You know, it doesn't even have to be a betrayal per se. I mean, yeah, them dying is the big win, but who says you can't be honest about it? "Hey, I said it was the most dangerous dungeon out there, with the most powerful loot. Just the fact that the treasure chest itself ate half the party is a testament to that!" Adventurers are known to go after that sort of thing, you know. It's a all win for everybody!
I can see a PC playing Doot opting for going on those dangerous adventures along with everyone else, and earnestly trying for the win. The death by (unspeakable horror, slime, or being dumb enough to mount the nightmare because she lets you) just goes along with the territory. Plus it makes for the best tales on Friday nights with his patron buddy.

    • @Rhyusfox
      @Rhyusfox 5 років тому +65

Technically, it seems like it just has to be "deadly", as in screw up and you're dead. Not necessarily the "yeah, you set foot in here, you're good as toast." Could be Doot's lich buddy just doesn't want to hear boring adventure stories. The occasional death or TPK just being the more amusing anecdotes.

I always played the patrons to a certain extent. I had a player who didn't want anything too "evil" so he chose a Fey patron. Basically, he was some Fey's booty call. She liked him, came to visit sometimes at night, was gone at the morning, and nothing more. He gained powers from being her favorite, as a "gift" ,not from any explicit pact or contract. Nobody else saw her, she was the most beautiful being, pretty chill most of the time and enjoyed hearing about his adventures and all was fine and pretty harmless (fade to black). I rolled for her visit, she didn't come really that often in the end.
One night, after rescuing the town with the party, he seduced some local maid and brought her to his room. I rolled. The fey was coming. I had to think a bit about it then it was obvious. Don't make a fey jealous.
He woke up in the morning with the bed, the walls, himself covered in the poor girl's blood and gore. (and a hasty escape from town while the party isn't entirely sure he didn't kill the girl).
She didn't talk about it the next time she came. The Warlock was rightfully terrified. That was a great (if a bit sudden) character evolution from "cool, I have powers from that magic chick" to "oh god that chick is crazy, what did I do ?". I'm really happy when I can explore that relationship like that.
(too bad I don't have anything planar going on, I'd love to steal the idea of a sleepwalker in Sigil... tons of potential here ^^)

That gives me an idea for justifying a hexadin:
A devotion paladin, meeting a weapon possessed by an entity from the shadowfell, talks with it and learns about its grey world. Moved by compassion and his will to make others happy, no matter who they are, he vows to never rest until he finds a way to meet the entity and show it colors.
While he travels the world, doing good while trying to find a way to fulfill his promise, he will keep colorful ribbons on his pact weapon, and will go on talking to it about what the sky looks like, or the trees, or the sun. Even though that might not necessarily help, is a child-like way to comfort the entity and a reminder of his promise.

    • @Vherstinae
      @Vherstinae 5 років тому +132

Nailed the quirky nature of Warlock, which is part of what makes them fun to play.
True enough, the stuff a Patron might make a Warlock do can seem pretty ridiculous...even if it has hidden meaning.
For instance, I had a tweaked Hexblade Warlock who was actually a Pact of the Tome...their "Book of Shadows" was an accounting book. They'd have to take notes of the deceased...alignments, names, and such...and track the info in their Tome, to register them for entering the Raven Queen's domain. Their "Accursed Spectre" feature would actually become a required thing they'd have to do daily...a quota to be fulfilled. A supernatural office worker of sorts.
Currently, I'm workshopping a character who is a best-selling writer, but who hasn't written anything in ages due to creative writer's block. Desperate, he begins adventuring in order to gain inspiration, and hears rumor of an ancient tome of wisdom, said to grant the reader creative perspective. Unbeknownst to him, it is a tome touched by the Far Realm, and the "creativity" it bestows threatens to drive the reader to madness. However, the writer asserts his sanity...by narrating everything around him in an attempt to ground him in reality...he's somewhere between the narrator of "Bastion" and the doom-saying Ancestor from "The Darkest Dungeon".

oh I used the doom saying ancestor from darkest dungeon as a villain in my campaign, along with all the other bosses and crap going on. his name was 'Dravus Stonecrest' then later, I played as him, great old one pact. best part is that I can do the voice so it was great. the few times they saw him (they were some of the workers digging beneath the manor) he was imposing, and powerful. they saw the creation of several bosses such as the necromancers (only implied until they fought) the siren (good friends with her till she died) the drowned crew, the hag, and the prophet (he was always fun to run as the party on their daily commute to work, would break him out of the stocks or heal a knife wound), they fought others such as the flesh and swine king along with brigand Vvulf, and the Shrieker. bandits paid to keep the rabble in line. till at last in the salt soaked crags beneath the lowest foundations beneath the manor, they unearthed that damnible portal and antediluvian evil. the party did escape, barely and left that maddened town behind.
later the dlcs came out and I had to use them. so I played him myself.

Hastur has had a long line of warlocks prophesied and once one dies he moved on to the next. The poor warlock, whenever utilizing the magic of his gracious patron, would literally act as a puppet as the foul king entered his body. Sometimes the king chose to do things with the spells the warlock had queued up that the unsuspecting warlock didn't plan for, and with an unrelenting passion for the sand of time and driving those around the puppet mad, you bet my poor warlock was very cautious and specific about what spells he used when. As it turns out, spilling the contents of your unholy dreams of Carcosa to your friends around a campfire is bad for avoiding psychic damage.

  • @DrLipkin
    @DrLipkin 6 років тому +221

In the book, the Hexblade Warlock's patron isn't a sentient weapon, its an entity that creates sentient weapons. The book also says that that entity grants its servants a portion of its power. I take this as an opportunity to say that when a Hexblade Warlock makes a pact weapon, they give that weapon sentience. And when they make a new weapon into their pact weapon, they transfer that sentience. This way you don't have to lug around a specific weapon that isn't as powerful as the shiny new toy you just found. Think of it as having a pet ghost that you can order to haunt different weapons.
Your patron is the smith, not the weapon. It makes sense that they would teach you to make weapons of your own.

    • @Xane875

@@Xane875 True. I just never see it described as it's actually written. People always just assume the Hexblade is the name of the Warlock, and that their patron is the weapon. And then they have the dilemma of being chained to one specific weapon the entire campaign.

      A. Help to collect things that might be able to fix or correct the damage done from the imperfect ritual. Like artifacts, legendary materials, or hidden tomes. The play might come across the secret to becoming a Lich late game (you know that is what they've always wanted lol) and could cut off the Lich by becoming a Lich themselves.
      B. After the Lich has groomed and trained the Warlock, he'll attempt to steal the Warlock's body. At such a late point in the game, the DM should have set the stage for the player to have a way to soul trap the Lich or even pull a Sasuke and actually take the Lich / Lich's power into himself like a battery. Forcing the Lich to share power.

She uh, didn't stay a former goddess forever. She uh, became the big bad of the campaign. She took her powers back from my character, leaving her a level 2 character. She then went on a trip to find the Raven Queen such that she could slay her former patron with her bare hands. She was as devoted a servant to her patron as she could ever hope to be, a devout worshipper and even lover. But then she was betrayed...
My current Warlock is bound by a home brew patron, The Perfect Chord, Which is basically just the concept of music itself. He was captured by mind flayers and a tadpole was inserted into him, to make a mindflayer out of him. But somehow, he didn't turn into a mindflayer, by fighting against the tadpole.
When the mindflayers noticed that the elf didn't transform, they just threw him in some Underdark River, he was just trash to them, just another body.
Eventually, after fighting day and night against the enemy in his head, the Elf overpowered the Tadpole and made a pact with it:
The Tadpole wasn't allowed to attack his mind further, in exchange he would feed the Tadpool by giving it Brainsubstance he extracts from dead Bodies. In addition, the Tadpool granted him Mindflayer-Powers to keep him, the Tadpools host, alive and ready to kill things to feed it.

    My custom Patron: The Archivist
The Archivist is an ancient entity predating the mortal use of writing. A being without clear definition, known mainly as a robed figured with a whispered voice. The Archivist collects the souls of devoted mortals, those who have sought a large amount of knowledge, and transforms them into books for their grand library.
From these practices, the first mortal libraries were constructed, the collection of written knowledge mimicking the patrons conversion of souls into books, the hushed whispers spoken within to avoid angering them. With time, the inspiration behind these halls of knowledge was forgotten, but at times, a bright spark, a hungry mind, draws the Archivists attention to the mortal plane, bringing offers of power to the willing.
Those who accept these offers soon find that the power is itself the price. The ability to remember all writing one has ever read quickly becomes a burden as birthdays are missed, friends are forgotten, and, in time, the warlocks memories exist only with two conditions: the memory that they are a warlock in service to the Archivist, and the vast knowledge acquired via their study.

It's one thing if you're just rolling up a random d00d and expanding their character as you go along, but if you actually have an overarching plan for your character's backstory prior to session zero then the DM's addition to that backstory will inevitably be at least slightly out of line with what you had in mind.

      The Fractured But Whole
The creature Ultear was(in the lore of my DM’s campaign) an ancient being of ice and rifts that was from the shadow fell. His original purpose was to stop a war between two war gods in which he killed them. After completing his purpose of creation, Ultear(the name he was given by Kikuri) change his physical into a blade made of unbreakable ice to slumber. But during this period of rest, those who wield the blade are given power that was leaked out by Ultear. After awakening, he realized that his power was used and abused to cause senseless chaos. Sadden by his action, he move into a waste land and transform it into a harsh tundra as final resting place. But his power still flow into the world and drive humanity to find and use his power, though all died from the harsh tundra or by killing each other for the blade. But for Kikuri, he was simply a sage who want to explore the tundra and its origin with his partner Fae. During their travel, they were ambush by cultist that needed bloods from an Eladrin. Though Kikuri survive, Fae was fatally wounded and use his last words to tell Kikuri to go on their exploration as a part of their legacy. Out of respect for Fae’s final words, Kikuri continue on with his mission, though now alone and depressed. When he discover a trail of frozen corpses of warriors. He felt the sudden urge to follow the rather ghastly sight and arrive at a temple made of ice. Once entered, Kikuri saw the blade( Ultear) of ice and touch, linking his mind to the ancient being and waking him up. Ultear, having slept for centuries, rather happy to see a living being and Kikuri was happy to have company. Through their hours of conversation, they came to agreement that as sign of friendship, they will one, so that they will never be alone ever again( this was I refer to as equal as they soon merge together as one and adopting a new name.) After completely their contract, all the snow and ice flow right into Kikuri’s scimitar and Fae’s scimitar( he dual wields), transforming the tundra into a bountiful grass land as they head out for a new adventures.
Ultear, though considered as an ancient being, was originally created as a living weapon used to kill gods, but given sentient as a fail safe to give him emotions of sympathy and sorrow.
That’s all i can say without having to rewrite 5 page of stories for them that I gave to my DM.

I made his character a halfling scholar of meteorology, who after getting a mysterious letter from his colleague about a means to control the weather-ANY weather, save for a divine intervention for the skies to change-ends up contacting and making a pact with Bokrug of the Lovecraftian mythos (a giant salamander being that sleeps at the bottom of a deep lake suspended in the realm of dreams).
And that’s why his character carries a necklace reliquary full of strange water, and has a unique ability to completely change the weather by just sacrificing some blood to a bowl of murky water.
Edit: I forgot that I wrote his characters backstory in the third person, such that being a warlock of Bokrug has forced the halfling scholar to do such terrible and strange things, they hardly recognize their life before this happened-a stranger in his own skin.

And because i'm a contrarion, that's started making me think two alternatives to somewhat subvert the role.
    1. A warlock who's patron is... Himself.
Maybe magically induced or otherwise, the character has a severe split personality. One side claiming powers or being incarnation of some High Power and the otherside being the normal player. The more regular human half claims that he's "working with" his alter ego to do the feats & magic he can do because, after all he's never had the training even if what he's doing would be what any regular, studied warlock could do.
    2. The whole Hexblade thing, but the hammer being a loud, stereotypical Holy Paladin Stereotype/Archetype Paragon while its wielder was just some poor shmuck of a peasant who picked it up.
Holy Hammer can control whatever arm is holding him and goes on long inspiring speeches and insists its wielder charge righteous into battle and protect the innocent... regardless of their concerns. "Avast! Yon village is beset by demons! Have at thee villainy!" "What?!! We just got here! We haven't e-... those are tiefling shopkeeps, we can't-!" *YANK*
"Unhand the maiden, foul beasts before I cleft thee twain!!" "She's attacking us too! Augh! Itsnotme, itstheweapon! Kill the mace! The mace!"

    Since I read what everyone else was sharing I wanted to throw my 2 cents in;
Me and my cousin home brewed a patron that was supposed to be like a fucked up mix of the Avatar state, Sauron, and Darkseid. The idea was supposed to be a slow ascension to becoming a Dark Lord. A new warlock would have to bring down the former Dark Lord's follower/acolytes and consume enough of their power to connect to a sort of all consuming aether that the Dark Lord would draw their power from.
Still playing through it and I'm really having fun. Feels like I'm progressing and evolving into an unstoppable force. This is my second character I've made and I'm relatively new to the game

I absolutely adore how much character and backstory warlocks come with just as a class. My roguelock I'm playing right now is a teifling with an elder thing pact. After a while of building and throwing character traits at them to see what fits I finally came up with this walking disaster. So they have no memory expect waking up in a ritual circle 5 years ago and has a serious addiction for stealing books. This is because that ritual was to make them a servent of The Great Race of Yith. These nerds can swap minds with other creatures across time and space and have the goal of trying to collect all the knowledge in the universe. So sometimes they "blacks out" and forgets long chunks of time but in reality thats just the Yith checking up on them and making him record down all the knowledge.
This isnt so much about his pact but if you like playing a social character go warlock every time. That roguelock is a conman that can never pull the same con twice. Plus add pathological liar, the fact that he doesnt know who he is, and the mask of many faces (at will disguise self) and you have a very fun character who is always a different person to each different person he talks to.
Plus if your dm allowes it. Friends + awakend mind (+ the actor feat if you want to go the extra mile). They can't be aggressive at you for casting the spell on them if they don't know who cast the spell and who is giving them orders. Plus with actor you can get them mad at someone else.

    My warlocks.
    Protector Aasimar/Fiend Pact
Human father sold his soul to a Succubus, but offered to give his first born son instead. Unbeknownst to him, he already had a son with a prostitute, and the Succubus goes to collect. But she's repelled by the son's guardian angel. So rather than claiming the son outright, the Archdevil that the Succubus works for gifts the son power to try and tempt him into falling. If he falls, the Arch Devil can claim him. The warlock literally has an angel whispering in one ear, and a devil in the other.
    Half-Elf /Arch Fey
An Elvish lord lusts for power, and makes a pact with an Arch Fey. The Arch Fey is pleased with the deal, and sends his servant to bequeath this power. The servant goes to the lord's house, and sees the lord's wife in bed with a man. The servant assumes that this man must be the one who made a pact with his master, and so he gives this man the agreed upon power. Of course you can see where this is heading. The man in bed with the lord's wife is not the lord. He has now slept with the lord's wife, and stolen power that should rightfully belong to the lord. The Arch Fey finds this hysterical, and despite the power having been given to the wrong person, he holds the lord to the deal that was struck. The newly minted warlock goes on the run to escape the lord's wrath.
    Human/Hexblade
An old veteran has retired, his fighting days are done. Age has robbed his hands of much of their strength. But the man's daughter in law recently died in childbirth, and his son has many gambling debts. The son could be killed if he doesn't come up with money soon. The son comes home with a sword that he hopes to sell for some coin, but suspecting that the sword was stolen, the veteran takes the sword from his son. When he does, he hears a voice in his head. A long dead warrior king possesses the blade. The warrior offers the veteran power in exchange for the use of his body. The veteran asks for a demonstration first. The warrior and the veteran exchange places, with the veteran existing in the sword while the warrior enjoys having mobility for the first time in an age. It's at this time that the son's creditors have the misfortune to arrive and demand payment. The son offers the sword to them, but when they attempt to claim it, the warrior slays them. With gusto. The warrior turns on the son, about to kill him, when the veteran agrees to the terms, on the condition that he gets to choose who the warrior kills. The veteran leaves home to protect his son and granddaughter, and to make money to provide for them.
    Yuan-ti Pureblood/Great Old One
Knowledge is power, and to gain power you need to offer something in return. She offered her name, and he took it. From everyone. No one would ever be able to think of it again. But that wasn't enough. So she offered her voice, ripping her tongue from her head to ensure that she would never speak his secrets. This impressed him, and he gifted her with a servant of her own. The Gazer spoke for her now, her former voice emitting from its twisted maw. Sometimes you could almost forget that her lips never moved, but then the Gazer would sputter and fall silent, refusing to offer power that was not earned.
    Dragonborn/Celestial
Even gods get horny. And when that happens, occasionally an offspring is born. Or in this case, hatched. She was the first platinum dragon other than her father to exist in all of living memory. And if the followers of Tiamat ever found out about her, she'd be hunted until she could be sacrificed in her aunt's name. She had to stay secret. Hidden. But she was still a dragon. She still had a dragon's desires. A dragon's greed. She needed treasure. And being unable to get it herself, she needed a servant. She didn't yet have a domain to call her own. but she still had enough power to share with one follower. And so she marked him, his scales transforming to match hers. He would bring her treasure, and she would grant him the power necessary to attain it.

      Human/Fiend pact.
He was born with incredibly powerful psychic powers. His parents abandoned him as a child, and a large group of demons went after him, seeking to use his powers for themselves. He fended them all off, grew up on his own, and developed his psychic powers to large extents. Eventually, he became aware of all layers of reality, and used his psychic powers to mentally battle and enslave the elder Gods, and controls their dreams to affect reality and fuel his magic. The conditions are that he has to make frequent intelligence checks to keep his otherworldly slaves, and cannot speak with other warlocks, as exposure to other patrons can weaken his control over the elder Gods.

    Norann, and Katia
an artist who retired due to the fact that his last painting, his magnum opus, a portrait of a woman he dreamed of, was so perfect that the painting was given life, and as it turns out, this woman was a lesser demon, a devourer of dreams.
now given physical form with Norann, and him having poured so much of his soul into the painting, they are bound as one beating heart, and as such, must protect eachother.
eventually, Norann will discover with Katias teachings of the magical properties of dreams, that albiet unexpected and almost impossible with mortals, He used that energy to bring a painting to life, and that given time and training, he could do even more. unfortunately Norann retired not only because of this event, but this was supposed to be his last painting, as he is ill with a rotting mind.
the end of his adventure lies with his true last painting, a beautiful forest clearing, with a path leading deeper in.
those who owned it always say that they can almost see the leaves move, one man says that one night in his study, he swore he could see two figures sitting just out of view in the path, but the next night it was gone.
this painting bears no title, and as such, has grown increasingly mysterious along with all of its owners telling many tales of it.
it is now held at the Gallery in his home town, many have come to see it and solve its mysteries, but unfortunately tragedy struck as the painting went missing, along with all other paintings in the gallery, even now the villagers have begun to disappear as well.
your party, as your reputation has reached a local guild, has been asked to look into it.
youve been asked to stay in the now empty village, to wait and take care of whatever you may encounter, or atleast report what you saw.

Great video! Will add some of these concepts to steal later.
Also to steal: A concept from the comic RatQueens. A Cthulu worshipping warlock from a cult of Cthulu worshipping warlock. The big catch. They're 'pact' with Cthulu is a spell that keeps Cthulu contained and asleep, and they're siphoning off power of the great tentacled monster by casting spells and rituals in his name, thus keeping him asleep. An added complication to this for DnD is looming insanity (cuz you're tapped into an elder god) and every now and then having to do some random probably awful thing as dictated by the DM. It'd be the equivalent of either you effectively being assigned a character in Cthulu's dreams and thus having to work with dream logic or doing the equivalent of having to veeeeerrrry carefully fluff a pillow on a cosmic level to keep the terrible thing comfortable and asleep.

I made a Archfey/Faerie Dragon Dragonborn Warlock. He was originally named Torinn Kaedyllon and was a member of the proud gold-skinned Kaedyllon clan. Then one day a strange defect manifested in him. His scales changed from golden to multiple colors such as teal, blue and green. His father discovered that his new appearance was that he was descended from an Ancient Faerie Dragon. He was exiled from the clan, seeking to make a name for himself. Shortly after his departure he relied on his cunning and wit to make quite the name for himself as a mischief-maker. Then one day he was visited by something far from his mind. An Ancient Faerie Dragon that claimed to be his ancestor. He was so proud of his descendant for the mischief and felt he would do his progenitor proud and so Torinn became Torinn Sheer and was brought into a pact with his ancestor in agreement that he would make a clan to honor his ancestor.

Pact ideas that I think should be official:
Pact of the Archmage - You are the apprentice of a powerful spellcaster. This would basically be the "witch" subclass for D&D, if Archfey wasn't that already. You get to learn forbidden magic from ancient times. Move mountains, crack the surface of the earth, blot out the sun, and cast Wish.
Pact of the Greatwyrm - You have gotten the attention of an ancient immortal dragon. Briefly turn into a dragon, collect treasure for your patron's hoard, and become immune to piercing damage.
Pact of the Noble - What about a different kind of powerful entity? Your job is to kill your boss's enemies. Roguelock, you're a Roguelock. Respect the hustle.
Pact of the Coven - Witches, AND multiple patrons? Sign me up.
    This was a silly idea.

When I read the entry about Ki'rin that people are usually awed by the sight of them, it gave me the idea for ~some guy~ (a pretty alright dude), who while stepping away from the crowd at a village festival for a quite moment just happened to walk up alongside a Ki'rin that was overlooking the event.
The Ki'rin assumes the guy realised they were here and that they'd approached to make a pact so they can help work to make the world better or fight evil or something more effectively using magic, but truth is the guy was just oblivious and doesn't really know how to respond to the elephant sized golden scaled stag he's abruptly realised is right next to him.
Some dialogue happens that he doesn't really hear or take in because he's distracted by the sight of the Ki'rin, so he's mostly nodding along or making noises of agreement as you do, and shortly after the Ki'rin leaves. Next morning onwards, dude's got magic (celestial pact), isn't sure where it came from but has a fair guess, and has to figure out how it works & what to do with it.
From the Ki'rin's perspective it's basically given him a job interview and rallied him to the cause, and somehow didn't manage to catch on that the guy had no idea what was happening.

    Pact of the eye:
Siphon power away from higher powered beholders like overseers and hive-mothers. Instead of Cantrips, warlock gets beholder eye abilities. The number of eye powers they can possess start at two (one of them is the anti magic ray), and go up by one every other level, adding an extra pupil to either of the warlock's eyes, or better yet, eyes start sprouting out of the warlock's flesh. Eventually, the warlock gets to wield the power of imagination that beholders posses.

Here's some custom patrons from my games!
    Kravitz, the Grim Reaper:
    Patron type: The Raven Queen
Creature type: Shadar-Kai Lich (specifically baelnorn)
Backstory: Kravitz was a shadar-kai who lived in the Shadowfell, who aspired to become a musical conductor. However, after the lich-god Vecna attacked his hometown of New Shadar-Kaiington, his life went a different direction. He defeated Vecna in a duel, before he was sent to Ravenloft, and he traveled to the Fortress of Memory, where he met with the Raven Queen, and was deemed worthy enough to become a death demigod and baelnorn lich under her, and he would chase down necromancers and undead from there on. (Also, at some point in this, the death demigod Myrkul sorta died. Not quite sure on the details). For more of this character's life, listen to The Adventure Zone, because I took this character from that podcast and added that backstory and him being a baelnorn lich.
    His warlock: Blake De'Monte (Eladrin)
How they met: In the year 1072 DR, during a visit to the up and coming city of Baldur's Gate, Blake was captured by a cult to Myrkul (not knowing he's dead, and yet somehow still getting some power from him), sending his soul to the Astral Plane. It was there he met the Grim Reaper (he has not learned his first name).
The Terms: Since Blake was not supposed to die yet, the Reaper sent him back (accidentally 400 years later), as completely alive, as well as with warlock powers. When he returned, he was task with taking down the cult that sacrificed him. However, once this has been done (which it has literally in the session I just ran), the Reaper can kill him once again. However, Blake will be given some cool options for his afterlife.
    -----
    Omorry the Delirious:
Patron type: The Great Old One
    Creature Type: Lovecraftian parasite
    His warlock: William (human)
How they met (I didn't discuss this with my player but this is how I imagine it, and she'll probably agree): William was likely an ordinary man, until an meteorite crashed near his home. When he checked what it was, something disgusting pounced out of it, and assimilated itself in William's body.
The Terms: Omorry (or Odie, as William affectinotely nicknames him) does give William magical help. However, he is still a parasite. He has made William very frail, due to absorbing his nutrients. He also can punish William if he does not follow Omorry's instructions (for example, he once asked William to bring him near a pile of ashes of a former orc, so that he could lick them up. When William did not comply, Omorry gave him a cramp as a warning).
    ----
    Merlin, the lich-son of Asmodeous:
    Patron type: The Fiend
    Creature type: Cambion lich
Backstory: A thousand or so miles from the Sword Coast lays the British Isles, and on some of them, the kingdom of Camelot. Ten thousand or so years ago, Asmodeous descended on the isles and had a child with an acolyte before taking his leave. When the baby was born, however, a cleric from the church immediately blessed it, transforming it from a lawful evil cambion to a lawful good tiefling. To combat this infernal presence, the good gods (idk which) gave the illegitimate son of King Uther Pendragon, Arthur, the destiny to draw a legendary sword from a stone, be gifted the even more legendary sword Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake, Nimue, and go on to become a good, powerful, and legendary king. Merlin, now a powerful wizard and advisor to King Uther Pendragon, was fine with this, despite his infernal heritage, and went on to become Arthur's mentor and wise advisor. And so, the events of the Legend of King Arthur unfolded, changed somewhat to fit into this setting. However, when the tale ended, a divine experiment began. These same events, altered slightly, would repeat, though somewhat altered. Basically, think the Legend of Zelda. During each cycle, some figures, such as Merlin and Nimue, they would have some recall of previous cycles, and would more or less be able to hone their power over multiple life. However, on the ninth cycle of this, Asmodeous made a major change. He made it so that Merlin would never be blessed after his birth, keeping him a lawful evil cambion. Merlin would now go on to corrupt Arthur, and turn his rule into one of bloodshed and pollution. However, the ninth cycle was merely planned as a warm up. Merlin would not be too corrupting on this cycle, and things would go mostly the same as always, and the tenth cycle is when the corruption would begin. However, things did not go according to plan. Nimue received a premonition in which she saw what was planned for the tenth cycle, and because of this, when Arthur came for his gift, she slew him and ran away, leading to Merlin setting his evil plans into full swing. He spoke with Arthur's soul, and promised to turn him into a death knight and make him King once again, if he would be willing to sell his soul and every other Cameloteon to Merlin, and then let Merlin bring Camelot to Hell. Arthur agreed. I'm not sure if this happened before or after this event, but Merlin eventually became a lich in this cycle.
His warlock: Morgana Le Fay (NPC)
How they met: Morgana is the daughter of King Uther Pendragon, and she studied under Merlin in every cycle. In most cycles, she goes rogue, becoming a witch, though she shows her goodness in the end when she brings King Arthur to Avalon to die. However, in the ninth cycle, she did not need to go rogue to do evil, as Merlin lead her in it this time around. However, she is beginning to doubt her master and his intentions.

Minor quibble: “Sigil” (the city of doors) is pronounced with a hard “G,” not a “j” sound as in the literary/archaic term for a symbol (sigil). Really enjoyed the video! This is *by far* the best explanation of warlocks I’ve found on UA-cam.

on one of my old games i was playing with some of my friends me turning out to be right about a single stupid word that had become my catchphrase went into a glorious upward spiral that wound up turning me into the patron of one of my friend's characters who took one level into warlock, so that was a very very fun campaign for me

I doubt you look at these videos' comments after so long, but you're a seriously creative and generous dude. I'm building a world from absolute scratch (New Deities, new reasons for Abberations, New Calendars, all new cities, new rules for godhood...) and your videos are seriously invaluable to helping me make this world somewhere my friends and I can adventure for a long time with many campaigns and characters.
I wish I had more money for you to shut up and take.

I have an idea of a warlock, but I don't know how to do it. Essentially, Sigmund was kidnapped by cultists and was about to be sacrificed. However, Sigmund repeats the chant and the being turns on them. I can go two ways with this.
Way one: The being is a lawful neutral deity representing brutal justice. They thought that they were being offered criminals, but the cultists were just getting any old person, and happened to get quite a few criminals. Sigmund made them realize this, and Sigmund was given power in exchange for murdering criminals and remaining cultists. They choose to make him into a Bladelock (not that big of a fan of being a patron to a sentient weapon), as it fits his skillset much better than clerics or paladins (He's not too strong, but rather stealthy and dexterous). This is my preference, and I already have someone in mind for the patron. The problem is that they are a god/greater deity, and that's not really how patrons seem to work
Way two: The being is a horrid Great Old One. They immediately take Sigmund's offer to consume the souls of the cultists. They then make an avatar and approach Sigmund. The avatar explains that they were amused by Sigmund's boldness to do what he did. They then state that those souls were an incredible meal, and explains that more corrupted and evil souls seem to taste better. So, the being was willing to exchange a bit of power to Sigmund for more evil souls. Thus, Sigmund becomes a GOOlock

In one session, my party's warlock made a patron pact with a Gibbering Mouther named Grutheliout the Grueling, who has it's multiple voices work in telepathically in unison. It's ability would incite sensations of malaise, enfeeblement, and extreme depression upon mainly humanoid victims, luring them into a state of low security to where our warlock has some perceivable control over their actions. One time, he cracked the will of a military despot to a point where he leaped John Woo style in front of a firing squad in training the next morning.
Grutheliout thrives by inspiring suffering and emotional debilitation, demanding the voices of the weak willed and broken souls.

This reminded me of a character I played a little while ago. She was a pact of the Archfey warlock, and her patron was her sister who got her soul merged with an archfey in a failed ritual by a bunch of evil wizard cultists. That was fun.

I came to this video because I wanted to play a warlock that makes a pact with the DM and cripples people purely by giving them existentialism via information they aren't supposed to have.

I did basically what you described with the "Great Old One" patron here.
My Warlock was a scribe that lived in a monastery, and transcribed tomes. He ended up unearthing a hidden chamber with "That which must not be known" sealed up in it, and woke up two weeks later, having gone on an insanity-fueled rage that burned away all memory of his previous life.
"Now" he travels the land, on the run from a mysterious cult that can be anyone, anywhere, Their only calling card an Identical Silver Ornamentation that they all wear somewhere on their person. The cult wants him for non-specific reasons, and were flavored to have a large emphasis on how they could be suitably abrupt in their entering the situation. To describe it properly, if you remember the scene in the Matrix where Neo is running at the end of the movie, runs through an old lady's apartment, and right as his attention comes off the old lady at her stove, you see her knife embed itself in the doorframe next to Neo's head, and he turns around to find she's morphed into Agent Smith? Like that, except they don't actually morph into a different person, they just noticably have a Silver Ornament on them suddenly. Like buying from a fishmonger, you look away for a moment, and suddenly you're dodging his cleaver and he has a tiny silver badge on his collar.
He's also still half crazy, and trying to piece together "something" from the bits and pieces of his annihilated memories. He sees patterns and spirals in everything, and sometimes they lead him in the right direction when all other paths have failed him. My Idea for the "Something" he's trying to piece together is actually the key piece of knowledge that would allow the Dead Elder God to resurrect itself into actual existence again, and the Spirals and patterns he sees are the remnants trying to urge him towards this conclusion.
His "Pact Magic" was really just a spark to ignite his latent magical ability, and I made him really good at Rituals, (being a scribe) so he had Tome of Shadows and a bunch of stuff to support that. Also I made him really paranoid and good at making a runner of it.

The way I have it in my campaign is that a warlock pact is sort of like being an independent contractor for the patron. It brings you in for jobs here and there, and in exchange it teaches you eldritch magic that the warlock couldn't learn otherwise (as I have that witchcraft and other kind of magic like wizardry are similar but inherently different). This arrangement can be broken at any time at no loss of power to the warlock, but at that point they are unable to gain any more warlock levels because they no longer have their patron to teach them. This would also be how some people could multiclass and just dip into warlock for a few levels or pick up the Arcane Initiate feat for warlock cantrips; they made a deal with a patron for a simple one off job and then went their separate ways.
This isn't necessarily entirely DnD canon, but it's how I chose to interpret it for the campaign I'm running.
Of course, there are also deathlocks from Mordenkainen's, in which a warlock breaks their pact and their patron transforms them into an undead servant, but that's typically only in extreme cases.
