@@kimaboe A chess game shouldn't take 6+ hours, A top chess classical game should be over in 3 hours (4 hours max, this should be not happen often ,like a long endgame game Magnus type of game) so that means each player gets 1 hour with 30 seconds increment starting from move 1, + 15 minutes more after move 40. This gives each player around total 1 hour 45 minutes to play 60 moves by which point most games are close to over. There is no point to waste 2-3 hours with players stuck daydreaming the opening stage, there is nothing deep going on, all classical games are decided in time trouble, so all classical chess is a longer delay to the time trouble where the game gets good. Gukesh didn't lose because he got outplayed with some deep theory, the opening was even for both players, Ding just baited Gukesh into wasting all his time pointlessly calculating so then he doesn't have much time to calculate in the middle game and Ding gets the advantage as a result and Gukesh
Sometimes both players know the opening through move 20 and sometimes they’re both out of prep 10. This game was definitely more on the complex side most games are quite games where white is trying to find a small advantage. Every game varies I think reducing the time by any more will reduce the quality of play and that shouldn’t happen for a world championship match
@@tomatoisnotafruit5670 Magnus thinks chess should have shorter time controls because it is one potential route to make it more popular, but the issue he has with classical isn't with the time spent playing, but the time spent preparing for an outcome that is neither interesting or fun. He doesn't enjoy spending two months getting ready to play a match where his opponent is trying not to lose rather than win. One way to force the action is to make the games shorter, but from everything I've heard him say on the topic, he is fine with spending 2 hrs thinking over the board, as long as what he's looking at is interesting. That is why he wants freestyle/960 to become popular for the top players, because its *new*, not because it is *fast*.
I believe Ding thinks he is a lot weaker than he actually is. He probably saw a lot of those missed opportunities in earlier matches but was "no if even I can see that's a mistake my opponent would surely be able to see that as well" and basically talked himself out of taking these opportunities and even today you could see him struggling with his confidence but then something just snapped inside his head and he basically said "ah f*ck it" he just started trusting his intuition again which lead to this incredible victory. I really hope Ding gained some more confidence through this match
He is finding out that watching the players as a fan from outside while they struggling for 6 hours and then being asked stupid questions afterwards is way more enjoyable than being there as the player 😂😂
i love how magnus is acting right now as an ex champion who very clearly still is the best chess player in the world. feels like any other GM in his shoes will act condescending and arrogant about it, but him acting like a genuine fan and genuinely interested with this match is really amazing for me
Actually really enjoyed this recap. Surprised that it complements Levy's earlier recap so well. I can watch that after work, understand the game and how it developed and then I can watch this and recognise which points and moves both Magnus and Levy refer to (the key moments, the best and worst pieces etc). Look forward to the next one!
have to disagree, there is no "we/us" among people who aren't professionals and to minimize any top 2700 player who has reached 2800 and plays with others at that level can go back and forth while novices who are just fans of the game will try to make it a science when they can't comprehend the level even a little. (I myself am a 2800 online rated FM and have competed with Magnus and many in the top 10 in online blitz)
Because he is so happy he didn't have to spend months of time preparing and playing this event and can just enjoy good chess with the rest of us as a spectator. That's just my own speculation, obviously wouldn't know.
i love this format... magnus isn't the greatest public speaker, but give him as much time as he needs. his insight is, of course, fascinating. levy rocks it always. what a team.
Watching the livestream for this was fantastic - really great production from the Take Take Take team and Hammer was incredible on commentary as expected!
My biggest surprise was when the pawn reached a5, the game became a domineering feat by Ding. Every move put Gukesh in a defensive posture afterward, and he never was able to regain his attack.
Thanks. Great team and analysis. Carlsen's insight on early a5 assessing it gave Ding a solid plan and an advance pawn - I didn't understand it live. Carlsen has seen it all before - similar to Game 9 vs Anand where a roving night and b pawn just about provided enough counterplay in the face of a king side pawn advance.
Karpov said that if Kasparov hadn’t gotten the break and then gained his confidence the history might have been different. If Ding can keep this form and not let Gukesh gain confidence he could run away with it but I don’t think Ding will get that lucky. His best chance is getting to the tie break
I like this recap for those who want to hear Magnus’ commentary and this is the biggest event of the year so I get why they’re doing it but it feels a bit niche and unsustainable. Many hardcore fans are happy enough with Levy’s recap, they’ll probably be satisfied with that. I liked the chat about body language, best and worst piece so if it is easy enough to have this extra content but I’m sceptical about its future
Magnus recap is great because he has been there so he knows what the players are feeling, and he is also a super gm, heck he is above the level of Ding and Gukesh, so he can commentate and analyze and criticize each player without sounding hypocritical or just following engine talk, and Magnus is also pretty good commentator and explaining both the chess position itself and all the physological and mental parts of the game too.
Magnus é incrível demais! Ele não fala nada a esmo, concordo com tudo oque ele disse. É uma declaração muito sincera e racional, abordando todos os aspectos importantes que só uma mente brilhante como a dele consegue raciocinar!
I think what happened with ding’s preparation is he prepared multiple lines and was choosing how he wanted to play in his 20 minute think because he wasn’t feeling confident yet
yeah, he spent a lot of time because he said he was deciding to continue with the line he prepared or to go off to a new line and he chose the new line which turned out to be the right decision, pushing his a pawn and bringing in the queen there and the knight, like Magnus said those decisions led to him winning the game It's not like he was stumped on move 7, he was just making a committal decision and he took a lot of time, also I think he kinda baited Gukesh into being a bit too confident by taking more time there so that worked out too.
@ of course he isn’t stumped I don’t there’s any top player who is completely stumped on move 7 they just may not know which option to go for of course I have seen Gary Kasparov take 20 seconds on move in in a blitz game cus the dude knows way to much about chess
Gukesh got low on time so he played a few bad moves after like move 25. The reason he got low on time was mostly Kb2, which he admitted in the press conference that he didn't see coming. The knight on b2 is supported by the a3 pawn, a idea that Ding said he spent 40 minutes cooking up on the fly. What a sequence
You're missing the point. The idea of these "recaps" is to talk about the game, so if you haven't already watched the game, it doesn't make a lot of sense. Think about it more like a mini podcast kinda thing

It’s a different kind of recap, I think there’s room for both. One of the problems with a lot of chess content is how similar/repetitive/formulaic they are, so it’s nice that they are trying something different.
Amazing recap but I think you guys missed the opportunity to talk about Gukesh almost flagging before the first time control, which was wild to see as a spectator.

This is the 6th recap I am watching of this game lol
It's the only one where the person talking can and will actually beat both subjects lol.
