- John Mellencamp performs Rain on the Scarecrow at Farm Aid 2016 at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, Virginia, on September 17.
Farm Aid was started by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp in 1985 to keep family farmers on the land and has worked since then to make sure everyone has access to good food from family farmers. Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's board of directors in 2001.
For more information about Farm Aid, visit: farmaid.org/you...
Farm Aid's performances are donated by the artists in order to raise funds and raise awareness for family farmers. They've raised their voices to help - what can you do?
I was 12 when this album came out. I was raised on music with lyrics that had *meaning* & lived in the middle of nowhere in Cornfield County USA as a kid. This song is so powerful -- so visceral in its imagery, you cannot help but be affected by its raw power & pain.
Cornfield USA encompasses a lot of land but not people and im thinkin real hard at goin back to the middle of no where . All the stress leaves me with this notion so it must mean something
This song shows that Farmers deserve much more respect and support than they receive, in 2020 this still rings true. We've got to bring back support for family farms, because families lead a legacy and hold us all together. Thanks JCM for opening my eyes with this song.
As Trump said March 2020, "this is gonna be biblical"..!

What in the world are you talking about

As a fan from the eighties, I raise my hat again. These power rock songs from the countryside always fascinate me. As a small farm son myself, this really gets under my skin.
That violin and accordion they had in the 80s.. Mr Snare, Kenny Aronoff back then.. Oh boy. This drummer is great, too!
With lots of love from Finland! Never lose hope. Things will get better!
Great video and sound quality - awesome Band, the violonist exceptional.
This song always makes me cry. I remember my papaw. He was a farmers son and a farmer himself all his life. It’s not an easy life. Working before sun up till after the sunsets. Just trying to make it everyday. God bless the farmers.
my father was a farmer and i want to be one now. it is the only way we will survive in this pandemic. god bless you mr. mellecamp!
John’s violinist (Miriam) is absolutely the BEST. She is excellent. Great job by a great band. You guys are all awesome.
PROUD TO BE A FARMERS DAUGHTER plus 5 gen! of family all farmers dairy!
same here produce farmer ,,, blessings
One of the hardest working gigs there is , Im no farmer but i know .
Thank you
Real heroes! ♥️♥️♥️
@John Mellencamp I would love a piece of your art work..your a awesome artist too
This song has become more meaningful for me over the years. Last time I heard it live, I was brought to tears. 35 years of following John and his band, and I never am disappointed at a show. A true artist, storyteller and musician. See you soon in Des Moines and Minneapolis!
You and I have the same feeling toward John and his music
That intro is dam good I love it! 💯🔥🔥
So much from this song, and the album, that still ring true today. We never change. America only improves if it's for the corporations and rich. John speaks the truth. But no one listens.
Amen. So true.
I do!
Me too, Bro. It's almost 2020. When will John and so many other real progressives come out and support Bernie Sanders?
Thank God for corporations that bring us music and make it attractive by getting musicians rich.
@@roadracer517 lol..yep
When I get to that age I'd like to have the energy and talent as the lady playing the violin. My respect!!!
that was a very nice comment
She is awesome ,and she never wears shoes on stage, saw farm Aid 2013 Saratoga, then John Mellencamp in 2015 in Albany and she rocked, and wore no shoes..
Great performance. Is she the same violin player at the 1987 paper in fire video clip?
@voilaviolamh Thanks a lot!
@voilaviolamh Thought her name was Ruth.
Any young person who is interested in taking up the violin needs to listen to this violinist, she is so inspiring she makes her violin talk
Notice anything unusual about her violin?
@@jimaiello750 yes
Lisa , glad to see she still is a part 👍
As was mentioned before, Miriam Sturm is a beast on the violin. She plays it with a lot of attitude, and proves violins are for more than just stodgy orchestra music.
There are millions of orchestras that have played exciting music
@luke5100 Definitely fiddlin'. Trivia question: What's the difference between a violin and a fiddle?
Before I die, I want to see at least 1 more Mellencamp concert.
John Mellencamp How about re releasing this song back out, to the public in 2023?
I so agree! 2024! How sad is this that there are individuals of the world who don't know where their food comes from. Rain on the Scarecrow 🎸
This song has been one of my favorites for the past 40 plus years.
Saw John Mellencamp's Scarecrow Tour 1986 Worcester Centrum, Mass. Great show and tour!
That's his best song ever, right there.
I’m old. Been around since Jack and Diane. I love this dude. Our views may differ but he is americana To me
John , you are a true treasure to this fellow Hoosier (Anderson) and to our nation. Thank you for the years! God bless!
I bought this album when it came out. It's been awhile, along while, still good. I almost forgot about the fight for family farms. BLM, is no different. As Americans, we should always defend one another.
Fart Knocker Farmer Lives Matter
Yep 1985 , I was right behind you.that all led from phone calls to John from neighbors and Farmers in the area trying to get the government to notice, because their farms were being foreclosed on John went in front of Whitehouse hearings on the issues and using his voice to speak for the people, I know he hated that bueracacy, he's always spoke his mind thru his music, then Willie calls he says John lets put on benefit shows and figure something out. Farm Aid still an annual event the longest running aid festival . what's that make it , upcoming in Sept 2022 , 37 years , that's something else.

Don't rely on politicians to resolve these problems, these politicians created them to make themselves appear meaningful...

Awesome version. Love the guitar change & Miriam is a female beast on the violin. I'm so sad for our crops this year. 2019 thanks for trying so hard John! 😞
Ginny Vapes Been a JM fan for years, over here in Scotland. Would love to travel over one day, and see him playing to his home crowd....a lot of my cycling buddies work the land...God Bless farmers the world over...🏴🇺🇸
THANK YOU to these wonderful musicians trying to help out hard working people!
nothing wrong with that song, his band, or himself. John Mellencamp writes music with his heart.
I love FARM AID! I LOVE Nelson,Young, and Mellencamp for founding it. what a beautiful and giving, selfless thing to do for the AMERICAN FARMERS,AND PEOPLE. THX ALL WHO PARTICIPATE EVERY YEAR. MUCH LOVE,AND RESPECT. MANY BLESSINGS TO YOU ALL.
Saw John in concert late 80s when stationed at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. Incredible then and now!
to the violin lady..awesome...thank you.....
I grew up on a farm in Western North Carolina. Sadly, developers got it as we were taxed out of existence. Between the local governments looking at increasing the tax base and the big company farms worrying more about their profit margin and their bottom line, your local farmers are being ground down until we will have no legacy left to leave our children. This isn't a left issue or a right issue but an American issue that takes everyone, working together; to make our voices heard in state capitals and in Washington DC. Thank You John, Willie, and Neil, and for all of those who've contributed to Farm Aid over these many years.
Amazing
Excellent !!
Mellencamp Rocks
God bless our farmers today.
Thats a man that we listen 2 lets keep R Country. That R R fathers gave Us B PROUD. WOW Stand PROUD!
john mellecamp is a visionary .. .. respect to you brother ...
Absolutely love the drum style. Thumbs up!
Love this!
Somehow I made it to my 30s before I ever really listened to this song. Damn does it hit home, seeing how our farm ceased operation in 2004 after many many decades. RIP Grandaddy, LJ Watson Farms, Atmore, AL.
Goosebumps. Have adored this man since the Australian Scarecrow tour in 1985 which I went to.😊
first cassette (yes I'm an old MFer) was mellencamp's scarecrow,my dad gave it to me. I went to school with and admired all these farm kids, tougher than a coffin nail. tougher than me anyways, mentally and physically
Traylarpark12 John is a FFA boy so it’s in his blood
I had the LP for The Lonesome Jubilee.
I support America... I served.
2020
Still true and listening
Beautiful.
HOLY F I LOVE THE LIVE VERSION MORE THAN THE STUDIO VERSION
Saw him in concert last night at EKU Center for the Arts. He was great! Every fan should go see him if you get a chance.
all I can say is thank you john for yrs an yrs of good music I grew up on it.. you are truly a good guy I saw him back in 94 in his hay day
...well as we all now hes getting old soooo sad when he passes away so sad. but he aint dead yet. almost 2017
GONNA BE SAD WHEN ANY OF THEM DIE, SO WHY EVEN MENTION THAT?
It takes wise man to recognize beauty, and a fool to let it go.
One of America's best.
Absolutely gorgeous to see, just wish I could've been there, I'm young, just turned 27, but John is a true idol to me, his music mentored me through a really messed up childhood, I love this man!!!!!!
❤
What a fresh way to go into a new song , let them get a little solo spotlight, after playing it for 10 k times , your gonna want to say "Hey ,I got an idea" lol
One of the best songs J Mellencamp
This is perhaps my favorite song by Mellencamp.
Me too...
One of the most powerful song lyrics ever written
Excellent guest violinist and Guitarist!

BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE IVE HEARD COUGAR MELLENCAMP STILL SOUNDS GOOD.
My favorite JCM song! Great live intro.
❤
Thank you for sharing this!
Grew up in Nebraska, brings back memories
Seen him @5 times. It has always been about the lyrics and the fabulous band(s) he tours with (eg. K.Aronoff previously on drum
Yes! The answer is yes!!!😍
Awesome! No, John doesn't have the energy he used to have, but this arrangement of "Rain on the Scarecrow" is so much more nuanced than the already fantastic original version. IMHO, there is a bit less anger, but in this version there is more saddness, as well as an overall sense of the disheartening/disorienting effect the foreclosure experience had on the farmers....I am impressed ! (and, FWIW, even after the hundreds of times I've listened to the Scarecrow album, it still blows me away...)
I agree with most of this but as a drummer and a Kenny Aronoff fan this, as good as this drummer is, just doesn't have the same groove and pocket as the original. But that's true of most things that Kenny plays on when another drummer tries to cover it. He has the things most true drummers kill for, yes chops, but more importantly, a pocket like no other.
Derek Baker
Yes! Awesome song.
Derek Baker we all get old dude
Derek, kit up brother....before a dictator worse than Obama comes to power...remember Lexington and Concord, well in the 21st Century it will be Portland and Seattle....
Derek Baker. WELL SAID!! many singers' voices take on gravelly, rougher, maybe harsher tones from decades of abuse but it simply adds another dimension to his musical repertoire; who can find problems with that. He sounds darn good for being 70 years old or so.
Miss his old backing band. Toby Myers(bass), Larry Crane(guitars), Kenny Aronoff(drums), Lisa Germano(fiddle) and Mike Wanchic(guitars). Guess it’s just business.
Mike still with him
I 💯agree with you! This is just lacking that groove Kenny was able to throw down for the band;nothing against these folks though!
Yes it was Larry Crane that made the sound.
I have to agree, this has a fraction of the energy of 1985 when he first did it
jim68 and do not forget Lisa Germano on fiddle 🙂
👌👌👌
Bring on mr. John
Pretty good!
rain on de farm...........blood in da soil............good will prevail over evil
Been a big MellenCougarCamp fan for years but its just sad to me to hear and see him now.Never been so disappointed in a concert in my life when I saw him on tour with Fogerty, thats the last time I will pay money to see him in concert.Fogerty made Mellenhead look like an old man
well. he is an old man.
Cool 😎 👍🇺🇸..
Wow the live version is good.
Hello Stacy how are you doing!!
@@larrybill2661 not interested please leave me alone
Proud to be 3rd gen rice farmer
at about 3:45 of this video. ... what is that that Dane is playing with his right hand? Anyone know. - thanks
Why is John C. Reilly sitting where Kenny usually sits?
Thats funny
Excellent intro... love that Violin!
The passion and the rawness of the original song is not there..
Australia
so f'n good. LOVE
I sense a defect in whomever gives this a thumbs down.
at this moment...I amstanding ND aplouding the lady...
This was my favorite song as a kid
utterly bad ass American dirge
and the violinist destroys it in the opening
TRUE AMERICANS FOR AMERICA.
Did he really spit before the 1st verse while approaching the Mike??
Great Singer...fan of J. Coughar
Right inspired the coco melon doll Ms Shannon
Someone help me out with what songs are in that medley. I caught "I Need a Lover", but can't place the rest of it.
Ya I'd like to figure it out too. A few more listens perhaps lol ☺
she is good
No farmers no bee s no us
comunque mi, par conto mio, sta verxion qua che John riva e el spùa partera a xè a mejo. E anca el batterista col toco de fero. Xio canèa bromba, che roba... e po', che sberla de Gibson gàlo, staltro mona. Super.
Hallo! Who’s playing with him on this show??
thank you mstrbillable, very nice.
Even though i dont have a farm im in the category of the newer logger well new generation both my uncles had farms and also logged
i am diggin the drummer.
I dig his use of that thing he taps on with right hand stick during the verses. Looks like part of a plastic trash can lid. Much different sound than what you get with a high hat, ride cymbal, or floor tom. Make sort of a clicking sound.
His name is Dane Clark definitely no Kenny Aronoff. I guess it’s just business.
Johnny Cougar gets all the roots
Mike Bloomberg says Farming is a easy job! Factory workers are poor and uneducated! I must be dumb AF! I retired from Ford and my husband GM
