, years later, we went and visited her grave in Vienna. A moving experience.

I’ve only seen Frau twice. The first was at the Met with Eva Marton and Birgit Nilsson. The second was also the Met with Meagan Miller, Christine Goerke, and Torsten Kerl. All fantastic. To be honest, I’ve never quite understood the opera, but it’s quite overwhelming on the stage.
