Kenneth Bowen and Phil Belbin preserved her in colour forever in their artwork. Dear old Ken has passed on some years ago, but I can't watch 3801 without thinking of his boyish grin when photographing her for a future piece of art. Many thanks to the big team for all the hard work and dedication - it was worth it!
Well done everyone! You all deserve An Order of Australia Award (at the very least) for your years of dedication & tenacity! You have restored (again) such an important part of our Transport history. It is such a powerful machine that so many Aussie builders, Engineers, Skilled Metal-Workers & Tradesmen will really appreciate this rebirth; to say nothing of the travelling public with long memories! I'll never forget following 3801 in my car alongside the tracks, up the Orara Valley Way between Coffs Harbour & Grafton. The kids were amazed to see the Green Giant powering away from us in that beautiful part of the country.
What a grand treat to witness the Jolly Green Giant, 3801 back and breathing again, wow!! A huge thanks must go out to THNSW along with all of the dedicated and hardworking people involved with her massive and latest restoration project. Fingers crossed that we might see her make a grand return & appearance at this years Transport Heritage event (in Sydney) in June.
You guys are doing a wonderful job here getting 3801 back up and running. :) that is without a doubt to say the least, 12 years worth the wait. Good to see Alan Gardner as well on this video. Top bloke. :) I do have two questions. the first is, Why is 3801's tender painted Black? I thought she was going to be green. the second I may not get an answer for, but it's worth a try., What date will she be transferred back to Thirlmere? Cheers,
The black on the tender is just a protective undercoat till they repaint her up in a less patchy green. As for the transfer date, I'd imagine it'd be in feb sometime.
Savyisjoshoarts 3801 will be returning to thirlmere on the 22nd of jan which is tomorrow this has literally brought tears to my eyes seeing such a wonderfull loco back up and running and it will also be painted at thirlmere since im pretty sure they have a paint booth or somthing like that that i was told
