My mum was from Liverpool and I was born in Salford. A cousin of mine was at college with Tony Davies so I always feel really connected to the city, The Spinners and their songs.
there is no other place around the world that gets sung about so much as Liverpool...the greatest city i know. Born and raised there left in 1975 but get back as much as I can, love walking about the city and look at the changes that have been made, and going into the local pub great atmosphere and some good music.
Just seen this. So sad to learn But many fantastic memories of this group growing up with them. Good music however never dies This group the best version by far
I listen to this song and it's lyrics to remind me of my own home and personal past few days go by when I don't think of my root's and the people of Liverpool
I stumbled across The Spinners when I picked up a two-record vinyl of theirs in a charity shop. I still listen to it often, and this is one of my favourite tracks of theirs. It’s a lot more subdued than other versions, which I like.
As a kid living in Garston in the late sixties/early seventies when this song was on the radio I used to go down to Garston shore or Garston docks and saw the ship's I would imagine the long journey all sea bound. Oh Happy days !
Why were you exiled????? Do you remember The Liver Birds????? That was set in Liverpool, and I WAS COMPLETELY CRAZY ABOUT IT. I've never lived in or near Liverpool, but some good things have come from there.
A deeply felt version of this iconic song. Hugh Jones lived more or less opposite our house In Childwall and I remember often hearing the group practising there. Hugh's house was very close to that of Mick Fleetwood's aunt Norah, who was a friend of my mother. I was a classmate of John Lennon for five years @ Quarry Bank High and recall him playing his harmonica in the corridor outside the classroom as we waited for the teacher to turn up. Come on the Red Scousers of Anfield!
Biggest mistake of my life leaving my Liverpool home. Too late to return now but I'll forever be grateful that I grew up there with my wonderful mates and neighbours on our lovely road.
Too right..........67 years old ...been and lived everywhere.....missed the sarky humour, am definitively coming home 25 years in Cornwall..fuck that! (Miserable Bastards)!
Hughie lived in his parents' house, just opposite my parents house in Childwall: the group used to practise there. This is a superb rendition of a rousing Scouse song.
Memories of my teen years in Oldham Lancs. Happy Happy days, the music of that time will stay with us 60 plus year olds for ever (well until we pop our clogs that is)
I'm not QUITE 60+, I'm 58, so I'm not far off it!!!!! I LOVED THE SPINNERS IN THE 70's, AND STILL DO LOVE THEM. I'LL ALWAYS LOVE THEM, THEIR MUSIC AND THEIR LYRICS ARE AMAZING.
Hi. I've uploaded 11 The Spinners tracks so far which you may wish to check out. The two EPs went some time back but I still have 2 Spinners LPs in my online shop right now at the above link. I've also uploaded some songs by The Corries which you may like.
My pleasure, JF. In case you (or anyone for that matter) don't already know, the cover shows the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral to the left and the Liverpool Roman Catholic Cathedral to the right. Now how did it get to Australia ?... That'll be the leaving of Liverpool ...
You can take the lad out of Liverpool but you can never take Liverpool out of the lad, I was born and brought up there and left in the late 60s as the vandals of Liverpool City Council where demolishing every house thy could get their hands on in Everton and Anfield. Every school I went to and house I lived in has now disappeared and for what? clones of all the same houses with no soul or comunity
jas20per capitalist destruction. Thank Christ the Militant council defeated Thatcher and won the funds to build homes, schools and sports centres in the 80’s. Since then, labour and the Tories have sought to end social housing and lose any accountability.
The Spinners were part of my youth, wonderful days , Young, healthy , optimistic for change in the world.
Same here..the best of humanity!
well & truly said my friend.

it is never too late to return ..as they say you can take the boy out of Liverpool ...but not take Liverpool out of the boy. exiled in Canada.
You have to come back even if it's just for a day.
As the Ferry across the Mersey song goes "We Don't care want your name is boy , we'll never turn you away"
Always in your heart though eh. :)

I’m 37 and it reminds me of my childhood, mum and dad would play them on long car journeys, same with The Seekers.
Liddypool was always a very musical place. Being a port city, influences came from everywhere.
Cant find this group anywhere looked on tons of online shops. Used to listen to them when I was growing up.

They were brill live, I was lucky to have seen them at Pottshrigly and the Free Trade Hall in Manchester.
You can get them on UA-cam.
Thanks, MV. I have the UK-release EP - sadly, without the cover - but, as I'm in Australia, I'm not sure how it got here...

I live in the north of Scotland and it's the same here. It's tragic.
Mum used to have records of the spinners
They had their own TV show for a while as well. Very popular band.
@@MysteryVinyl My parents watched the show regularly and always enjoyed it!
