  • Views of the third Juno II flight that failed almost at liftoff, being destroyed by the range safety officer.
    Sequences from multiple cameras as shown side by side and isolated in real time. The audio was recreated based on actual Juno II launches. AI upscale (Topaz AI) was used to upscale the film sequences. While it works in most cases, some artifacts are present in some sequences.
    Sound and image cleanup, conversion to original frame rate, AI upscale and color restoration by RetroSpace HD.
    =======================================
    Juno II was an American space launch vehicle used during the late 1950s and early 1960s. It was derived from the Jupiter missile, which was used as the first stage.
    The attempted launch of an Explorer satellite on 16 July 1959 failed dramatically when the Juno II lost control almost immediately at liftoff, performing a cartwheel before the range safety officer sent the destruct command. The almost fully fueled booster crashed a few hundred feet from the pad, blockhouse crews watching in stunned surprise at the upper stage motors burning on the ground. The cause of the mishap was quickly traced to a short between two diodes in a power inverter, which cut off power to the guidance system at liftoff and caused the Juno's engine to gimbal to full stop, flipping the vehicle onto its side before Range Safety action was taken. To prevent a recurrence of this failure mode, improved coatings were used on the circuit boards in the booster.

    The guy who is saying oh shit must have been really surprised about the rocket exploding

      He sounds like he's laughing as he says it. You'd need a sense of humor in that situation...

      It's difficult to grasp what he meant out-ot-context - iirc he used the phrase as a motif to indicate the prevailing mood amongst the American public prior to their successes. That book is so good - I've read it about 5 times . Mailer's book I find less accessible albeit I need to read it again .

    Hmmm ... looks like in 1969 they already knew there would be damaged concrete underneath a launch mount. 😀

    It's odd that in certain angles it looks as though the rocket wasn't completely vertical on the pad.

    This would have inertial navigation ? Looks very similar to the failure of a Soyuz rocket in 2013 or about then

    I know it's probably just process and there's one guy who's job it is to call out "Stay in the blockhouse" when this sort of thing happens, but I feel like if you're stupid enough to go outside in this situation, with alarms sounding etc, you probably shouldn't be having anything to do with launching rockets in the first place.

    Juno was almost a big a piece of crap as Atlas. Which is not a surprise since they shared parts (the Juno engine was the same engine as the booster unit on the Atlas)

      A.I. wasn't used on Star Wars; CGI was. Why does this need to be explained to you?

      If you need to have the difference between "AI" and CGI explained, there is no hope for you. Keep following the warning labels on product packaging because you clearly need them.
