Thanks for posting this music by a composer with whom I was totally unfamiliar. I have a 2-CD set of Rameau on modern piano that I enjoy immensely, and I’ve heard Couperin a number of times. To my ear, Duphly compares favorably with the former and is actually better than the latter. Also, I have several recordings by Pieter-Jan Belder and think he’s one of the best harpsichordists in the world. What a combination of composer and performer!

In 1802, Beethoven's Moonlight sonata was still published as being a sonata for the harpsichord or pianoforte. I believe most, if not all Haydn's and Mozart's compositions for fortepiano, were also published as being for the harpsichord. There is a long overlapping period where the new pianoforte very gradually overtook and replaced the harpsichord into relative obscurity, until the harpsichord revival in the 20th century.
duphly's career fits neatly between bach and haydn. he died in the first year of the revolution. he is sometimes considered a composer of the galant era.

I admire Duphly's music and this interpretation does him credit. I did prefer the version by John Paul which regrettably has been taken out of UA-cam. In John Paul's interpretation I hear a decided build-up from the first onward that culminates at the end of the fourth. It shows discernibly to my ear how patiently and meticulously Duphly worked and reworked his initial leitmotif to the climax of the fourth book. Considering the supremacy of Couperin, any French harpsichord barque composers are in the shadow, which is a bit unfair. Duphly is one of them. Almost only one piece by him is kept alive: "the cuckoo"' .. Others are sometimes played by harpsichordists, but not so often.

You might be right. John Williams has never been shy about "lifting" bits n pieces for classical music for his own compos. After all they're copyrigh-free! Now go and listen to "Jaws" theme for a similar experience!

Jacques Duphly (1715-1789) is not listed in my (older) editions of Grove's or Baker's! I agree with Penguin Guide that his music is "rare but attractive."

One of my favourite composer who died in 1789 and the harpsichord followed him shortly after...
Sir Thomas Beecham notoriously likened the sound of the harpsichord to "two skeletons copulating on a tin roof in a thunderstorm".
