- The Life and Times of Edward the Elder (c874-924 AD), King of the Anglo-Saxons, son of King Alfred the Great and Conqueror of the Danes.
Edward's reign was arguably equally as important as his more illustrious father's with Edward building on the successes of Alfred and ultimately driving the Danes to submission (with the help of his sister Æthelflæd), ruling all of England south of the River Humber.
Edward's reign was far from smooth sailing, having to see off a challenge to his throne early on and having to manage the predations of the Danes and Norse invaders. This video charts the life and campaigns of Edward the Elder, warrior-king and forger of England.

Brilliant account of an undeservedly overlooked architect of a united England. I also appreciated the attn you give to Aethelflaed, an exceptional early female builder of much of what came to be the English nation-state.

Yeah, terrible portrayal of Edward, and Wessex in general, in the TV series. Just as well there was a Danish Northumbrian, and a random Irish warrior, to win the battles which made England. Lucky too that the Mercians could come to save Winchester! 🤔😳

I understand artistic licence, but really!
It's a familiar Cornwell trope. All the real-life doers are either idiots, untrustworthy, petty or downright bad, and it falls to the lowly outsider and his sidekick to get things done.
This is about bigging up his real life ancestor in Northumberland, and having an Irishman at the heart of things, for the American market. I get it in Sharpe, because it does shine a light on that great asset, the British ranker and the fact that many were actually from Ireland.
I admit the Uhtred books are much better than the screen portrayal, (pretty much always the case) and I enjoy his writing, but have always found the true story of Aelfred, Edward, Aethelflaed and Aethelstan would make fantastic material for an historically accurate (within reason) effort.
Aelfred does not look like the man who led the charge up Ashdown, against the Danish army, with only his personal troops before his elder brother joined in.
Even the sets and costumes do no favours. Winchester, the capital of the West Saxons looks like a Monty Python mediaeval village. (It was a Roman city, admittedly not what it had been but still...). The West Saxons carry rectangular wicker shields and dress like cheap fantasy clod hoppers. I understand that it is necessary to differentiate between them and the vikings but in reality, they would have looked pretty similar.
What's with the "Ethelstan" , and "Efferwich"? Eoforwic would have been pronounced eyorvorwic (Pretty close to Jorvik of the Danes) and Aethelstan starts with a hard "A" same as Aelfred (ae being the hard a sound). Small irritations maybe, but it jars.
As an American, the last kingdom brought me here. Thank you for the great explanations. As a US history buff it is very cool find out how the motherland England came about in the early years.
The 1800s’ Irish Potato Famine and the Italian Diaspora brought me here, not the British.

He was referring to a tv show called "The Last Kingdom" the show goes threw the time of king Alfred to his son king Edward, and the kingmaker that supported their claims.
It's no wonder Edward chose Malden. There were halls and palaces, an excellent swimming pool and one of the most attractive bonus-incentive schemes for industrial development in the city. Only 15 miles from excellent Thames-side docking facilities, and within easy reach of the proposed M25.

These 3--ALFRED EDWARD ATHELSTAN The most honorable & courageous Father Son and Grandson Monarchs of our people. They simply took care of business like Saxons. Perhaps we will be seeing their fighting spirit revealed in our people here soon.
I cant think of three post conquest monarchs within England or Scotland who rulled consecutively and were so consistently effective. Due to there being regencies, or other monarchs in between. The Tudors in England are the closest, but had Edward VI regency, Jane Gray short reign, and Mary I before Elizabeth I took over. In Scotland maybe a period of the Canmoores prior to the failure of that line. But that is also not clear cut. It is a rare occurance to have such successful rulers sequentially and uninterupted by failure.

Funny how Edward the Elder is one of England's least remembered Kings, yet he was one of the best.

People are aware of pre 1066, but as far as I am aware post 1066 was always what history lessons focus on in UK schools, with more recent history being the focus as you get older. I.E less than 100 years ago. So no surprise that someone like Edward would be overlooked.

Just something I was wondering when watching the video.
I just finished watching The Last Kingdom. I’d like to read the history of this event.
Question: given this information, why is king Edward longshanks called “The first” when he is in fact the third king named “Edward”
Chroniclers and historians closer to the time tended to distinguish kings like this "Edward, son of Henry," though as Edward of Caernarfon and then Edward of Windsor came after, "Edward, son of Edward," may have been confusing so they counted from Longshanks on.
They also counted from the Conquest onwards, as the Plantagenet kings and beyond count from the side who won in 1066 not from the defeated Anglo-Saxon line of kings.
Edward Longshanks was actually the forth king of that name: the first being the Elder, the second being Edward the Martyr (Reign: 975-978 AD) and the third being Edward the Confessor (Reign: 1042-1066 AD).
Though... if we're being picky we could indeed only count the Martyr and the Confessor as kings of the English, as technically the Elder never took (as far as we know) the title "King of the English," but was styled "King of the Anglo-Saxons," like his father Alfred the Great.
Depending on how we count, Longshanks was either third or fourth then. 🙂

@@HistoryHubChannel Very detailed and informative answer to such shoddy arrogance. A king of England is a king of England. The saxon kings should not have to take a back seat to Norman descendants. History should remove this stain of arrogance. As long as a king is said to have ruled over a unified England (even if the geography differed from their Norman counterparts) they should not be disrespected in this manner. Longshanks himself should have corrected this 700+ years ago! Can we not do better? Good question from Bens....!
I think the UK made a mistake by only numbering kings from the Norman conquest of England. Due to the UK being created by a union of crowns. Otherwise William IV would be William V, due to William the lion of Scotland existing and Edward VII would be Edward XI with Edward VIII being Edward XII due to the three pre conquest kings and Edward Ballio existing. Probably a retroactivity issue due to the act of union being over 100 years after the ascention of James VI.
