WRX TR and Subaru's Future

- For episode #127 of the Flatirons Syndicate Podcast, Tasso, Dylan, and Jon sit down to talk about the WRX TR that was just revealed.
For 2024, Subaru unveiled the new WRX TR that comes with Brembo 6-Piston/2-Pistons from the previous STI, Recaro Seats, and re-tuned suspensions. But where as the last WRX TR from 06-07 which was the least expensive WRX trim, this will now be the highest trim level for the WRX.
The current VB WRX is the best and most capable WRX that Subaru has ever made, and now with these changes to the brakes and interior, the WRX TR is even better.
But is it better enough to justify the cost?
If this WRX ends up close to $50,000, is it really good enough to justify the cost? And what does this tell us about the direction that Subaru is going in the future?
Thanks for watching and definitely let us know what you think in the comments below.

45k for a wrx it certainly should have the sti drive train (mechanical front, middle and rear diffs better case design and gears.).
Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. If the WRX costs as much as an STI, it does seem to make sense that it would have that drivetrain. I'm still holding out hope that Subaru will give us that option.

@Christosan88 The great thing is, you can just buy a better featured $35k wrx and call it a day. You don't need the brembo's unless it's a track vehicle. And lets be honest, if you want a track star then the wrx shouldn't even be on your radar.
its much more than a track cahr. The utility and price to performance of sti and wrx's are why I love Subaru's I dont give a hoot bout some flashy expensive car.@@steve8803
@@steve8803 its the super everday car
They should have called it WRX Limited. It’s not a sTi but it seems to fit more with a Limited line which is already a Subaru line that they use. If they used the Limited line they could have put a dash badge on with the production number.
The TR is exactly what I expected from a performance package on the VB WRX. I wouldn't be offended if Subaru just plopped the STI drivetrain on the TR and called it an STI though. The car has already proven to be super tunable with a capable chassis, but the STI 6-speed with LSDs would really cement it as a proper GR Corolla/Type R competitor.
It wouldn't be much effort on Subaru's part and if they HAD to increase power for sales pamphlets they could just increase the boost from the already low levels it's at with the factory tune. There must be some sort of emissions regulations or something at play for Subaru to not do this. It's just so bizarre considering how good the VB is.
Thanks for watching. Great points, and I agree that Subaru is now so close to producing a car that is what the STI could have been, they really should just do it.
This is what I am holding out hope comes out as the TS trim of the WRX.

I had expectations of the new TR being an updated version of the 06-07 TR. Stripped down, simple, and decent price point. I'm not really sure what this TR is supposed to be. The eyesight BS, other amenities, and price suggests that it's a "WRX premium plus" but in the premium market there are, well, more premium cars.
Honestly I have no idea what SOA is doing anymore, but i'm not really a fan.

Great video guys, can’t wait for the next one . I was curious to see what some experienced people thought about the Tr, not just tuner fanboys who hated it
Thanks very much!

I'll keep my old WRX for now. Like I have for a while. Hoping Subaru changes its course. And comes out with something worthy enough. For their loyal WRX platform customers.
Including an STI trans at least for the price of this package. Would've got me back in my local dealership.
It would be interesting to revisit this conversation since Subaru announced pricing at around $42k. It seems a reasonable ask given the rest of the 2024 pricing. Granted, it's still in stiff competition with other more "special" cars...
Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. Definitely a good ideal.

I'll pass on all that. Will keep 2006 Subaru sti till wheels fall off
There certainly is just something about the GD chassis for sure.
Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
Like they said at their boxerfest reveal, it's more of a track ready than previous tuner ready.
That is certainly the case.
Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
None of the parts on TR is track ready sadly
Really interesting discussion 👏
Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it. Stay Tuned!
The sti is probably too expensive to produce at this point. I wish they would just make it a parts department like yamaha gytr and have more factory bolt ons.
It does seem that this is what we are seeing to a reasonable degree. Still holding out hope that they put the STI 6-speed in the car soon.
Stay Tuned!
The TR might be a good choice for someone who wants Brembos and Recaros, which means less work and useless spare parts for the owner, but they could have made those part of a trim package without the flabby extras like eyesight and factory 19" wheels when there are better options aftermarket. This thing isn't tuner ready; more like Tuner Averse for folks who want bragging rights without having to do any research or handi-work.
Hearing these prices blows my mind, I got my 2019 STi for 38k with 1.9% apr
Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment.
Man, given the current market that sounds like the deal of the century!

Would make a lot of sense if they put it at the same price point as the GT, with one being the cruiser and one being track-ready, which seems to be more of what they are going for than tuner ready. Why would they do something that makes sense though
That does make a lot of sense for sure. I hope that they at least stay close to that price point.
Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
Our STI swapped VB is the (minus the price of the car) least expensive and most reliable 600 WHP car.
If they released and STI VB they couldn’t keep them in stock anywhere.
The potential in this chassis is so high, it just makes me wonder what the STI would have been like. I half wonder if the reason that we are getting the latest STI Brembo's is because Subaru had them in the works for the VB STI before it got shut down. Still really hoping that we get a trim with the STI 6-speed at some point.
Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
TR stands for TuRd. Get a GD. Don't forget to stock up on weatherstripping while Subaru still makes it.

14.5 minutes in and wondering if they’re going to discuss the eyesight system.
It is definitely interesting that the have found a way to add that to the MT cars, but it wasn't what was on our minds this time around.
Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
@@FlatironsTuning no worries, just pointing out that I feel this adds a decent portion of the additional cost. I was at Subiefest Florida and the SOA program manager stated that eyesight was a “must” or something like that… he didn’t clearly state why. Don’t know if it was for insurance or to give it more value, etc.
@@davidrobinson6495 That is interesting. I have seen some mention from Subaru that they want Eyesight on all vehicles in the future, and maybe that is related to why???
@@davidrobinson6495 I've read that some countries are requiring the safety technology be on all new cars sold from a certain date and this pushed Subaru to adapt it on the WRX as well.
Gd control arms. I'm with taso lol #gd4life

Big heavy dusty brembo, “special tuned” suspension instead of bilstein in any of special edition wrx/sti, heavy cast 19 inch wheels instead of BBS, powertrain still remain the same all of those with 45k price tag. Well done SOA just ruined subaru completely.
Thanks for watching and thanks for your comment.

some great points made
Then don’t buy this model if you don’t think it’s worth it, and just get a standard WRX.

"I'm a pro environment person," then use a coffee ☕️ for the show. Even if you prefer a disposable. Like Johnny Carson giving up smoking on his show but still smoked off camera
All they had to do, was release the brembo's as a package. Boom, they wouldve made hella money. They already have the data from the refresh of the VA. So.. what they just ignore a strong and easy well received metric? What are we missing here? They have to know that its nonsensical for owners to trade a whole car just for a brake package. So who does this attract? The Audi S3 crowd? Because an Audi S3 has nice interior, refined ride and is overall quicker. Though yes no 6speed, but at that price, a very Nice Six Speed, should be the case. So 45-48k huh. Plus another 1500-3kish for fees/taxes/warranty. No dude, just doesn't seem like a smart "sales" take. Because here's the thing. The Economy. Its Tanked right now. Horrible Apr rates.. the avg person is making like 40-46k. Shoot its the combined income families that are buying the Ascents! There are plenty of people that trade their new VB's in. There isnt a shortage on the market. You see GT's as well. So if you start seeing as many used TR's as GT's, to me that was a "Miss" for the whole venture. Because for the price, there are other nicer "amenity" cars that owners will opt for. They only needed to continue the Brembo package.
You guys, Subaru is trying to improve WRX sales. That's why they got rid of the STI. They weren't making enough money. The STI trans in a wrx is a pipe dream. It's too costly, and there is pretty much zero demand outside of the enthusiast world for an STI. The car enthusiast world is dying with the incoming of EVs. Soon the WRX will transition to hybrid or full electric. STI won't touch the WRX until they can electrify it. They've already made that statement.
Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment.

I test drove a limited '23 WRX and not totally impressed. It's no STI light. There's 2,633 new '23s on cargurus. Maybe they will go wat down, not a hot seller. Try buying a Civic SI at your dealership. Plastic looks worse in person. At least my Corolla plastic looks like metal. Maybe a used STI for low to mid 30s the better car.
No STI, no way they get my money plain and simple.
The guy in the SnapBack is kind of annoying like he thinks he knows the most
i see you're new here.
@@TDT0188oh no! Do I have a reputation for being a know it all?
Subaru's future is the same as all the others. Boring, heavy weight EV's and no more manuals.
I drive a fbo 2016 wrx. I have 2016 STi brembos.
I at least like that the TR comes with the 6 piston front and did i read that right... 2 piston rear?
Thats a lot of stopping power. And dust, but thats what makes a subaru a subaru.
Wheels are ass. But whatever.
Anyone thinking Subaru is gonna put the STI drivetrain in the wrx.... lol your dreaming. Subaru is impeccable at letting people down. Hype hype hype... then nothing.
Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. Putting the 340mm/328mm Brembos from the STI on this WRX is definitely a step in the right direction. Let's just hope that they follow through with the rest of the parts at some point.
