This is legitimately some of the best drumming I've ever heard in my life. Lenny is so underrated. Man could burn with the best of 'em. No wonder Chick picked him
I read once that he was very influenced by and tried to play like Tony Williams so he has a great mentor. I agree, Lenny is very underrated. He’s great!
Everybody likes to talk about Jaco Pastorius for a good reason, but damn. Stanley Clarke is tearing it up. I can't tell which one is better. They are two of the greatest modern jazz bassists of all time.
I was fortunate enough to see these guys back in 1975. It was Halloween night as I recall. Roy Buchanan was the opening act. I was just in high school, 12 grade. I was impressed to say the least.
Some of the music comes from Where Have I Known You Before and some from No Mystery. “Where” is one of my absolute favorites and my favorite of the 4 electric quartet RTF albums. “No Mystery” is also an incredible album and is very underrated as part of that four album run (Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy, Where…, No Mystery and Romantic Warrior). Space Circus is from “Hymn…”. So this was before Romantic Warrior, their blockbuster album.
Absolutely. I remember standing on stage right behind Lenny White and the band was panned left to right across the P.A. and when they started that trading Chick then Stanley then Al the sound came at me like a freight train faster and faster as they got down to two beats each. An unforgettable moment for me.
This contains one of the only full live versions that I've been able to find (not that I'm looking super hard) of Beyond the Seventh Galaxy, and it's so sick. Amazing show overall too.
I witnesses the same set in Stockholm but can't remember what year it was. But without competion the best and most surprising concert I visited, and to a joy that I couldn't imagine existed on this earth. I always thought humanity stretched over a collective, sometimes could create great things, but usually diversified and over time - if we stay patient and devote many a days to experience it, sampling them to one moment. But seldom in same moment. This is miraculous. Thanks so much for capturing this moment and let it for the Gold Medal to the best of what humanity did. Please let it Return to Forever?
I remember back in the day when NPR still had some integrity, that little riff from Celebration Suite at 1:42:00 was used as background music between segments.
From Miles Davis on the Corner Botches Brew to Return to Forver Weather Report to Mahavishnu Orchestra Tony Williams Lifetime To Head Hunters to Billy Cobham to Jeff Beck and the Great Prog Rock Bands Music took Fligjt in the 70sand this Great Band top of the list

at that time, in the seventies of the last century, no one in the world played jazz rock like this. Chick Coria and Stanley Clarke conquered a new space in jazz with their experiment in "Return to Forever" and enabled other musicians to go into the new and unknown. "electric" jazz was a big challenge back then...
Chick puts the R in guitar, his own name uses an R, an R in Before, but start is staht. I'm from E.MA so I can say that. Love the bass sound here, much too loud, but a Stanley tutorial.
I was one of a fortunate handful of people who sat in on the boys at the recording studio. Took a few pictures. When the recording stopped and they were taking a break, Stanley sat at the keyboards, Chick (RIP ) picked up Al's guitar and Al was playing with Stanleys bass. Lenny was tapping away on the keyboard hardware with his sticks and anything that a drumstick would bounce on! A very versatile bunch.!
This is legitimately some of the best drumming I've ever heard in my life. Lenny is so underrated. Man could burn with the best of 'em. No wonder Chick picked him
Saw the trio in I believe 2014 and all 3 were incredible, Lenny was better than I had ever head him!
Best Jazz Fushion of all time
I read once that he was very influenced by and tried to play like Tony Williams so he has a great mentor. I agree, Lenny is very underrated. He’s great!
@@archivestereo….the drum solo outro in…Mating Drive…is 🔥
I was lucky enough to see Return to Forever with this line up in DC, 1983. DAR constitution hall, greatest concert of my life! Been a fan for so long!
Everybody likes to talk about Jaco Pastorius for a good reason, but damn. Stanley Clarke is tearing it up. I can't tell which one is better. They are two of the greatest modern jazz bassists of all time.
The most amazing concert I ever listened to ! ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎹🎸🥁
Funny sounds 😀 so great music ! Thanks to the Musicians
I was 20 years old when this was happening , this was it .
Still my favourite band of all time.
wow this is unbelievable can't believe that this recording existed many thanks for posting this gem

YT popped it into my suggested video list. Cheers
Great concert and specially Vulcan Worlds, the guys are on fire there. Brilliant solos.
Yes!
Not just Jazz Rock but some FUNK too!
Oh yeah! I've always been adamant that this lineup of RTF laid down some of the nastiest funk I've ever heard
That music makes me happy😊
Glad to hear that. Thanks for listening!
Amazing energy

God, this cooks so hard.
YesChick Corea is a happing was fortunate get into jazz as an 6yr old so when these guys came out it was no mystery.
I always loved that bit in Vulcan Worlds where Trading 4's becomes trading 3's, then 2's, then 1's then blblblebebebrub!!!
