At the split in the timeline, he either dies by Ganondorf or beats him, but doesn’t land the killing blow due to Ganondorf being sealed away. So yeah, bro never finished the fight.
Honestly, I would've like Link to be with Zelda instead of Malon after reading the OOT manga (since i considered it a companion story to the actual Ocarina of Time game). But I guess you can't reclaimed what you already lost after being send back to the past and the events in the adult timeline forever changed you.

A story like this is all I ever wanted from Nintendo, a freaking Old Man Link that you could play as, they even had all the pieces necessary for it in Breath of the Wild too, but they had to do that BS thing where the Shrine of Resurrection not only healed Link, but also kept him youthful despite him being there for about a century, how I would have preferred it would be that he had been in a magical infused coma but his body still aged, and when he woke up he was old AF which explains why he had low stamina and health, and then as you completed shrines and got spirit orbs, you could give them to the goddess to return some of your lost youth, until you did all shrines and were back in your prime. It would be hilarious as hell too, to see all the speedrunner Links being freaking old men, because they didn't bother to restore their youth.

Tragically, the Hero of Time's experiences in the Adult timeline have changed him in ways that aren't so easily undone. Even OOT Zelda missed him dearly (as seen in the Twilight Princess manga). Whether it is in the mangas or games, I feel OOT Zelink is the most tragic love story.
The manga isn't canon to the games. Also, why would she end up with him? In the child timeline, she barely knows him and barely has a connection with him. He's a kid that one day showed up outside of the forest. In the adult timeline, she had time to build that connection as Shiek. So sure, in the adult timeline, I could see how he could POSSIBLY end up with Zelda if he stayed. But in the child timeline, that makes no sense. And who's to say that's what HE wants. OoT Link is a simple guy; he isn't meant to be a King or a ruler. Hence why he likely dies on the battlefield.

They are the reincarnations of the first hero and Hylia herself. If you have not played Skyward Sword, I recommended playing since it served as an origin story. Canon or Non-canon, I would considered the OOT manga a companion story since there are certain elements that weren't in the game like Sheik aiding Link against the Gerudo while escaping.

Thats why Zelda herself in the Majora's Mask flashback notes that she and Link had gotten close in their time together before he leaves. Also, Kings and rulers die on the battlefield too. It happened to King Rhoam in BotW.

Now I want to see an Twilight Princess mod where you play as Shade instead of Link. Imagine a mechanic where you could control whether you were ghost or solid to attack, and you could use Shade's armor to defend against certain kinds of attacks. Maybe even change some of the powers he uses, and start with all the sword skills you learn from him. Someone make this happen.

In the manga, the Hero's Shade literally comes out at the final fight to help Link fight Ganondorf for a short period. The manga is FANTASTIC.
