1d’s version, to me, talks about a girl who was actually attractive, but didn’t believe it. Here, it adds more depth, like the girl was beautiful because she had a beautiful soul and it’s tragic how she couldn’t see that she was a beautiful human being, how she thought it didn’t count. It talks about a beauty that goes beyond looks.
I think The 1975 makes songs that feel like unrequited love better than any band I know of. 102, Somebody Else, Woman, and this cover and their cover of So Good to Me all feel like that to me.

So be thankful; what people seem to forget is One Direction recorded that song in 2011 they were the definition of "the bubblegum pop boyband" they were between 17-19 they've grown a lot now, as people and musicians. They even said they don't really like singing wmyb live because their voices have changed so much and they're growing as people. One Direction put their own originality to this song and the 1975 covered it in an original way too. I think if One Direction were to have recorded this song now they'd definitely have it similar to this, especially since because they've grown as artists. But either way, the song still has the same meaning. One Direction made theirs more lively and happy, the 1975 covered it more slowly and emotionally. Either way the song is just as beautiful. Yes, I was a big fan of One Direction. Yes, I do love The 1975 now. My music taste evolves all the time, but I believe this cover give something the original lacks. It expresses the lyrics in a way that seem like it means something. Matty is passionate about what he is singing and he is putting his soul into the lyrics. It gives the slow vibe that allows the lyrics to sink in and it gives a new meaning to beauty.

parudise it's 1D's team's fault 😑 They ruined most of the first sings because they weren't "appropriate for young teenagers". They wanted to write mature, deep and beautiful songs since the beginning. They wrote some but they weren't chosen as singles so the world only listened to the singles, which were mostly childish. My point is, One Direction never got a chance because of their management and when people started realising that they could write mature songs like Perfect, Love You Goodbye and I Want to Write You a Song, the hiatus came.

don´t get me wrong, i really like 1D, but i think after these years i am allergic to wmyb. But this cover is really good, and it sounds more comfy, if you know what i mean. :)
I love One Direction & The 1975. I don't understand why everyone in the comments is full out comparing them. They are literally as different as two bands can get, why even bother to compare? Both are great in my opinion, and obviously other people think so too because of the amount of success both groups have received.
