Regular Car Reviews: 1991 Toyota MR2 SW20 Turbo

  • This is the most dangerous car ever made and it is also a perfect expression of The Human Condition. We want to know where "The Limit" lies and damn self-preservation. This is the most dangerous car, because it is cheap, accessible, and exists in great numbers. This is opposed to a Porsche 911SC which is more dangerous in a mechanical sense but is not as accessible as the MR2

    I very recently discovered my mother, who I lost at 12 years old over suicide and depression, owned a black 1992 MR2 turbo. My father told me how much she loved the car, and always wanted something sporty as she got older, but the day after the final payment was sent in, the MR2 was totaled in an accident by another driver when I was about 4 years old, so I never got to see the car. I'm 18 now, and for a long time I was never interested in cars, especially in middle school, being one of the quiet, edgy kids, seeing them as something for "The Jocks". I'm more mature now, and I've grown out of my edgy phase, and I'm a lot less of an introvert, and watching this channel, starting about 2 years back, brought me out of the idea that cars where just for meat heads, and have become a bit of a car enthusiast. Even after my mother has passed ever time I'm in the garage working on my regular car now, I can feel a bit of my mother in me, and relate a little more to the woman who kept so quiet, but will forever and always have a huge impact on my life. Thank you Mr. Regular, without you, I would have none of this.

And, assuming by our message, your dad is still here, he could help you make it closer to hers. You might even give him a bit of joy as well. So much respect.
      My sw20 was sold running amazing but with the sills rotting out and no replacement forthcoming. I saw some ideas using I think it was maestro skirts.

    2nd gen turbo scared the hell out of me. It went something like this. Carving country corners, in control, feeling great, maybe going a little too fast for up coming sweeper, yep too fast, stabs brakes, suddenly not in control of mister 2 at all anymore, feels like giant pin just went through middle of car, tail swings around, car now facing opposite direction, holy shit what just happened,, stabs brakes furiously, car stops unharmed, pulls off into someones driveway, get's out of car to shake off jeebies ..
    God i miss that car so much.

      So I’m 22yro, inherit some money and foolishly buy a ‘90 MR2 in 1992, got a great deal. The owner just wanted to get rid of it. I found out why a few weeks later. After I had my own experience with ‘snap-oversteer’. I’m going way to fast into the corner let off the throttle and SCREECH... I go spinning like a top across all 4 lanes of the road. 720 degrees later, in a cloud of burnt rubber the car stops, the dashboard is lit up like a Xmas tree and I’m jumping out of the car with a surge of adrenaline that has me shaking like a wet puppy.
      Oddly a couple days go by and the previous owner call me ‘just to see how I’m liking the car’... I find out it’s more like, I hope that kid didn’t kill him self and I should have mentioned that the car likes to go ass first at the apex.

    • @bladerunner1b
      @bladerunner1b 4 роки тому +1

      @@garthdyland.6258 Yes, the old snap-oversteer is exactly what i was describing without actually saying it - but i knew MR2 people would know exactly what i was talking about. ; )
      This is a car that demands a experienced driver if you want to push it hard. Even then it can be very unpredictable. Sort of like a mini version of the Carrera GT in that way i suppose.
      Still, great fun - just be careful with the damn thing.

      To me where thy messed up is the back, the way they mixed the rear "hardtop"looking window, the taillights, the rear bumper, the way the whole car looks at the back ruins the sporty front and the performance it may have had (I don´t really know the specs) I preffer a Spirit R/T when it comes to looks

    The bottle example is a little more accurate if you view the car body/frame as the water and the wheels/brakes as the glass jar. The jar wants to stop but the body/frame wants to keep moving. But since everything is bolted together the whole thing will move like the water, which is why the front suspension compresses under braking.

    • @tankninja1
      @tankninja1 7 років тому

      I don't know about that maybe it would help, but I would be willing to bet that better rear brakes, meaning larger diameter or higher pressure, would significantly improve handling if not fix the problem all together.
      Bigger brakes on the back or smaller brakes on the front would change the acceleration and instantaneous velocity about the center of gravity and since nobody really wants smaller brakes anywhere, put bigger ones on the back.

    • @nickma71
      @nickma71 7 років тому +2

      It has coil overs from the factory. Yes, that incorrect terminology matters. If you had stated after market shock and spring, like you did with "proper tires" that would have been correct.

  • @Pow3rus
    @Pow3rus 9 років тому +262

    I own one and yes the braking is always scary. You have to use both arms to keep the steering wheel straight when you brake hard because it's pulling towards right or left depending on which side of the road the car decided to die.
    Drive it casually with one hand at the bottom of the wheel and it's DEATH
    Oh my god I love my MR2

    Also, for those of you who really wanna know how to 'drive' drive the car, its a matter of progression. Its not like a rwd where you can just swing it out and recover, or a fwd that's plenty forgiving with under steer. You have to learn to trust the car to grab through turns without braking. Of course, you don't barrel through turns with WOT or jerk the steering wheel over. Everything is elegant, graceful movement. Brake before your turns to slow down, then feather your steering and throttle and be amazed at how the car responds to you. I do it regualrly, because the experience is simply intoxicating.

      I believe it's against the law for vehicle manufactures to design cars with pop up headlights now. I'm not sure why, but if think it messes with aerodynamics or some safety rule.

    • @maninredhelm
      @maninredhelm 9 років тому +11

      TheDudeWhoCommented Both, actually. They make already bad car vs. pedestrian odds even worse for the pedestrian, and are against the law in Europe, where there's a greater incidence of pedestrians being hit by cars. But they're also a poor design aerodynamically compared to just sculpting the headlamp into the shape like a C6, and add extra weight and complexity to motorize them. There's simply no upside to them whatsoever, except that they're so cool to raise and lower.

    the SW20 turbo is crack on wheels. after you sell it, you'll crave it again.

  • @andrewturner1937
    @andrewturner1937 7 років тому +86

    Probably one of my favorite cars of all time. My first one almost killed me (bought it when I was 19 years old, drove it for about 3 years without any problem! Then one day, understeer followed by snap oversteer with the transition from pavement to grass at around 65mph slamming into a thicket of young trees. Had to pop off the T-top to get out of the car).
    Second one was an utter beast. 315whp, stripped down a bit so it weighed ~2600lbs. It was scary fast when that turbo was fully spooled around 4500. I was still young, dumb, full of cum and came in too hot around a corner and again, understeer! Nailed the curb, hobbled it home, insurance declared it totaled but I bought it back and sold it to somebody within the MR2 community who could treat it better than I could.
    Bought an E36 M3 afterwards which is far more forgiving and also a fantastic car (to drive, and also if you're a maintenance masochist [which I'm not unfortunately]), but man.... that itch to get another MR2 never goes away...

    • @lucywucyyy
      @lucywucyyy 7 років тому +3

      do you know what rev those cars were? were they pre 1993?
      im also 19 and looking to buy one and possibly submit to natural selection but the more i hear people talk about the snap over steer the less im convinced its a driver error. back then were you aware of how to properly drive a back heavy car aswell?

    • @andrewturner1937
      @andrewturner1937 7 років тому +6

      It's entirely driver error unless you've done something wonky with your suspension setup. Anybody who says that their accident was the fault of the vehicle is just trying to shift the blame to preserve their pride.
      Honestly, both of the accidents I had in mine I would have had in any other car. I was just going too fast for the turn and it wouldn't have mattered what layout or drive wheels the car had, something bad was inevitable.
      I daily drove those MR2s for about 5 years and snap-oversteer was never an issue and I drove them quite spiritedly.
      It's an incredibly capable car even in it's stock form but as long as you're not a cock it's not going to kill you. I think the problem people have with it is that, for it's cost, it allows you to put yourself into a situation in which you're likely to fuck up much more-so than anything else in the same price range.
      It ain't out to kill you, but it also damn well ain't gonna stop you from trying.

    • @andrewturner1937
      @andrewturner1937 7 років тому +12

      And dude, you're 19. Now is the time to do shit like drive a completely impractical mid-engine 2-seater. When you're coming on 30 you don't want to look back at think "well, I made the practical decision and got a used Accord and it was alright, never had any problems."
      You want to look back and think "holy shit, that didn't really make any sense but goddamn it was fun!"
      And that's what the MR2 is.

    • @lucywucyyy
      @lucywucyyy 7 років тому

      The Mitsubishi Pajero is called the Pendejo in Mexico because of the spelling (and the vast numbers of dickheads who drive them).
      Also MR layout cars suck in snow, and France gets quite a lot of snow in winter, hence why France pioneered FWD cars (I love my 206 GTi).

      Actually, someone working for Toyota in France (my guess at least) realized it would sound like "est merde", and they changed the name to "MR" (2nd gen), and "MR-S" (3rd gen). They had a lot of time to come up with those brilliantly innovative names, since they skipped the first gen entirely, never available to the French. Guess they still didn't sell that well in France after all. Source: fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_MR

    The infamous "INSTA DEATH SNAP OVERSTEER OMG AHHH" can be easily prevented by driving smooth, and corrected for by paying attention and knowing to NOT TURN TOO MUCH WHEN COUNTERSTEERING! that is the main problem, idiots who have no idea what it is capable of buy it, think it will act like a normal safe "hold me pls" car like a civic. they go alittle over the tires limit then BAM they get struck with instant fear "WTF DO I DO OMG" so they WHIP the wheel to the outside and BAM flips back around when the car finds grip and SLAMS into the wall back corner first.

The build quality was excellent, everything in the interior felt solid in a way that's rare in new cars these days. My first car was a 1987 Fiero GT. I wouldnt let any of my friends drive it because of the very difference you were describing, braking late into a corner would be disastrous. Brake early, gas out early, thats the formula for RWD Mid-rear engine, but front engine fwd teaches the opposite habits to new drivers that can hurt them if they drive something new.

      Sort of, but that doesn't explain why American and German sports cars are still fun. RCR's Celica GTS video actually explains it perfectly. The Japanese car makers really didn't know what we wanted as far as sports cars in the early and mid 2000s and most people went American or German. Japan lost big on this and has since moved to a much safer business model selling us family cars like Accords and Camrys because they knew that we'd still buy those cars over the American counterparts.

      I own one as well, the transmission is completely behind the driver. I felt the heat of the transmission driving my friend's Miata, but never in any of my MR2s.

    Still have my '91 Black SW20 T-bar. Every time I take it out, you get smiled and waved at. People, namely the now early 30's, love seeing these cars. Reminds us of grammar school and easier times.

    This was thoroughly entertaining, you also sound like Adam Scott from parks and rec. which is a plus in my book.

    I hope you'll eventually review the 3rd gen MR2 / Spyder. I know it's not quite as "hardcore" as the old MR2, but they're now really affordable cars.

      I hope so too. Yes, not as "hardcore" / performer as the MK2. Each gen had their own purposes. The MR-S in particular was going after the Miata.

      Roads Untraveled That's what I like to hear from people until they find out that I swapped it.
      I enjoy all 3 versions, I stuck with the MK3 since everyone hates it while I don't. Eventually I'll get a good near stock condition 94 / 95 MK 2.

      jaypinoy83 good luck, they only made like 90 mr2 turbos in 95. They are a collector's item because that's when the car was "perfected". 91 & 92 are the more raw versions.

      Blaine Chappell If you're talking about the US market only, then yes, there's only about 90 of them. But I live in Canada and we import cars a lot. They made 5,000 MR2's in 1994. Not that hard to find haha. I've got a bone stock and all original 94 GT-S.
