Thank you for the walk-thru of this English curriculum. I always need to look through the books to see if it will work for us. This was very helpful. I'm 50 yrs old, and this seems like an extension of the old Dick and Jane style of books, yet with a Christian viewpoint and minimal to no color.
Thanks so much for sharing. We have used Rod & Staff from the beginning and have just started grade 6. Would you mind sharing what it was in 7 that wasn’t working, any insight would be really helpful, thanks so much
Can a child start at any point of the series and grasp on all the past informatiom from the series. Or one has to start from the beginning? I want to start my daughter who is starting grade 6 but is below grade level. She is comming from public school and is a little behind. What grade book would be good for her?
Writers in residence and writeshop are two I'm considering. But this looks good for basics. I'm thinking about doing rod and staff, then the 2nd writers in residence and both writeshop books.... I figured rod and staff for elementary, writers in residence for middle school and writeshop for high school 🤷 How did writers in residence work for you? Which book did you use?
Have you had any experience with My Fathers World? We started school early and my 6 year old is finishing their 1st grade program. I'm little nervous to dive into the 2nd grade program with them and I've thought about taking a year to switch it up. Just curious about the transition. Rod and Staff seems very practical and much more affordable. We do really like the Charlotte mason style of learning tho.
Thank you for the detailed video on this specific curriculum. We are highly considering this for my girls English. Would you recommend the spelling one?
Nelson Nest you're welcome! Yes, I'd recommend the R&S spelling, too. It's cheap, simple, and to the point. My oldest two kids are still using it (they're in 6th and 8th now). I'm trying the Spelling You See (different company) with my 7 and 5 yr. olds now, though....it combines writing, spelling, and phonics together in a unique way. They seem to really like it. I needed something different for their personalities. You can check it out at www.spellingyousee.com to see if you'd like that. But if you are just going for simple, easy, basic, and cheap....Rod 'n' Staff is just fine. 😊
Right now, the only subject I do with 2 kids at the same time out loud is Writers in Residence with my older two. But I use the same curriculum for all 4 kids...example: R&S for English and reading, Math U See for math, Apologia for science, etc. Does that answer your question at all, lol? (I'm on a sugar detox and my brain's fuzzy at the moment! 😜)
Thank-You for the thorough review. My daughter is going into 3rd next year and I’m Overwhelmed trying to piece together all the LA curriculum. Been looking at Rod & Staff for a while. We will continue with All About Reading and start All About Spelling, then literature with a charter school. We are a bit behind in our LA due to speech interventions. Really need to implement writing and grammar. Do you think Rod & Staff 3 is enough to cover this or should I add something else? Or maybe just look at another curriculum all together that maybe combines these 2 components? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, my head is spinning looking through all of this. At least I know from this video I no longer have Abeka on my list.
You're welcome! And yes, it can be overwhelming. 😉 I think the rod and stuff is very intense and particular and could cover grammar just fine. Since you're already doing reading and spelling, I think that Rod 'n' Staff English would fill in the gaps. Don't forget to be easy on yourself, mama! ❤️ Just by teaching your daughter at home, she's getting way more one-on-one than she would in public school!
It's written to the student. Depends on how the kid does in English, lol. I've had to be more hands on with a couple of my kids, but it's pretty basic and builds on itself.
For older kids do you have seperate writing? We do copywork and essays now but want to go through some lessons. Is there a gentle writing to go with this?
Hi, I am taking my kids out of public for 3rd grade and 5th grade. Do you think that these will be true to the grade or will they be too hard to start on their current grade level?
The Rod 'n' Staff English books are a little above grade level, since the authors are Mennonite and their school grades only go up to 10th grade! So they are very meaty. I'd start with 2nd and 4th grades.
I will have a 5th grade daughter in the fall. When does Rod and Staff introduce diagramming? I am trying to decide what level to put her in. Do you think this is advanced?
They have diagramming through all the books. 😉 And, yes, compared to public school, the English is advanced. You could always get used books to see if she'd be in 4th or 5th grade level if you can't look at someone's books in person. They are pretty cheap, too.
Rod & Staff is advanced compared to public school. It is very thorough, and there is plenty of review questions in the teacher’s manuals until the 9th & 10th grade books. I started using R&S for 3rd grade, and have used them all the way to their grade 9&10th book 2. My daughter is 16, and was able to take English 101 at our community college. So, she did learn enough to do college level work. You can go to Milestonebooks.com, and see the table of contents. You can also look at sample pages. You won’t be disappointed with Rod and Staff. Happy homeschooling!
Anna Garcia No!! It's for 2nd grade. Way too hard for kindergarten. For kindergarten, just focus on math (we use Math U See), learning to read (we use Happy Phonics and Bob Books), and learning to write (we use Spelling You See). Keep it simple and fun so that they will love to learn. 😊
Yep! 😊 All the videos I've done, we're still using it all except for the Spelling You See (we went back to Rod 'n' Staff) & Writers in Residence (my older kids still hate writing, lol).
@@HeatherHuerta oh...is that separate? I was looking at everything and I saw the readers first. I did order the language arts books and the extra spelling workbook but are the readers needed, too? We read a lot from the Bible for "reading time"
@@zionschoolofperformingarts5324 this video is for the English books, so I was confused, lol.😉 For English, you just need the textbook & instructions (teacher) book, plus the tests. Worksheets are optional.

No, I've never done My Father's World. I like picking different things for each subject, not packaged sets for the year. More freedom that way. 😊
Thank you for your review. I am looking for LA curriculum for next year.
You're welcome! :)

Hello. Just found your channel. Thank you for the review. Do you also use R&S math?
God bless

AnOldFashioned CountryLife thank you! 😊 No, we use Math U See for math. The Rod 'n' Staff math was too boring and too much seatwork.

Oh, goodness. I need to spell check my own comment! 🤦 That's what happens when I do speak to text! 😂
Thank so much. Is it written to the student or does it require a lot of teacher help? Is it open and go?
It's written to the student. Depends on how the kid does in English, lol. I've had to be more hands on with a couple of my kids, but it's pretty basic and builds on itself.
Did you keep your kids at grade level? I noticed Heart of Dakota recommends doing them 1-2 years behind.
Yes, I kept them at grade level except for when it was tough for specific kids. 😁 Then we took our time with it!
For older kids do you have seperate writing?
We do copywork and essays now but want to go through some lessons. Is there a gentle writing to go with this?
For my teens, we've tried Writers in Residence and now do Jump In. Both are pretty easy and ease the kids in.

Yes! It's on the Rod 'n' Staff website:
