New Model Nintendo Switch - Is It Even Different? Let's Compare! Nintendo recently came out with an updated model of their Nintendo Switch. I bought one of the new Switches so I can take it apart and compare its internal components to the old model. One selling point for the updated model is that it's supposed to have better battery life so we take a look a the components that might affect that. I also show you the changes made to the joy-cons.

About This Video: In this video I'm taking apart the new model of Nintendo Switch and comparing it to the old model. A lot of things still look the same but there are some differences. For example, the CPU on the new model is smaller, there are some noticeable changes to some of the motherboard components, and also some changes to the analog stick on the joy-cons. Not a lot of changes but this updated model is supposed to have improved battery life which is always nice. And hopefully the changes to the analog stick will make those last better.

Because of you I bought a broken Switch from Ebay, tested everything as in your video's and concluded that the video chip was shot. Replaced it (had to put the hot air gun on 460 to get it off) after the new one it fired up straight away. Thanks for all the info you are sharing with us!
That's awesome! Love hearing this!
Hoy much you paid ?
Ben good job!
yeah how much u pay
Is it weird that I was expecting him to check for shorts. How do we know the new model even works? lol
The funny thing is that the right Joy Con didn't work! I didn't test it on camera and I'm kicking myself for it!
@@Tronicsfix Finding a short before finding the problem unlocks a special bonus in life I think.
high iq comment
@HandleBar3D I think I've heard that somewhere!
@@Tronicsfix So... the switch was defective out the box? am i reading this correct?
Why are your videos soo relaxing?
They're like therapy 😂
Glad you're enjoying them!
They actually are xD
right?! when i had a bad anxiety day i watched some of the switch fixing videos and it genuinely helped me calm down.
Lol so true
The joy-con part gave me ptsd. I’ve reshelled a few pair of joy-con and it’s a bloody nightmare. Watching him unnecessarily remove parts gave me anxiety. Lol
Yes but does the new switch have a "known" good battery...
Shrews brewery lol
Forgot where i saw it but apparently the screen is different. Has better white balance and better brightness.
Maybe on DF, they did an analysis.

@@connor2101 Yea that was it. Used a meter on the screen was pretty cool.
There is new switches with 3 different types of screens, some of them close to the same we had before, some way better and brighter.... you have to search...
WulffDen did it too, I think.
Your videos are very educational and helped me to repair my switch by myself and it works again!! , I dont know how I can thank you enough. Keep this amazing quality with your channel and looking forward on a Switch Lite teardown video!!
Love hearing this!
Hi
@@Tronicsfix your the best youtuber
The main reason they "updated" the Switch was to prevent homebrew/piracy on the Switch due to a hardware vulnerability in the original graphics processor. It couldn't be patched software wise, so they had to do an entire hardwarerevision.
The new GPU was smaller (I forget the nm), but due to the smaller, more efficient, chips, that translated into more battery life even though the battery is the same.
Of course, every console maker has different revisions and will incorporate other fixes into newer console revisions. But the MAIN reason that has been confirmed by multiple sources was to prevent homebrew/piracy from being run on the Switch.
They shrinked it from 20nm to 16nm FinFET.
So the older one will become more valuable due to the vulnerability?
@@estignatic Basically. If you looking to buy one i suggest a used one for obvious reasons.
@@Ishmon16 I've been having mine since day one and I'm definitely keeping it now so maybe it can be easily hacked like the 3DS.
@@estignatic I think a lot of people took etika advice and bought 2 just in case
I don't know how you don't have more followers. I could watch you take things apart all day long.
Man, I love watching these videos, please keep up the great content!

I wished to be this guy some day. Such a baller buying new consoles to disassemble
Good to know that the hardware parts stayed the same for repairing. Is the USBc port also the same? Thanks for the teardown!
great video, I like to watch your videos, they kinda relaxing even though I have no idea what I am looking at. Love the fact that you opened and compare to actually SEE whats going on in the new model. Great guy!
Your videos are therapeutic. You come across as a really nice guy. Always interesting content, keep up the good work and thank you 👍

For the ps4 pro do i need the exact same power model? Im having trouble finding the one i have can you help? Most look different from mine
I was watching the water damage indicator when you opened the new one. I'm a Switch repairer in training
@ 4:57 The top right corner of the boards; the chip layout is also different on the new board. You mentioned the ones around this change but not the ones directly in the corner.
Good video, I just have 1 question, are all the parts interchangeable?
Wow, still can see the difference between 16nm and 20nm die set size, thank you Tronics for nice information..
Hey Steve, I was wondering if you know of any good starter kit for soldering as I'm looking to learn how to repair and mod my consoles.
Hi, I have a question about the old switch - where can I buy a new fuse for the motherboard. What does the fuse have for the designation?
Bought the screwdriver. Absolutely love it!
Hey! I like your channel when I got to see the repair of 8 ...12 PS really nice way to show the things from inside.
From the last 7 years I had buy many earbuds particularly Sony I wish you could make a video on to fixing the broken earbuds like the one bud is working and another isn't.
Thanks for the screw driver link
No one cover possibles changes on the dock, i would like to see this but it's still a great video !
I love when he says , “ let’s see if it works “
I think you missed, revision numbers from each nvidia cpu , were load times the same or different, battery life differences. Thanks
Hi, do you know where one could find spare parts for a Nvidia Shield Android TV? Mainly the sata connector ribbon.
could anyone help me out? everytime I play handheld with my joycons attached the slightest wrong movement on my right joycon will trigger the prompt "Press L + R then A" (joycon disconnected screen).
I don't know what's wrong, I can't seem to find anything on google. is my switch broken?
Hey. Anyone know why my switch sounds like it has a loose bearing in the fan? Never dropped or anything.. is it supposed to be loose or something?
Man I really enjoy watching all your videos and i really learn alot from your videos, i can watch you for days! I Really like what are u doing.
Hey thanks!
Cool. Trying to decide whether or not to get the daughter a switch lite or an updated version. I'll wait for your switch lite teardown video to make that decision.
1 day ago?!? youtube cmon

Man i really love watching ur Videos :)!
I like how the thumbnail looks like you're presenting your new baby to the world.
I'd like to know if the new Switch showed similar numbers when connecting the power on startup (slow/fast charge)
wht's the name of the tool you are using at 0:36 and if there is a link from amazon that would help a bunch ! thanks for the video btw
Does the new switch use the same screws as the original one? I got some screwdrivers meant to open the original and it isn't working on the newer one.
Hello Tronics! I have a question. I am working on my own ps4 controller but the battery is slightly to thick for the controller. Can in just place the battery on the motherboard without the battery holder inside the controller? Would that damage it?
Does the thumbstick from new controller fit to old controller and work? I mean can we "upgrade" when they fail?
I have got a ps4 platinum headset. When I join my friends in party they hear some noise from my mic bzzz can you help me to fix. Thx 🌹
Hi Steve, i have a weird problem on my switch oled, when is cold make a weird noise when i press around cartdrige area, you can see a video on my page, can you tell me your opinion ? When i play and get hot it quit crackling....so weird
Is there any way you could make some tutorials for different problems that one might encounter when repairing a switch? If not l, could you recommend some existing ones?
Hi, The video output of my Nintendo Switch is not working in dock mode. The charging light works normally, and the cables are properly connected. I also tested the switch on another dock and another TV, but had the same result. From the tests this should be related to some hardware problem. Do you have any idea which piece could be? Ps: It works normally in handheld mode. The defect only occurs in the video output.
I don’t know anything about tech but your vids are so fun to watch
Thanks! Glad you're enjoying them!
Hi Steve, I was wondering how different is the switch lite video chip compared to the video chip on the std switch? Does this chip govern video out from the USB-C port and if so can you solder a video chip from a std switch onto a switch lite and make video out possible?
This might be a dumb question but i just watched your vid on the xbox one s from amazon but whag does thermal paste even do?
My issue was the console wood cut off after 5 min would I would try to display it on my 4k lg c6. So I sold it. I wonder if this will work?
Do you repair power supply for ps4 pro or should i try to send it to sony?need help just stopped working please.
I feel like having you fix an old one would be more reliable than buying a new one.
I cant find a solution anywhere so maybe you could help me out.
So basically my ps4 slim (CUH - 2006A model) is not feeding disc properly this time it got worse. It will feed once and will come out and then it will not feed anymore, my ps4 thinks that there is another disc in there even though its not, this happen often now. Manual eject screw doesnt help it just turns, it never got tighten it just spin around. I havent opened the ps4 yet to the point where i removed screws.
Thanks for checking this stuff for us :) Maybe if you could see if they have the same screen ?
One of the carbon contacts on the joystick was slightly smaller on one of them, maybe that would help with the drifting?
Did you check the RAM chips? Some say they might been impproved too.
Cool to see difference. Thanks
Hey mate, I'm just curious how you learnt all of this sort of stuff, Im really interested in fixing tech I just how no idea where to start. I have a basic knowledge of wiring (I have fixed several guitars) Just wondering where to start in regard to fixing this sort of tech, Cheers mate
Is there any change in the charge dock for the new switch? Also, the latches in the joycons, are they the same as the earlier version?
Looks like the inductor coil is a different model, probably the same inductance but a version less likely to fail?
Really cool video. Do more console comparison videos
Thanks!
Hi Steve I have a ps4 pro it's in a vertical stand with the 2 fans in does this affect the ps4 in the chip set as it gets hot as they can get the light of death laying flat is it worse standing up regards mark
Is there a part number to check for the video chip to see if they put an updated version of it? (since it looks like it was a common point of failure)
At 5:11 . You missed those two additional chips on the new one (on the left, they're four, on the old right they're two; just beside that little chip under the big one) _&_ you didn't see (maybe it's unimportant) that on the older one, on the right corner with the screw hole, there are some yellow bits, whereas on the new one they're absent.
THANK YOU so much for this video, this is exactly what i needed! I've been looking forward to get my hands on a "new" Switch, and i'm also excited to teardown the Switch Lite when it releases.
Do you think it's possible to swap the old switch mother board with the new one?
Hey @tronicsFix, my girlfriend just purchased a switch. How to know what is the version of the console whitout disassemble it ? Thanks in advance !
Dude, I love your videos. Keep it up!
Thanks! I plan on it.
I bought that screwdriver it is amazing THANK YOU!!
I love that thing! I bought another for my YT studio
if i sent you my scratched screen and new screen, can you fix it :(
Great videos! Not sure if mentioned, but Switch Lite fixing until broken?
Hey Steve, Arctic silver 5 or mx-4 for a r5 3600 build?
Are the new style joy-cons for sale outside of the new switch package? and is there an easy way to tell the difference from just the packaging if you want to buy a new set?
Are the contacts for the joy cons on the console the same? Since they were very delicate and easily damage, joy cons starts to lose connectivity
They seem to be pretty similar.
Noticed in other videos that a bunch have different fans with three indentations on the side with the blades.
Main MB differences I noticed which you didn't comment on where a slight reconfiguration of the three chips above the USB port, the removal of a chip above the coil, and a large cluster of chips removed just below the flash storage
I'm curious, is it possible to switch out the new screen with the old screen and still get the brightness gains on the new model?
Brilliant video. Thanks for making this.
My pleasure...thanks for watching!
there seems to be a group of resistor missing just bellow the speaker and there seems to be some numbers that are different on the speaker I can't tell what they are/mean
When u going to get more ps4s or Xbox one xs and Nintendo switches for sale? Im looking to buy one in the 26th
One thing I never hear you mention. I change a lot of those analog sticks out between my wife and my son's Nintendo switches. The back plate I guess is what you would call it on the analog stick and they bend outwards. If you have a heavy thumb it bends it outwards it's not just dust. I see on the center of the back plate on the new one they put ridges on it I guess for reinforcement. they should be using a different type of steel that's harder hopefully they change that too
I have a problem with my ps4 I need help with. A few days ago my ps4 slim started acting messed up. Whenever I play a game it freezes a lot and the sound is most of the time delayed or some sounds just don't work like voice dialog. My ps4 home screen also freezes quite frequently now. I Have already tried the safe mode things and I even initialized my ps4 and the problem still remains. If anyone can help please reply to this. I haven't been able to game in 3 days and I can't afford a whole nother ps4
I really only watch because I find this calming for some reason, but I do have a question, does the smaller chip for lower power consumption mean that the console won’t be as smooth? Does that make sense like can you over power it when a game has a lot going on on the screen. I’ve noticed that on some old computer games I use to play when a boss battle and character movement would cause lag.
Dude i saw that screwdriver and automatically had to get it lol
The area in the top right of the back of the motherboard was quite a bit more streamlined, looks like they eliminated quite a few chips from there
The contacts inside the Joy-con joystick are definitely a slightly different shape, larger, and the white plastic pads the contacts are on are a rounded shape instead of square. That should help with drifting, as it would have more surface area to contact with and the rounded shape should help it glide smoother.
so if you were to start using the new chip model in old Switches would it have any effect on battery life? or would it not work because the Circuity is set up differently?
I wish they updated the fan to a more powerful one. The old one do get loud when in handheld mode
you look like youve played wowclassic the last 7 days :D
Pretty big change between the right side ZIF connector and heat sink screw.
Can you just this screwdriver for a teardown on PS4 pro?
The battery cable on the joycons are on different sides or the print is on a different side ;)
What if you change the storage from old to the new one? Will it have the same data?
Ok
Can I use a v1 lcd whit a v2 motherboard
What game card slot should I use ?
V1 game card or v2 game card?
interested in why you're using 2 mics? Just in case one isn't recording? definitely feel you if that's the case
