After "bleaching" with citric acid that has been thickened with guar gum you have to neutralize it with a calcium carbonate (chalk) bath. 1/4 cup chalk in 10 liters of water using your fingers to massage the cloth then let soak for 5 minutes. This will also help to remove the guar gum. Should be done within a day or two after applying the citric acid so as not to damage the cloth. This will also remove the orange color you see in the logwood example.
Thank you for such nice ideas and how to. REally liked Kenya painted iron design cloth. It sounds like need a neutral soap/detergent to wash the fabrics in or just use water. Cabbage and Iris are also pH sensitive but not sure would last on clothing thru washings.
I have done other eco dyeing and once the dye is in the alum soaked fabric, how do you set the dye. Does it need a blanket with iron water? DO I need to set it by steaming ? Thank you. Great tutorial!
