To the dummies who say she's high on coke or whatever, she's dancing to a busy arrangement and matches her vocals and steps without a hitch. Eg, from 2:07 the shimmies, spins, high kicks etc have been rehearsed as a sequence. The band transitions as she does, and at the end of all that they start the song's middle section. She was a solid professional, still (at 38) a great performer, and "high" on adrenaline.
I saw this when it aired. I've always remembered when she did the kick at the end, sending the fringe over her head, and then putting her hat on over the fringe. Fun seeing this again. I miss the Labor Day Telethon!
There is something glamorous about both Live Broadcast "Network" Television and "Stars" of the Past. It seemed that Entertainers wanted to entertain and make their audiences forget about the problems of the day. Now, not so much. Thanks for sharing!
My older sis & i little girls love Joey Heatheron!!....just love this outfit she has on!!! Reminds me of a blond Liza Minnelli!! Soo talented....never seen this.....
I had scant knowledge of Joey's career and talent having seen her in only 3 films [This charge is murder, Where love has gone & My blood runs cold] in the early part of the 60's. What I didn't know was that she was such a complete entertainer. What a fantastic voice, what a range. She even gave Ann-Margret a run for her money. Some of her key notes were comparable to the great Streisand. Yes, Joey was also an ace dancer and I will stick my neck out to mention that no other Hollywood dancer had legs that could match curvy Joey's gorgeous gams. Sorry Ann Miller, you were the number 1, till I spotted Joey on UA-cam. The way she was built, she could easily have sent most men up in smoke. Yes, she was piping hot, and, perhaps, too torrid for television. But the bulk of her work comes from TV. Wow! what a girl, I spent most of my Sunday viewing all her TV segments including her shows with Bob Hope at Vietnam, and, boy, could she dance!!!
What is she on in this? I loved her dancing when I was a kid, and I never noticed anything, but as an adult, she really seems like she's on something :(
She is Amazing! The best! A powerhouse of a performer! Everything she sings and dances is a showstopper! Does anyone have her email or any contact information ? I am a performer myself and would love to contact her, I know it's a long shot but she is the ultimate performer!
So great a talent not to be missed from my days as a dancer + gogo dancer in the 60s still dancing when l can at my age Would have loved to have met her
By the time of this performance (1982) her peak as a performer was already a few years behind her. According to Catherine O'Hara (whose Lola Heatherton is legendary), Joey sent Catherine an autographed photo where Joey was wearing a mesh top that bared all, with the inscription "Try THIS!" Catherine took Joey's loopiness and Lola Falana's vibrating lip while singing, and created Lola Heatherton. Joey took it well, Lola didn't.
Joey had the cutest face and her platinum pixie cut would look perfect in 2021. I don't think she was a great singer or dancer....her dancing was energetic and kinda in a Vegas/Broadway/cabaret style. It wouldn't work today, imo. It was great for the 60s/70s. She was wildly popular, Ann Margret had the same style/persona.....
She combines "live" singing and dancing which Janet Jackson and Britney Spears would never attempt. I have to give her credit. Lip-synching wasn't an option back then I guess.
@@lasktdave I meant lip synching at the telethon wasn't an option. I suppose it could have been an option had she been a recording artist but I don't think there was a precedent for lip synching through an entire Vegas show at that time and I assume this was an excerpt from her show
@@jazzyvocalfan There was a lot of lip synching back then. Even on Broadway. In almost all of the big musical numbers in A Chorus Line that involved serious dancing and singing -there were back up tracks used in the theater. I was surprised too - but it's true.
Gotta love how trashy American tv used to be. For the record, Joey was a genuine beauty, she could sing well and danced like a pro. But this entire MDA telethon brought out the worst. I blame it on Jerry.
She's off her face. If she had been even a little bit talented she would have gone somewhere - but she never did. She was a Hollywood casualty who was popular on various TV specials with men, for obvious reasons, for a minute. This is embarrassing. Or sad, whichever way you look at it. There were truckloads of you people in show business at this time who were popular for a second then discarded for one reason or another. The reason is obvious in this case.
Have you seen the outfits Beyonce, Rhianna, Britney Spears and basically every performer in the past 20 years have worn? This is quite tame. It shows off her trim petite body and crazy legs in a classy way.

Simply the best. One of a kind.
Miss seeing you Joey!
She was fantastic. What a high energy song. The ladies back then came to belt it out and dance their tuches off.

2:50-2:52 Sally O’Malley. “I can Kick! And I can stretch; and I can Kick! 🦵

A kite with a great tail.
You can't sing AND dance like that high
Damn I had good taste when I was a child ! Oh yeah !

Not quite as good as SCTV's Lola Heatherton, but, almost.....

Lots of lipsynching even before those days. You ever watch American Bandstand or Top of The Pops, every live performance was lipsynched.

I'll have what she's having.
So schlocky and pretencious🤣

Great performance nonetheless, she gives it her all, shes enjoying it:)

i think shes messed up on something real good
Madonna and Pink stole a lot of her style
cocaine
Drunk.
How many drunks do you know that can twirl around like Joey does in a pair of heels? Haters gonna hate.
Train wreck. Always thought she was a two-bit version of the talented Ann Margaret.
She’s not Ann Margaret but she has a better voice
Wouldn't return your calls, huh?
