A Hollywood star revealing a diagnosis can have a major impact. It sheds light on the illness they’re suffering from and can reduce the stigma around it. That’s especially true when the reveal is connected to a household name like Alan Alda. Viewers grew to love him as Hawkeye on M*A*S*H, including the millions who tuned in to the record-breaking finale.
He continued to succeed in Hollywood after that and did what he loved. He shined in Broadway, film, and TV. He’s also made major contributions to science. Then, one day, his wife noticed that something wasn’t right. His arms wouldn’t swing with him when he walked. He also vividly acted out scenes from his dreams. The tremors came next, and he got a diagnosis of Parkinson’s.
His many friends have stepped in to speak on his behalf. Joy Behar and her husband go out to dinner with him and his wife on double dates often. They laugh and enjoy themselves, but it’s clear that he’s suffering. His M*A*S*H costars also offered support. Fortunately for him, his condition has enhanced his work instead of detracting from it. His tremors became a character detail in the film Marriage Story. He’s the kind of actor who would have pushed through and tried to work anyway.
Life hasn’t been easy and he’s had to make many changes. There are simple daily tasks he can no longer do for himself. What a positive guy, he seems like a real nice man, he doesn't come across as fake or someone with an inflated ego. Good on him for continuing with life and not letting Parkinson's win over, he's accepted it and isn't going to let that stop him. That's amazing positive energy. I know him best through MASH which is one of my favorite top shows. Hawkeye Pierce will always be my favorite character along with Col. Potter (Harry Morgan). I haven't gotten around to see other roles he has done besides "The Aviator" with Leonardo DeCaprio if I remember right, I liked his role in that movie. Thank you for your kind words. As I said, it would be such a pleasure to get to know the guy. I am a military vet as well like him, former Navy corpsman here. 2001 - 2009.

I watch 2 hours of Mash mon fri an hour Sunday I love all of the Mash Family members it’s nice just to be with all of the members. As well as back stage crew. I remember the beginning of Mash Partridge Family All in the Family. You have a lot of people grew up with all of you. Thank for all of your memories.

I love Allen Alda! I loved him in MASH! He had a comic reaction to stress related topics such as war. I saw him a few other shows and movies. My mom loved MASH! I used to watch it with her.

Very sad disease. My father died in December 2016 after 4+ very ruff years. I moved in with my parents to help as best I could in 2014 after my wifes passing in May of 2013.
