- Pro Tip Tuesday. DON'T PUT SO MUCH CHALK IN. It'll slow you down and kill the gears, especially if the line gets wet. I buy these @MilwaukeeTool boxes from the local @HomeDepot .

The best way to fill a chalk line is to unwind the ENTIRE line, fill it full of chalk (I mean like full full), and wind the line back in until either you can't crank the handle, or the box is so full of chalk and line it won't roll up anymore. Then you simply throw it out, buy a new one, and do it all over again.

Always worked best for, fill it full, pull the line out with the tip down, reel back up.
Never seen someone pull all the line out then add the chalk.
Tajima chalk boxes are also nice to use. I have the colored boxes match the color chalk within them
They are best chalk lines ever I have a few of them too an the self winding one also
The Milwaukee ones aren't bad but now that I have a tajima I can never go back
I used one of their ink lines for awhile because of how thin it was and since it was ink you didn’t have to hit it with hairspray to keep it from smudging.
I used it for my start/straight line for wood floor installs so the spans were long enough to make it difficult to work with but when it worked well it snapped a nice thin line.
@@michaelgnafakis430 I've never actually used an ink line, I've always been kinda scared of mess and permanence.
@@liamvincent8066unfortunately your fears were my reality. The sponge that held the ink seemed like the weak point. It would probably work well in a shop or 10-15 foot lengths it would probably do well. Mine also had to survive a work van in California summer heat.
I like to use the Tajima ink lines to lay out stair railing installations, because when the walls are painted I can still see where my lines were.

Did this to my first chalk box. Lesson learned. That was 40 years ago. I now pull at about 35 feet of line out, fill it halfway, then reel it in. You can ajways add more chalk if need be. I also recently treated myself to a decent box and chalk instead of the usual big box fare. A worid of difference.

@@bobbygetsbanned6049 red oxide? it marks more clearly and doesn’t come off nearly as easily. a saw blade can blow the chalk away. nothing worse than marking something and then you can’t see it when you try to cut

@@ProfessionalKafir yeah I don't get that either, I showed up to a new company I was already experienced in with new clothes and the delivery drivers were all clowning me saying I won't last, I turned out to be one of the best workers there getting all the best commercial jobs. Company gave me tons of work shirts too and I took care of them, I'd just ask for new ones whenever they were got messed up lol
Ill only do this if its raining, youre gonna get a way crisper line if you get it moist, fill it to the top, add a teaspoon of water or coffee and roll it up
Yeah! Tiny bit of moisture makes for a solid line. I agree! If you make it too damp I expect it will mess up the workings. But I’ve not had a problem in a couple of years and they are only cheap.
I spritz a shot of WD-40 inside to keep the gears rollin smooth. 😅
DONT DO THIS!!!!! just put a little bit in and use it like you would. might have to redo your lines but after a day of laying out it will be good. you will thank me later

Used them for many many years. They can't handle any moisture, the gears gum up and break.
Rapid reels are plastic gears that always wear out and strip. My old metal box from the early 2000's is still winding while you're skipping

Never let out all that line when loading a chalk box it can cause the line to set in the spool to loose and cause backlash like a fishing reel
That's right. And if your days consist of doing a bunch of lines you may want to tie two together so your buddy and you don't have to keep walking back and forth😅. Works best snapping across apartment walls for straight trusses.
Hey I’m using a chalk line for the first time, it’s a 100 ft Milwaukee one, filled it with the bottle it came with. But for some reason it only goes out like 6 feet and then gets stuck, the weird thing is, at this point I can reel it any direction and it starts reeling in, any ideas? I’m thinking of taking it apart to see what’s going on
yep, too much chalk likely or sometimes rolling it fast the line tangles inside. That's why I always do this for a first time.
Try dumping all the chalk out first. If that doesn’t work proceed with taking it apart. They are very simple to fix.

I remember those little aluminum and steel chalk lines with the 1:1 ratio. Then the string broke ½ a dozen times, and the string was only eight feet long. I still have a few of those.

I love my father's old metal chalk lines so good
A chalk box is the one tool I despise using. But I have to have one. I usually buy the cheapest one I can find because they don’t last long. Then, first thing I do is cut off about 20’ of line. That gives me more room to be able to fill the chalk box and it doesn’t seem to knot up as easy. But they still do. I always buy 2 or 3 at a time because they knot up so fast. The geared chalk boxes break even faster. Stick with simple and cheap with this cursed tool.
They may be cursed but chalk lines are so useful it's hard to hate them. Cutting off 20' to fit more chalk is a good idea, I might try that.
I used to use the gear driven like the one you’re playing with but I had too many complications not due to over chalk but just everything about it would go south and it turned into a $30 turd that got tossed in the scrap pile I went back to the old original because it’s been around for 100 years or more wear these gear driven ones I’ve been around for like maybe 20 but that’s my personal preference

Depends what kinda work you’re doing. I snap lines on plywood all the time. Easier to do by yourself than draw along straight edge.

I definitely have a bad habit of overfilling my new chalk line when it’s brand new and it never winds up as smooth as anyone else but I never learn 😂

Wait what if you filled it with graphite powder. i assume it probably doesn't stick well as a chalk line is not rubbed on but snapped but it is a lubricant on the gears

I like hooking something and walking away then loading chalk then walking back to the hook while winding keeps the gremlins off your line as for over loading on a new chalk box there is no such thing chalk is light and fluffy

I find most people don’t have enough chalk in there, load it up I say.
I remember way back then some newbie jerk loaded my tool pouch with chalk. He had no idea what he did, for weeks every time I put my hand in my pouch it came out blue I had to let my veteran pouch go and buy a new one it made me so mad. So I was immature and taught him a lesson by pissing all over his pouch then filling it with chalk
