    You Brits may or may not realize this but, people like David Mitchell are some of the best ambassadors of British culture, for anyone who speaks English, around the world.

      @@shanefoy3720 Thanks to programs such as Would I Lie To You , I get your reference to North vs South in England . Again, without people like Mitchell or Mack I, as a none Brit English speaker ( I’m Persian ) would not be familiar with or have such an affinity for British culture. Good for you guys for producing such amazing wits ( along with Stephen Fry and multiple others) in your culture.

      It is rare that two people who love each other can truly bond in as many equal ways. (I am biased admittedly, mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa, I am both married twice, and twice divorced so my apologies for going by my own experiences. I cannot, and therefore should not (?) comment upon others?

    It's interesting to compare David's interpretation of Clouseau's comic appeal with that of Commissioner Dreyfus (Herbert Lom) in the same film series. Unlike Clouseau, Dreyfus is fully aware of both the past and the likely future. He is "the one sane man" in the films, and in fact it is this that drives him into madness. I think Dreyfus is closer to Mitchell's own comic sensibility than is Clouseau.

    30 Rock is undeniably brilliant and often quite insightful, when it isn't being weirdly, intensely classist or racist. For me the Leap Day episode has encapsulated the experience of being an undiagnosed neurodivergent adult, but I also see numerous other ways it could be read - which seems to me a core strength of the piece.
    The show is aging weirdly, for sure, in a culture that is changing quickly. Some jokes seem ahead of where we are now, some seem weirdly regressive for their date of issue. This has been laid at Fey's feet, with some justification, but given the intense pace, the massive gag count, and shifting point of view, one can assume that many voices are being blended here. Perhaps it simply needed a bit more reflection and compassion at times.

    • @perseus9428
      @perseus9428 3 місяці тому +2

      With all due respect, "regressive" is in the eye of the beholder and very few actually funny jokes pass through the Woke beholders' without being condemned.

      It plays a lot of stereotypes, but I generally felt like there was a consciousness that they _were_ stereotypes and over the top caricatures. I don't remember it generally being played off as if this is what people are really like.

      The definition of slapstick excludes him from this given that you actually have to have more than two functional brain cells to understand its subtlety.
      Whereas everyone, no matter how brainless, can enjoy slapstick.
