fun fact: the whole "being summoned by a cute girl" thing is a direct reference to "The Familiar of Zero", a rom-com light novel series / anime that directly influenced a lot of isekai that came after it. the author of Re:Zero even started as a Familiar of Zero fan fiction writer.

That’s fucking comical. This is one of my favorite shows. Familiar of Zero is the only one I’ve ever dropped.
Also it’s more just a general reference to Isekai, it happens in a lot of them.

Re:Zero came at a weird point of proliferation of isekai-as-a-genre. It released well into anime's exploration of being "transported to another world", so by this point, a lot of stuff had already been done. Plenty of shows had explored the excitement and discovery of a new place, and others had already explored the unease and longing for home that comes with being stuck in an difficult or unfamiliar place.
By this point, we had entered the ironic stage - everything had to be isekai for mass market appeal since it was proven to work, but most who would watch it had seen all these previous works and didn't need a rehash of "Oh no, where am I?!". So, instead, they would take the tropes of the genre (summoning, a cute girl companion, sudden strength or powers, etc) and poke fun at them and skip quickly over the actual isekai part. Re:Zero is firmly here.
The genre later even got a reputation for being so brief about it that most isekai could have just as easily not been isekai at all. It's almost caused a small resurgence in how common more in-depth ones are.

Ah great series, the first season has great highs and a some slower points - second season builds throughout.
Quick note: "The jealous witch" is actually called "the witch of envy" going forwards, just an oddity of this first episode.

One of the best psychological horror shows. Can't wait for season 3.
I love rewatching this opening episode and seeing Puck's shocked face when our heroine drops the name Satella like it's nothing.

This is one of my favorite shows because of the massive world builiding and characters. I would only advise you not to overthink things and know that the characters have flaws and arent perfect. I myself love when the main characters have big flaws. Hope you enjoy it!

Something to keep in mind when watching this is Subaru is more or less an average person and his rebirths bring him back to a certain point in time but they do not erase the pain or memories. So many people treat his ability like it's just a do over switch and display a severe lack of empathy for the physical and psychological pain he endures so I often employ this question, just how many times do you think you can be brutally murdered and brought back with clear memories of pain enough to kill you and remain sane?
