The coming out thing? I think it is in reference to the characterization of Mulan in Once Upon A Time. Mulan is Gay in that retelling of the story.

It's very well known that Disney villains are gay coded, when you pay attention they are drawn and characterized with gay stereotypes.
When it comes to voice actors i don't think they really care about if the match the ethnicity of the character because they are only using there voice to portrayed them and even in motion caption they can use the body and voice but the final result it's up to the people that make the grafics and design.

My 2 bits: Movies like Mulan, Crouching Tiger HIdden Dragon, Slumdog Millionaire are hollywood movies that are made for the american or international audience and not the local audience. I love Mulan and Crouching Tiger but hate Slumdog Millionnaire.
Unfortunately the producers have to make money through their movies and they have the right to choose 'white' actors or non asian actors if they think that will help.
I'm a left liberal btw, i would love to see more ethnic , black, lgbtq, asian or other diverse characters.

People shouldn't care about race when casting voice actors but which one achieves the intended purpose, in the voice acting world is not that there is discrimination is more like the rest of Hollywood which is very small group of well connected "elitist", the problem isn't discrimination but more as it is "gatekeeping"
and who is doing the gatekeeping? white people.
I don't get it, if the character is black then cast a black person instead of a white person imitating a black guy, that's just weird 😅 it's the same if the character is asian, why you gotta imitate an asian guy instead of just getting an asian? 😅
@@gaspenpayne6755 If the character has an accent maybe, but otherwise....? You're just being obtuse. Hire the best person for the job plain and simple. Unless you're saying Blacks must sound a certain way, Asians must sound a certain way, etc etc; if that's the case them you might want to look inwards for a problem rather than outwardly.
Voice actors really should not matter, just the quality of the act.
There are countles POC playing white characters and vice versa and it should not matter because the ethnicity of the character itself is not changed based on the VA.
One of my fave examples is Kratos from GOW who is played and always has been by a black guy despite being pale being one of Kratos most defining chararistic.
Him being pale is a integral part of his character just like black panthers is being african but the VA is extremely good and has always played the character fantastically.

i think for voice acting you should care less of what an actor looks like(yeah, voice actors dont need to look like the character they are voicing), and more about them sounding the way you want the character to sound.
their skin tone and genitals should be irrelevant.
I love you guys and y'all's videos but I'll have to mention this, queercoding in villains is so so so so so damn common that people don't even catch the code anymore. The people who are, in fact, LGBT+ can easily pick on so much queer coding. and it's almost always the villains.
But in Mulan, i don't think the queercoding was in her character for even a villain, tbh. in the live action film, the male love interest was shown to be pretty interested in mulan before he even knew that she was a woman, so i think that's where the queer coding comes into the mulan plotline.
On the other hand, a lot of disney/pixar movies that have characters that have such a song sense of queerness that we just assume they're lgbt and run with it, thought it may technically be projection.
When it comes to western media, we can't deny how scriptwriters manage to throw in a stereotypical and highkey offensive portrayal of queer identities and actively get away with it.
(my opinion as a big Disney/Pixar/DreamWorks fan and an out lgbt person)

This honest trailer did not age well
This movie is all based on the me to movement not the actual book has they actually said it them self cause really they cut a lot of things off from the movie/books like the guy is not there to give her hopes and dreams and a reality check and the dragon is not even a dragon or talks funny is just a flying bird that just flies. So basically this is just another female empowerment brand to say Asian females can fight to even though we do have lot of famous female chinese fighters but most of them were in jackie chans film. But i actually liked the disney film it made me fall in love with her and have yellow fever.
