Killer setup and car! So Im curious why you went Microsquirt? I'm currently tuning the 08 4200 swap I did in my Boneville and the stock E67 ECU with an LSA 6.2 Maf sensor I'm already at 12 lbs of boost with no issues. Not hating your decision just curious. I come from the LS world, and keeping the factory VVT and knock sensors (I need to run 91 octane and have very limited access to E85 here) was big for me. And I'm not a pro tuner, so having the stock GM tables was helpful.
I know this is an old video, but what was the motivation of putting this engine in that particular car? Just curious if you are still reading comments.
Does the 4.2 OE torque converter mate up with the TH400 utilizing the EM Tech torque converter adapter and bell housing adapter? Also, would a junk yard T400 work fine with a stock 4.2? Thanks again
I'm thinking of putting this engine in a 40s Oldsmobile because the engine bay is long, slender, and deep. But does the vortec require a computer? Or is that only if you turbocharge it? Or can you turbocharge it without a computer? Thanks in advance.
You could run it with a carburetor , and people have retrofitted distributors. I recommend running a computer for the ignition at the very least. The factory GM ones work decent.
I’m gonna keep this video in mind for whenever I get around to swapping my firebird. You really know your shit about these engines. Only thing I’d do differently is I plan on going with an ecumaster stand-alone just so that I don’t run into those issues you were having with the ecu not being able to support certain hardware EDIT: with regards to the intake manifold, how’d you go about making the one for the stude? I remember you posting about a 3D printed runner setup that would allow you to run a generic plenum setup, but never saw anything else regarding it
The h3 hummer comes with a rear sump pan im pretty sure it was a 4200 but it could have been a 5cyl i put a trans atcase and diff in the one i worked on it doesnt have the diff through the pan like the trailblazers
Not knowing much about Microsquirts or even Megasquirts have you looked into some of the other aftermarket ecu's such as a Holley, Hal-tech I know that some of them will allow much more IO's and programability. There are a lot of options. Right now, I recommend a Megasquirt Goldbox because they can control the VVT. There are a lot of other options out there too.
How is there not more aftermarket for this engine? Cams, oil pans, even a piggyback ECU to simplify everything. Anyone just did a turbo on the 5-cylinder?
@Nivlac57 I guess I was just comparing another high performance inline 6 (5.9L Cummins 360cu) to a high performance v-8 (6.6L Duramax 403cu). I know that the Cummins and Duramax are both diesel turbocharged engines I just found it interesting that if the right turbo is used that an engine lacking 2 cylinders and ~40cu that it could keep up or exceed a v-8 if its built right.

I know this is an old video, but what was the motivation of putting this engine in that particular car? Just curious if you are still reading comments.
It was cheap. My dad owned it. I wanted to show how easy a 4200 swap actually was and put it into a chassis that was identifiable (fox body).
@@Calvin-Nelson Ah ok, thanks for the reply
Does the 4.2 OE torque converter mate up with the TH400 utilizing the EM Tech torque converter adapter and bell housing adapter? Also, would a junk yard T400 work fine with a stock 4.2? Thanks again
No. The torque converter doesn't work. Depends on your power goals, but a stock Th400 will hold decent power.
@@Calvin-Nelson Where did you source your bell housing adapter? Did you make it so you can utilize the OE bell housing?
@@markanthonypetra made it. You can buy them from emtech motorsports.
@@Calvin-Nelson As far as doing a turbo install, I don't have your kind of experience....what about a 100 shot of nitrous with a good tranny....
@@Calvin-Nelson cool, thanks for getting back to me! It was your videos that gave me the idea to put a Vortec in it rather than just drop another 350.
Hey, what do you use to tune these? I have a supercharged one I’d love to get running. Thanks!!
I use standalones typically. For stock ECU tuning, I'd use HP tuners.
I remember you posting about a 3D printed runner setup that would allow you to run a generic plenum setup, but never saw anything else regarding it
Yeah... My mind started racing when I saw on Richard Holdener how easy to put a distributor and carb. on Atlas DOHC 6..
What’s the drawback of using an unlocked stock ecu over going to mega squirt
Megasquirt is far more tunable.
The h3 hummer comes with a rear sump pan im pretty sure it was a 4200 but it could have been a 5cyl i put a trans atcase and diff in the one i worked on it doesnt have the diff through the pan like the trailblazers
Nope. It had the 5 cylinder.
Not knowing much about Microsquirts or even Megasquirts have you looked into some of the other aftermarket ecu's such as a Holley, Hal-tech I know that some of them will allow much more IO's and programability. Would love to see what you could do with one of these if you could control every aspect of the tune
I have messed with Holley quite a bit. This car was built to be a budget car, so can't afford an ECU like either of those.
@@Calvin-Nelson yeah I understand some of us don't have MCM budgets lol. I know the Berra swap that inspired this is running a hal-tech so it would be cool to see a apples to apples comparison wouldn't it, again great work and I love what your doing. Your families work on this has been amazing,
Would this engine be a good swap for a 1 ton pickup truck that came stock with a 454 v8?
Hm. Depends what you're wanting to do with it?
It would be nice if hptuners could do a OS change on the factory ecu
Yeah. Not enough volume to make it viable for them, I think
The volume would be much greater if they just did it lol. Alot of people would use it I'm sure but I could be wrong
What injector can you put in 4.2
Do you have detentions of its current setup?
Nice build
How would I be able to get ahold of you if I had any questions? I'm looking to swap one into my 04 1500 silverado
You can send me an email at nivlac5700@gmail.com
I wanna drop one of these in my 66 C10.
How do I go about getting a aftermarket ECU just trying to get some power out of this
There are a lot of options. Right now, I recommend a Megasquirt Goldbox because they can control the VVT. There are a lot of other options out there too.
Thinking about doing a swap on a 03 tiburon gt
The frame is too weak
How is there not more aftermarket for this engine? Cams, oil pans, even a piggyback ECU to simplify everything. Anyone just did a turbo on the 5-cylinder?
It's been done. We're slowly getting the aftermarket to come around.
What did you do about the torque converter?
Drilled the flex plate to match the torque converter. Thenade spacers to fill the gap and make the appropriate converter spacing.
How much power have you consistently achieved out of a turbocharged Vortec 4200? I was thinking about building a street/strip car using this engine.
550whp without cams (we've made more, but this is a safe limit) 700whp with cams (we've made more, but this is a safe limit)
@Nivlac57 Thanks, just figured that it would reach around the same as a 4.8L LS 800HP-900HP top end more if pushed.
@@rifleman7313 You have 2 less rods to spread that load across.
@@rifleman7313 I was talking stock bottom end. The sky is the limit with built bottom end.
I really like Sleepers
Hey for the ls1 throttle body did you have to do any modifications for the install just wondering? Any info would help and much appreciated
@nivlac57
@@jerryvigil6717 no. Just had to make a flange that allowed it to be bolted on
@nivlac57 do you think it would be possible to be to get it bolted on to where it sits stock originally with just making a flange
@@jerryvigil6717 possibly. You may have to offset it slightly.
@Nivlac57 by how much do you think it has to be offset
What kind of k member do you have? Is it like a upr with ls mounts?
Unknown manufacturer. Bought second (fourth, fifth, sixth...) hand.
Engine/frame mounts are tied into the frame on this car, not the subframe. On the wagon the mounts are mounted to the subframe.
Looking to swap this in a Mercedes 190e for a unique street build no real reason just like unique builds
What transmissions will bolt up to it?
Lots of info here: sites.google.com/view/vortec4200wiki/home
Can I put 06 ignition coils in my 05 motor??
If you buy one of our kits, you can. Paccracing.com/store
Thank man I was thinking of v8 swapping my 05 trailblazer but after seeing your vids definitely gonna turbo the 4.2 first but as a stock 05 blazer would it improve my engines performance to switch to the 06 ignition coils
Someone need to do an all aluminum v12 based off this block and head.
@Allen Millyard ? are you listening? Ha, good idea shaadydog1
Pete Aardema maybe
How do you get that long timing chain to last? I've killed 2
Let it age for 175k miles and then throw a bunch of boost at it.
@@Calvin-Nelson gotcha🤘🇺🇸
@@Calvin-Nelson pahahahahaha now that is funny bro 😂
For those who like the Ford looks but chevy power.
I'm curious.... why not on a chevy classic?
Fairmonts are lighter.
Hood scoop? A nice hood cowl would have been cool.
Nah. I like flat hoods personally.
Where can I buy the rear oil sump pan?
Emtech Motorsports
Do y’all think it could be possible to be done in a third gen camaro?
Yes. Might need a hood scoop
