It actually was pretty great for the time, and really playable! That was early on from Don Mattrick.

lol it's funny how you started by saying wolfenstien and then after john said wolfenstein i guess you realised your mistake and shortened it to wolf 3d :D

Well, not quite :) Wolfenstein and Wolf3D are interchangeable in my mind, even though I grew up playing the original Castle Wolfenstein on my buddy's Apple II ;)

Imagine trying to be young John Romero in 2023. You go on Expo, enter someone's booth, turn off their game and play yours. - "What do you think you're doing!!!??? Security!!!! Securiiiityyyyy!!!"

@puermortem4565 there's a heuristic to finding what is the modern equivalent of this. look at what the really nerdy guys are doing where mainstream media isn't looking (or even cares to look). there's a trend in tech that by the time it's mainstream enough for stuff like "mah diversity" to be a thing, the wave of individualistic innovation has long passed in that area

*He does **_not_** have Hyperthymesia.* There’s _plenty_ of evidence against that claim. He’s got a good memory, but Hyperthymesia is _far_ more pronounced than a good memory & I think it’s off-putting that he’s claiming to have a condition that’s only been diagnosed to ~60 people in the world. It’s just a way he can attempt appeals to authority fallacies.

agree. any intense and formative experience especially in youth can mean being able to recall at kinds of seemingly trivial detail.

You need an abnormal amount of memory to build an engine from scratch, add improvements and then transform it into something else.
Even if you're a doctor, unless you're a quantum physicist, like John Carmack, you lack the knowledge to tell if Romero has it or no.
For instance, John Carmack has the Quantum Mechanics (see the Fast inverse square root, which is an approximation of a reflective surface fragment on light). John Romero has the ability to take that, and transform it into new engines. Quake had to implement it in order to enable light colliding in a room (see the weapon shots emitting dynamic lights), and that was not even standard during OpenGL.
      Rinse and repeat.
Why do you need to have Hyperthymesia? Because if you fail at providing the basis of a model, the coherent behavior of it you're based on, is lost. In this case, Doom over the Quake engine. Which since had to be written from scratch, but the underlying model had to be memorized regardless.
