Hey, I have a question. All the reviews I'm finding so far are how much the moms love it. I'm explicitly looking for content that the kids will enjoy and not be tedious for them. How well do the kids like it? Do they drag there feet to do it, or try to save it for last?
I think that depends on your child's learning style and if they struggle with language arts. It is a very traditional, so if your child likes a lot of activities or variation, this might not be the program for you.
Now this is what a flip through looks like! Love how detailed you were with it. Definitely might go with this one because I was worried how to teach writing! Thank you for the great review!
I noticed that BJU Press offers English, Spelling and Reading as separate subjects. For a struggling reader going into the 4th grade, would you recommend All About Reading and English from BJU as a possible combination? It seems like a lot of writing if I went all BJU, would love to get your feedback on what would work best. Thank you 😊
They’re for different subjects. AAR is a reading program and BJU Press English is a grammar and writing curriculum. If your child isn’t able to read yet, I wouldn’t begin a very stringent grammar and writing program until they are pretty fluent in reading. When my daughter was learning to read, we used First Language Lessons since it was so gentle.
@@aplacetonest Thank you! That makes sense. I just got a little confused since there's AAR 3 & 4 and then BJU 3 onwards. I guess what I'm trying to decide is whether to start with BJU Phonics for 1st grade then transition to BJU English. I'm not sure that we'd need a reading program for four years.
I definitely feel it has adequate instruction. If you feel it's too much for your student, you might try Evan Moor's "Daily 6 Trait Writing." It's even more gentle than BJU's but I like them both!
Would you consider doing a video on the writing portion of the curriculum. Every video I have watched seems to focus on the grammar portion and doesn't really show the writing. Nor do they talk about the method that BJU uses for its writing.
Thanks for this thorough Flip-Through. My husband and I are considering homeschooling our kids, and one of the things that we would like to get a jump on are the curriculum choices. There are lots of out there which can be overwhelming. That's why I loved this video, not only for the Flip-Through but also for your feedback and opinion. Thanks! Would love to see any on the other subjects from BJU Press.
Are the books more level bases than grade based? My son is in grade 5 currently and we're doing Christian light Education. I love it , he doesn't. Thinking of a more hands on alternative. thanks
Do you feel BJU lays out the days lesson well? We are used to Abeka but looking into BJU for high school. My son doesn’t love videos so I would need well laid out lesson plans for a parent led approach. Thanks!
Thank you for this! I have had my eye on BJU English 2 since my daughter started Kindergarten. 😊 I am debating whether I want to spend the extra for distance learning. I'm leaning toward that to take one subject off my plate, but we'll see. I do want to find out though if any extra practice is available (like the CD) when you get the distance learning option.
This was such a great snap shot! Thanks Becky! Can you use the curriculum for more than one child if you choose to do the online teaching component. I have a rising 4th, 2nd, and 1st grader.
I would love to see test examples and if you think the lesson review quizes are enough for middle school aged kids or not. My son is starting 7th grade and I want to transition to a program that has tests soon for high school prep. We currently use tgatb, but I'm getting the feeling it's not enough for middle school and starting to do record keeping
Now I am wondering if I made the right choice for English. 😬 I will probably start with what we have but definitely keeping this in mind if I don’t feel like we are grasping concepts. Thank you for sharing
Yes, please. Give me all the flip throughs 👍, I'll be homeschooling a 1st & 4th kiddo this year. My 4th kiddo also needs extra learning support and he will get all he needs at home 🙏
Thank you!!!!!!!!! I was just looking into this last night but for grade 3. I was so undecided between this and houghton mifflin English which is way more expensive.
This was our first year homeschooling, we used Christian Light Education 3rd grade. We loved it, however it doesn't have writing and I don't want to bog her down with a ton of workbooks so I'm going to switch to BJU. Do they have a placement test? Everything you showed in this BJU 4, she's strong in (minus the writing part of course).
I'm not sure if they do or not but I will say, there is very little difference between their English 3 and 4 so I think you'd be fine using either one. Also, you can look inside each level on their website so that might be helpful to you!
@@aplacetonest do you think a child who did BJU English 3 could just go to BJU English 5 with no problem? My boys just finished BJU English 2 and 3 looks so much like 2 that I just wanted to go straight to 4. But I didn’t have the work book to look through and my consultant said I should go to 3 instead of skipping it. But the more I look at it, I really think my boys could go to 4 but I already purchased 3 because of my consultants suggestion. So since you said there isn’t much difference between 3 and 4, I am asking you what you think about skipping 4 after 3. I hope I didn’t confuse you. Lol
At what point do you know when to test? I bought the package because I agree with you about testing. I do not time at testing though. I noticed she was stressing out on the timing. Thank you!
So are you finishing up grade 4 English? We will be starting BJU 4th grade English in August. So just wandering if it was as good as 3rd grade English has been
Yes, we are nearing the end but aren't in a hurry to jump into English 5. We just take one lesson at a time and don't stress about it because, from my experience, English 3, 4 and 5 repeat the same information. If you liked English 3, English 4 is almost the exact same with maybe a bit more detail.
Thank you for this review. I bought Bookshark’s language arts for my 4th grade daughter. I am already second guessing my choice. I was stuck between Bookshark and BJU. I think I might switch over after seeing this.
I have been struggling so much lately with LOVING certain things about TGATB, but I think you just helped me realize what my hang up is. So many concepts and they are just shove shove shove They just announced that they are revamping…but you really have me wondering if this would be a better fit
Do you have a similar video for 7th grade?
Thank you for this flip -thru, very helpful.
Based on your review, this seems like a curriculum that is very parent involved and lead correct? Especially looking through that teachers manual.
Thank you. Very helpful. I especially like that you read all the contents.

Would you add a reading program to this for 4th grade?
Do you use the reading portion also? I’m wondering if I need to use both or not?

I’d love a flip through on science 4. We are starting BJU English and history this year!

Do you start using BJU Press English after you're done with All About Reading 1-4 or do you do them both every year?

I never used BJU for phonics so I can’t help with that but I’m sure it’s amazing.
Can you tell me a little about the writing portion of the curriculum. Do you belive it has adequate instruction especially for a reluctant writer.

You can find BJU all over eBay for really good prices. I got the English 8 teacher guide & student book for $50! 😊
Do you use anything for spelling and vocabulary?
Yes, we use Evan Moor workbooks for spelling and vocabulary.
Are the books more level bases than grade based? My son is in grade 5 currently and we're doing Christian light Education. I love it , he doesn't. Thinking of a more hands on alternative. thanks
I used it with my 4th grader this year. Lines up with public school grade levels well.

SUPER helpful video - thank you!
Would love to see the flip through on the other subjects . Thanks Becky.
Do you use the testing materials? I’m debating if I should use the tests. The curriculum seems very comprehensive.
Yes, we use the tests.
The teacher manual sold me. Thanks for an awesome flip through.

About how long do the lessons take each day?

Do you feel bju English has given your child a strong foundation in grammar? Do you supplement this course at all?
Yes, please do a flip through of grades 3-4 on science/history. Thank you!
The history flip-thru just went up! 😊
Do you have a video on how the writing sections are done?
No, I don't but you can view the pages on the BJU Press website to get a better look at the writing chapters.
Hi, does this English curriculum last all year? 38 weeks?
I enjoyed your flip through! Can you tell me an average amount of time that it takes per lesson for English?
I’m so glad! It all depends on the day and how much your child might be struggling but typically, they’re about 20 minutes or so.
Thank you so much. I am strongly considering Science 4 for next year. I would love a review from you.
would love to see history and science
