I wrote down every piece of baseball lingo I could think of, it's downloadable here: danblewett.com/baseball-cheat-sheet/
24 minutes ago I didn't know anything bout baseball. This video was amazing man
thanks! Glad it helped
Coming from a cricket background, the effort is appreciated. I wish a former cricketer could do this kind of video for people getting into cricket.
Appreciate it - yeah, I watched some other rules videos and they were made by non-insiders, so there was a lot of nuance and lingo missed. Figured I'd do it the way it should be done.
This guy's not a former cricketer, but he's a baseball fan who lived in Australia for a while and became a cricket fan too. Cricket explained with baseball terms.
ua-cam.com/video/EfhTPGSy1aM/v-deo.html
@@DanBlewett it's certainly thorough. BTW cricket was quite popular in the US back in the day. Philly was a hotbed for it.
@@cricketexplained8526 Funny, the first ever international cricket match was USA vs Canada, and was played in New York.
@@Jivvi yes. It wasn't quite driven out with the English as some people think.
There's absolutely no way to explain this any better. Finally, I understand the Baseball rules. Thank you so much! Cheers from Hamburg, Germany :)
Happy to help!
There are lots of videos to try to explain baseball. I think this is the best one.
As someone who knew nothing about baseball 25 minutes ago I thank you! Looks like a fun sport to watch and now I can!
That's the fascinating part about Baseball, it may seem boring on the outside for many, but it's so deep!
Baseball is my all-time favorite sport, but I've never really understood or even have known all the rules. This video was extremely helpful!
Happy to help! Thanks for watching!
Outstanding explanation... as a brazillian i'm used to easy to understand games like soccer, basketball and handball. I learned the fundamentals of football watching the NFL, playing Madden22 and watching youtube videos. Now i'm into baseball... it's a tricky game to grasp, but i'm absolutely in love with it. thank's for the amazing content. cheers from Brazil.
How the hell does being a Brazilian make you easily understand the rules of sports????
Thanks so much!! Never watched a baseball game in my life and honestly I still don't get it; will have to watch your vid a couple more times. But I was so surprised about the depth of the game (not much you have to know in soccer...). Can't wait to watch a couple games!
Thanks for adding actual captions for the Deaf - makes clear explaination even better!
Bro. You taught me the game so easily. I now understand baseball!!
This is such a great video! I hope a ton of people find it and learn to appreciate what an awesome game baseball is! Thanks, Dan!
Glad you enjoyed it!
thank you SO much for making this!! my boyfriend has played baseball throughout his entire childhood & college & its still his favorite sport, but i am so clueless when it comes to sports lol. I just really want to be able to understand his interests more in depth! this is definitely helping me learn in an easy way!!!
I played ball in highschool, and I loved everything about the game. I played catcher and caught every game for my highschool team except for a single inning where I was moved to right field against a team that kept hitting fly doubles into right field that would get dropped by our younger outfielders, and I caught 3 hitters in a row to save us from complete humiliation in a 10-2 game.
I wanted to play pro ball. I wanted to catch in the big game. I loved the teamwork between myself and the pitcher. I loved defending home plate and tagging runners. I loved the deception and trickery of the setup and the catch. And I was pretty good at it.
Only one problem. I couldn't hit a ball to save my life. As a catcher I could follow that ball and snag it right in the pocket of my glove 99% of the time, but put a bat in my hand and I couldn't see the ball, where it was going, I couldn't tell when to swing, and I struck out 80% of my at-bats. The rest were either walks or lucky ground singles to left field.
My point is, yeah man, you're spot on. Hitting a round ball with a round bat is one of the hardest things to do in sports. But I will forever love the game. It has everything. Luck, skill, strategy, tactics, drama, feuds and complete unpredictability. Baseball is the greatest.
thanks for watching and for sharing your story!
@@DanBlewett I dunno if you've done this idea, but I'd love to see a video about the farm system from A to Majors, now the various leagues formed, and how the game changed when interleague games started in MLB.
@@DJSockmonkeyMusicGreat suggestions!
I'm a Brazilian guy...I played soccer junior leagues as a teen, up till I was 16, than I got into jiu jitsu and mma..today I am 31 and I saw a guy playing a game called MLB 24 ROAD TO THE SHOW...than I went and started seeing some real life highlights of real games. Now I just wanna learn this damn game IRL. Goddamit, I would trade my BJJ purple belt for the chance to have known this sport at an early age...
Great video! Would love to see one on offensive roles such as the batting order, pinch hitters and runners, and rules on stealing bases
Great suggestion! I'm actually working on that now.
You seem like a really nice guy, who is really passionate about the sport. Thanks for this video, I had to get the rules straight again because I have not played baseball in a long time and I want to visit my first MLB game soon! ✌️
I wish we had this sport at school when I was young in England.
very good video. the fight between batter and pitcher is always interesting to watch. it makes the game of baseball.
Finally I understand the rules of baseball. Thanks you Coach.
I've played and watched baseball all my life but never really looked into the rules. Baseball is, as you said, actually fairly complicated. Great video!
Thank you for making and sharing this video! I'm a lifelong NFL fan and never understood a single bit about baseball. I love the vibe at baseball stadiums (if that makes sense) and hearing it on TV, so I'm excited to learn about it so I actually know what's going on. It's definitely going to take lots of rewinding and rewatching, lol
be sure to watch games along with this - go on MLB.com and they have old ones to replay. It will make a lot more sense with an actual game on hand!
I am just transitioning from basketball to baseball (just joined a slow pitch softball team) and you sir, are a gold mine!
That’s kinda like saying, I’ve decided to transition from playing golf to racing cars……..there’s not a whole lot of carry over skills other than basic hand-eye coordination and your ability to run fast for very short periods of time
@@Stark21293 So what, is there a problem with making that type of brave transition. I think the difference is the point, why else would it he such a big deal to make a change. Whats the point of ridiculing someone for what should be praised as an achievement. I guess I’m yapping and overplaying it a little but still man, get a life and dont put others down.
Covering baseball rules in one video is quite a challenge since the number of rules in the book is daunting. This applies to softball as well. Although this video begins to dip into the weeds of detail at times, it is still a good overview. As a high school softball coach, it is amazing how many talented kids enter our program with weak knowledge and misconception of even the most basic rules. The same is apparently true on the baseball side. This is because parents and youth coaches have themselves learned the rules not by actually reading them, but rather by hearsay, word of mouth, and listening to uninformed sportscasters. Myths and lack of knowledge about even basic rules persist. Examples: Conflating obstruction and interference (one pertains to defense and the other to offense); Thinking that two runners on a base is an automatic out; Not knowing the difference between dead ball and delayed dead ball; Confusing baseline and base path; The difference between player interference and retired player interference; Purpose and use of the running lane; (the list goes on). Diving to specific rules in separate dedicated videos would be an excellent service to both baseball and softball. In doing so, it would be very valuable to craft rules discussions not in terms of MLB rules, but rather rules that are in place for the younger levels. After all, it is highly unlikely that major league players would be using this forum to learn rules. Kids (and parents/coaches) at the younger levels, on the other hand, would. Kids learning the game need to know the rules that pertain to them. A good example... sliding to "break up" a double play in MLB is ok. Doing the same thing at younger levels can get a player ejected. Video discussions of rules are great as long as they are accurate, seek to dispel myths, and are aimed at the audience that is actually at the stage of learning basics. Thanks for making this video!
yeah, it's really easy to quickly dip into the weeds - so many "but..." or "however, if this occurs..." stipulations. Thanks for the comment
I use this video and your other materials in my History of Sports class - THANK YOU!!!
Awesome. Glad it’s helped
This helped a lot thank you 😊
You’re welcome 😊
Best wishes from Brazil ! Thank u !! That helped a lot
Great video! Love to see other people explaining the game to help players and coaches out!
Great video! Super helpful for understanding baseball.
I was searching for an easy-to explain video to share with foreign friends to introduce them to the game--esp., prior to watching one on TV or (come baseball season) at a ballpark. This is the best that I've come across. Well done--and thanks!
thanks! Glad it helped!
Hey Coach Dan, thanks for the video, took a couple of rewatches but this has helped me tremendously to become a fan of the game. Cheers!
glad it helped!
Trying to learn how this works so I can watch with my dad, he would spend a bunch of money to bring me to baseball games when I was younger. Never understood but it was fun watching it.
Great video! I’d love to watch a video about the different pitching techniques with slow motion videos. From a pro pitcher, this would be gold! Thanks for the time you’re putting into these quality videos.
Thank you so much =) Very nice video ,clear
Thanks Coach Dan so much for the description/explanation! Very helpful! 🙂😊
You are so welcome!
Thanks. You're the first person that I saw on UA-cam that can explain this rules in a very easy, clear and "digestive" way to understand. Even for a polish person. Baseball is not very popular sport in Poland (unfortunately) but I found it most interesting of all 😉
thanks for watching - glad it helped!
I enjoy your videos. You progress through the rules nicely with good explanations. Easy to follow. Thank you
Thanks for watching!
I played baseball from late childhood though young adult thinking I knew the rules then when I decided I wanted to try being an umpire and I truly saw how deep the rules go lol. That test was stressful
i wanted to learn baseball after seeing shohei ohtani play and this video was very helpful, thank you so much for the effort!

@@DanBlewett You'd fit In, great. They emphasize not to just be good at the game, but good for the game. Can honestly say, you reflect that.
sounds like they're doing good work.
thank you for the video one thing I didn't understand was the fair vs foul balls section at 2:33 and now I understood that by watching the video but I wanted to ask why if you are 0-2 as a batter you get unlimited fouls why doesn't that count as a strike after your 2nd
Great Video!
I am a baseball player (amateur/ premiere level) and there are sooo many rules in baseball that it is really hard to explain them. Great job!
I’m an American so I “knew” the rules but this is a pretty cool video thanks man!
great video sir thank you !!!
Bro thanks so much, I’m starting baseball again my sophomore year and I haven’t played since 8th grade this rlly replenished my memory and u made it very understandable👍👍🔥🔥
Good luck!!
Aye bro did you have tryouts already? If so how were they cause I’m also in 10th grade but barely started getting into baseball with no team experience just family games
very thorough... good job.

Good video 👌🏾
this was very helpful because i am starting baseball today in my highschool
Thx for the help.
Great video. Thank you
You are welcome!
Baseball is such a nuanced game that you really only start to get after years of watching/playing. Casual fans can go years without ever even knowing about pitch framing
I needed this video. It's deep enough that I get it enough. I'll be starting to play baseball in the fall. I'm joining miracle league baseball, it's adaptive
go watch some games on TV also, then re-watch bits and pieces. it'll come.
I'm hooked to baseball thanks to Moneyball movie, but as we all know, the best way to experience baseball is to go to the stadium. When you watched it on TV, I noticed that you'll missed a lot of the whole play. And as a Malaysian, baseball is one of the minority sport.
Got most of it I think. You should come over to England so we can go through it as it happens. Or a bit idea I come over there and go to a game. Great video
Thank you from the UK. Really helpful. Never realised a foul ball can be a strike. This may come from watching lots of highlights where there have already been two strikes. Great stuff.
Glad it helped
Fantastic
This was such an excellent breakdown for people new to baseball! I’m going to recommend it to a reaction channel that wants to learn more about the game.
Awesome thank you!
@@DanBlewett Of course! 😊
Still no idea what’s going on, but video is really great. Might watch it few times more)
18:25 As the story goes, Wee Willie Keeler used to bunt a ton of balls foul until he found a pitch he liked. MLB changed the rule in 1895 to the current one to combat this type of strategy. I can't find much truth to this story, but it does fit in the timeline of when he played (1892 - 1910). So, it's possible.
Thanks!
You're welcome!
I like how you explain all this. I was reading "watching baseball smarter - zack hample", and sometimes I read the same section for 10 times to be able to understand it. all these things you mentioned in this video are pretty basic, but again it helped me to solidify what I already know, and gave me a more clear understanding about the basics of the game. even tho I know all of them. very good explanations, thanks a lot!
Glad it was helpful!
@@DanBlewett can you also explain some more complicated games, and strategies like hit-and-play, infield fly rule, defensive indifference etc. or if you were already?
i have made those, search my channel
Please never mention Zach hample.
@@hifijohn why is that?
I'm from the Balkans and baseball isn't really big here at all... in Europe even... anyways I find the game fascinating and this is such a good video. Thanks
Great explanation for the novice.
thanks!
Hi,
A few questions about the actions of a catcher.
(1) after a fair hit the ball goes into the outfield. Can the catcher remove his protective mask and place it on the third base line?
The runners are rounding bases as the ball is thrown back in to the catcher.
(2) The ball is thrown wide and hits the catchers’ face mask (he placed on 3rd base line earlier) which stops it from travelling further behind his position at home plate. Is this a form of interference?
The catcher then picks up the ball and tags the runner coming home from 3rd.
(3) is the runner out?
(4) should the umpire call “time” when the ball hit the catchers mask on the 3rd base line and declare the ball ded? (sorry for bad spelling lol)
Appreciate the vid coach.... Just 1 question can a baserunner advance if the right fielder catches a foul ball???
runners can tag up on any fly ball - fair or foul. I didnt go into tagging up in this video, but the answer is yes.
This is too legit! To the point, but thorough!
Good
Great vid, is there any baseball matches on yt that are considered great games? I'm new to the sport after watching a documentary on Netflix about the mavericks, thanks 😊
Search for "world series" and see what comes up - but just be careful to not call baseball games "matches" - we never use that term. MLB.com also has an archive of free games to watch.
@@DanBlewett thanks for the heads up
Hi! Great video. I was wondering what the point of the catcher is. Does anything happen if the catcher doesn’t catch a pitch? And do they do anything other than just catch it and throw it back to the pitcher?
yes lots of things happen, but that was a little too specific for this video. Catcher needs to catch it - helps "frame" the ball for the umpire which helps get pitches called as strikes, and must catch or keep the ball in front of him with runners on base - they can advance all they want, so if he doesnt catch it they can run amok
@@DanBlewett Thanks, that really cleared things up!
I've always loved watching top level baseball but as a cricket person (Aus) never fully understood all the rules. I'm gunna watch your other ones now.
One thing I didn't see covered was, does a runner, say on 2nd base, have to run when the hitter hits a ball in play?
it depends on if it's a force out situation or not.
@@DanBlewett Thanks.
Im pretty sure I covered that in the video, but I'm also (slowly) working on a video specifically on tag outs vs force outs.
@@DanBlewett
Maybe, I may just not understand the lingo properly.
A runner is only required to run if they are in a force situation. A force situation only happens when the batter hits the ball on the ground and the runner is either (a) on first base or (b) on second or third base and all of the bases behind him are occupied.
Force outs can only be recorded against runners in a force situation. The batter is always under a force situation if he hits a fair ground ball.
If it's not in the strike zone,
And the hitter doesn't swing (takes the pich) ... IT'S A BALL
Angel Hernandez, "I think not"
Brilliant video, monumental effort, i am sure you did a great job, game still doesn't make any sense!
millions of people, including children, watch the game and understand it well. its doable
@@DanBlewett Oh, it is, I'm sure, but the limited access to broadcasts outside the US and the MLB's decision for even old games not be available online makes it inaccessible, I am sure with the wealth of information you've provided anyone would pick it up after watching a game or two.
still, to me, doesn't make sense as much as cricket doesn't, nothing against the sport itself billions are passionate about, more about my preferences
My 86-year-old mother has been asking me questions about the rules of baseball my entire life. She will never understand it. I don't think the rules are complex at all, but that's me.
I’m headed to my first Mets game, thanks for helping me not be bored😍 Whose a good Mets player right now that I should look for?🥰

@@DanBlewett they lost, but I had a great time. I even explained some of the rules to my friend, so we both had more fun than usual ❤️
yo i have a question, is there any limit to how much balls a pitcher can pitch at a time? does one pitcher play through the whole game or just one inning?
its open ended
@@DanBlewett ohh aight thanks
What's the rule regarding a fly Ball to the outfield and the 1st base runner sets off thinking the out field won't catch it ?can he keep going or does he have to wait until the ball is caught or dropped, if he goes past 2nd base and the ball is caught can he go back and tag 2nd base or does he have to go all the way back to 1st
Thanks for this video, im from England and love baseball
They have to catch or drop it before you can advance
@@DanBlewett if the base runner knows the ball is not going to be caught surely he can start advancing before it hits the ground
Thanks for replying
of course. if its caught, they have to go back, touch their original base before advancing
What Organization did you play for? I pitched in the Pirates,Braves, Brewers and Rangers Organizations from 1990 to 1995.went to big league Spring Training in 1993 and 1994
Google it. Baseball stats come up. He played from 2010 to 2016 but not in the majors or minors. Looks to be independent leagues.
In the scenario in which there are 2 out and a runner on base and the 3rd out occurs after the player on base crosses home plate, why doesn't the run count if it occurs before the out? Hope that's clear.
because thats the rule
@@DanBlewett Any chance you can use you resources and delve a little deeper? Seems to make sense that a run crosses before the out the inning is still in play.
@@DanBlewett and thank you
no - it would be illogical to allow routine non-hits to score runs in that manner.
@@DanBlewett thanks, I appreciate your knowledge
My question is when you have for example a Runner on First Base and a batter WHO batts the ball to a fly out , at the Moment the ball is caught the Runner on first has to Tag Up I know that , but let's assume the Runner on First base didn't Tag Up because he tried to steal a Base is it necessary when he runs to his starting Base again to Tag him Out or is this a force out Situation that the First baseman has Just to step on First Base with ball in His Glove?
Second question is let's assume you have two runners ,one on first and Second on Second Base and a batter , the batter bats to a fly out and the Second Base Runner Tries to steal a Base to third base .the Second Base Runner didn't Tag Up ,he runs Back to Second Base but the Runner on First Base tagged Up so i guess the Runner on First is automatically Out since you can't have two runners on one Base ( the Second base in this Case) but the Runner on Second Base has then to be Just forced Out when he didn't make IT in time to Second Base again or has then to be tagged Out? I know you can Always Tag Out but is it necessary in this Case ?
Just step on first.
@@DanBlewett and I guess to my Second question the Second baseman or short Stop has Just to step on Second Base?
yes, you're applying the same rule
@@DanBlewett thank you very much again, and of course for the Videos you've done . I am from Germany so we have only two Games per month where we can watch a Game on free TV .I subscribed to MLB TV to watch a lot more .
No more pitcher batting is a horrible day for baseball ⚾⚾
23 min ago I didn’t know almost anything about baseball, but now my understanding has went from 0,1% to around 3,5% 😂 so technically i still dont understand almost anything but yeah
Not sure if this is really unusual, but when I played baseball, we actually did play with a time limit. I think we usually played 5 or 6 innings, but whichever inning had started when the time was up would be the last inning, even if it was a tie.
Not normal except in tournaments.
@@DanBlewett Fair enough. This was just a league where we'd play one game every week for half the year. I think they did 7-inning games in the play-offs, and probably a 9-inning game for the final. Idk, we didn't make it that far.
youth baseball is played in a tournament format a lot of the time here, and it ruins baseball. I get the need for time limits when field usage has to be tightly scheduled, but youth baseball is a joke in the US right now - just a side note. Baseball is best without time limits.
Pretty good. Didn’t cover foul tips into catcher’s glove as third strike, or dropped third strikes. Would also have liked to have seen a very brief overview of the jobs of various positions, also showing cutoffs and relays, etc.
Let me add that it’s difficult when you have brand new players show up to 14 or 16U to play ball for the first time. There’s no time to explain everything to them at that level, so finding videos that give a good overview is a must. I will send this one out to my newbs 😀
yeah, i intentionally didnt cover every single thing or this video would have been an hour long. You don't need to know dropped third strikes or foul tips if you're watching your first few baseball games. those details will fill in as you actually watch the game
@Coach Dan Blewett Agree. A good understanding of the basic rules is the essential foundation from which to build. Understanding the marerial here will allow someone to follow a game. Watching with that basic understanding together with a knowledgeable fan will allow the beginner to pick up the more complex rules and finer points of the game. For instance, it's great to know that a team (in MLB, at least) loses the DH for the game when putting that player in the field, but is that really necessary for the beginner? Even casual fans aren't aware of that rule.
This is a very complicated game, but at least i got something though it’s not easy to understand it on the first time you watch it i think i have to watch alot of baseball games to get an idea
Yeah you have to watch the game and then it’ll come. Watch a few then come back to this video. Also my cheat sheet download will help
Exactly the video I was looking for (as a Swede wanting to learn:) )! Perfect depth and pacing for a beginner video without being too short. Great content, thanks :)
How are pitchers and hitters including umpires able to eyeball the strike zone because the square is something that producers probably add during the game so I'm assuming that box doesn't exist while you're playing in the field. You did mention it somewhat earlier.
They just eyeball it
Hi! I’ve been trying to get into baseball but I come from a soccer background… A soccer match lasts (on average) 90 minutes, split into two halves of 45 minutes each.
When you so naturally say “playing the top half of an inning and bottom half of an inning, I have no idea what you are talking about. 😂 but, with all my heart, I really want to understand it.
Could you be so kind as to explain what exactly that means?
