I afforded a 2 month trip to Japan and Thailand with your tips from previous videos. I quoted you on our trips to my boyfriend like a million times haha. You taught me things I would have never thought of on my own. You rock Nadine!
sandy k sure I could assist you a bit! What kind of tips are you looking for? As far as general tips, I'd say Airbnb in Japan was a life saver, it's super important to book a place close to the railway system and the trains, most hotels within walking distance of these places are very expensive so Airbnb was a life saver. We ended up paying like $60 usd a night to be right in the middle of Tokyo, it was amazing. We didn't stay there long though opting to go to Kyoto for the countryside and we found accommodation there for about $27 usd nightly which is how we got away with staying so long. The bus system is your friend in Japan (though not so much in Tokyo) and you can get anywhere in Kyoto for $2.30 or $5 daily for unlimited rides anywhere the bus will take you in Kyoto! That means you can see multiple shrines and attractions in one day without spending more than $5 usd daily. It's really unbelievable what you get in the public transit. As far as buying airfare we bought our tickets in the USA leaving from Detroit MI November 4th and they were $555 a person ROUND TRIP. The best time to look to buy is September, but to purchase for November. So 2 months in advance. I hope I helped! Feel free to ask me anything else though if you're interested!
Luna King thank you so much ! Do you have any recommendations for places I should definetly visit? + I barely speak Japanese, can I get around there by speaking English only ?
sandy k there are a lot of people who speak English in Japan, and it shouldn't be a problem for you at all! My boyfriend never had a problem with anything and there are tons of English signs. As far as Tokyo goes, I really love the asakusa area, it's historic with tons of shrines and shopping. It's beautiful too. And of course there's Shinjuku, the entertainment is over the top. Google Shinjuku robot restaurant and you'll see what I mean lol. And as far as Kyoto goes my favorite shrine was fushimi inari. It's in my opinion the most beautiful shrine in Japan that I've seen. Arashiyama is also beautiful, and the classic visit to kinkakuji and Ginkaku-ji is also a must.
free walking tours are a MUST DO! 😄 In my travels I do almost all free things except for the must do things in the cities. Also cooking in hostels saves you sooooo much money! I hardly ever eat out when im travelling!
I love your videos! I've been binge watching almost all of them to help me prepare for my first solo trip! I'm leaving for Nova Scotia two weeks from today and I'm so excited! I'm a pretty anxious traveler (on planes) so your videos are helping me put my mind at ease. keep on keeping on, girl! you're amazing!
5:49 to 5:51, what was that, Nadine? Laughing Out Loud in here haha :D These videos of yours are great, and I tell you: You're helping lots of people, more than you think. Thanks!
I've recently discovered your channel (and binge watched almost all of your travel videos) and I absolutely love it! I've always loved to travel, but you are motivating me to try and save more money and just go out and see the world.
Nadine, you are AWESOME. I'm so glad you did this video! I already live by most of the advice you share here and in your first video, but I have ZERO video skills and you are sharing it with the world and that is super appreciated! Every single point you made is helpful.
Something I learned a long time ago. If you are in a place with lots of restaurants catering for tourists, they can be quite expensive. However every area has local workers who can't afford those prices, and often you can find restaurants tucked away up alleys where those locals eat and the prices are far lower.
Pro tip: bring a pillowcase from home if you're staying in a hostel/airbnb. You can put it over your pillow if it's kinda dirty or use it as a dirty laundry bag.
China's bullet train system is super cheap too! One way from Shanghai to Beijing is about $100CAD for a 5 hour trip, and when I went to Suzhou from Shanghai it was a $5 30 minute trip (regularly 4 hours by car). China in general is suuuuper cheap and there's so many amazing sights to see - I was just there for a month and I definitely recommend it! Pretty nice hotels run for $30-$60 a night too, so you can get the cheap motels for even cheaper and hostels for $6 a night.
All of your videos are amazing! I love museums so I went to the MoMA and MET in NYC this year. I want to go to the Louvre in Paris next year, and these videos are giving me so much hope to make that happen. Thank you!
When I went to Italy for a class trip, I did not have an exact budget in mind, that I spent a lot of money on shopping My mom got mad because It was her money. But I did learn from that experience.
Curency exchange are not to be avoided in europe many of them offer better exchange rates than the bank ... but check the exchange rate and ask before exchanging if any hidden fees are involved etc etc
I always end up spending a lot on accommodation as I can't share rooms as I need pure pitch dark silence to sleep, so always end up paying the extra for hotels. I do try to save where possible by going for cheaper 3 star hotels that include breakfast. I am from the UK so th pound stretches pretty well, really recommend travel top cards in countries like Japan, Dublin, and using an Oyster in London
You gave me quite a lot of great ideas in this one. I love your Travel Sources page. Super valuable!!!! Thank you for that. Also, under Transportation in your Resource page, you might want to add Lyft. They are growing pretty fast and I think they are better than Uber.
Need more tips! :D unfortunately my travelling always costs me more that I expect. But since minimizing my needs and posessions I've been able to see that there is always a cheaper way to do anything 😊
Also transportation may be more expensive in some countries than others, for example to me it's really expensive to move around Dallas or Houston in Uber while in Tokyo and more cities from Japan it's very cheap using the JR pass and the subway :)
Love your channel! Your travel tips have been so helpful when planning our big trip this fall to Japan and Ireland. Especially your backpack videos 🙌 Thank you so much. Happy travels!
Your videos are helping me SO much. I'm 21 and have never been overseas before and am going to the US in 22 days. I live in Australia, so it's a 14 hour flight and I am VERY anxious. I'm anxious about being away for 6 weeks and having to be on a plane for so long. Your videos are really helping me to feel prepared and relaxed and calm about the trip, so thank you, sincerely :)
I'm doing a contiki starting in New Orleans and going through the southern eastern states all the way up to New York. And then doing NY, Vegas, LA, Disneyland, San Fran, Seattle and then a bit of Canada. It'll be really fun - just gotta get over the nerves haha!
Yes - I used to have all of this covered but now (thank you EU) we're back to square one. Luckily, if you look around and especially off the beaten path there are good tickets and good places to book. Well, at least in Asia - otherwise i dunno.
I found using your excel spreadsheets made me spend as little as possible I have no bills and earn a decent amount so I should be able to save over half my pay easily but tend to enjoy my money a bit too much I save max $200 a week but could defintely do better and you've helped in a different way I already did know all of it but being forced to record it and visualise it makes it a lot scarier to spend my money
I disagree with cooking your own food. We travel to experience the culture and a lot of that has to do with the food, the flavours etc. Save up for food. Even if u just eating once a day from a food market or something
Really great video, Nadine! Do you have advice for someone who doesnt' drink alcohol but still wants to join friends in night outs when travelling or when you meet some people on your trip and someone suggests drinks? I can't count the times I got weird looks when I said I don't drink and I didn't feel welcome to still join te group.
Hey, just order a mocktail! ;) You don't need to tell them you don't drink right off the bat, just accept the invitation and then order your favorite juice or virgin cocktail.
Not sure where you're from but the exchange rate of euros lies very close to the US dollar. The less touristic countries like Czech, Hungary, Bulgaria, Slovakia etc. are pretty cheap. However, France, Belgium, Germany and especially the Scandinavian countries and Switzerland will cost you a lot more.
I;m an European from Easter Europe (so not rich) i travel and seen europe almost all of it for like 30-40 euros/day budget in Europe there are low cost airlines like RyanAir (my fav) or EassyJet + busses are cheap services like getbybus help a ton hostels are literaly evrywhere and quite cheap exept like peak season and popular destinations like Paris/Switzerlan/Norway/Danmark etc so 50 dolars/day is planty for a ok vacation i;ve met americans like being on a budget for 200 dolars/day that's pure stupidity ...
Nadine you inspire me to travel and make videos!! I just went to South Africa for two weeks and made a video on it!! I would love if you checked it out and gave some feedback! Thanks for inspiring me!!
17:25 minutes is too long even if I really need the advise... It would be better with 3 á 5 minutes videos. Part one could be the travel. Part two could be how to find cheap places to stay and so on. I am one of the people who watched the video you deleted not so long ago. And I love you but you got to keep the videos a lot shorter. It's just too much even if it's really good stuff you are saying. You still get a thumbs up
thanks, I just figured ppl might enjoy a one stop shop, it's a lot of info yes, but it's a video you can come back to over time and re-watch when you are planning etc. thanks for your advice, I can try and make a bit shorter, around 10min or so?
If you are pressed for time go to the settings button at the bottom of the video, it looks like a gear, and select 1.5 speed. Nadine will talk faster and still look just as nice.

Thank you for all of the time and information you put into these videos, you can literally see the sun set behind you! ❤️
Great tips!! We travel quite a bit with our children and use a lot of the tips you mentioned. Travel hacking can really help keep costs down.

Amazing video! Thank you so much for your tips :)
Curency exchange are not to be avoided in europe many of them offer better exchange rates than the bank ... but check the exchange rate and ask before exchanging if any hidden fees are involved etc etc
i always plan a 200$ extra money for the 'unforeseen' expenses. you never know!

HI5 buddy, fantastic advice!
For long term travel would you recommend getting a bank card for the country you are in? Or just continue using your bank at home?
Great tips!

Hahahha xD I like u say norway is expensive at the beginning, And i feel i could never go to usa becouse its so expensive there xD
So what is the dollar amount you personally save to travel Europe? Airfare, hotels and everything?
+Serena Kiefer depends on how long and when u go

Thank you 😊 for 1 month of backpacking For two people in Europe we are budgeting roughly 8,000. That's not to say things might change.
