I have been a fire fighter for 44 years. I had 2 uncles in the fire service. When I was 15 there was a family of 5 that perished in a house fire. I asked my uncles WHY? They said they didnt have the correct of enough equipment. I wanted to see if I could help change that. I got hired on the department,I got trained and soon after three years I became chief. I was fortunate to get new gear for all the firefighters, increase membership, build a new firehouse and purchase 2 new trucks. I always say right place right time. I had a wonderful relationship with the town and township and great personnel t work with.

Firefighter was supposed to be my first job in the Air Force, but I left for BMT early and became a fighter jet mechanic instead. Retired from service 23 years later and went on a ride-along with a FF/P brother in law; was instantly hooked and went volunteer. This was a year ago, got brought on full-time this past December. I’m a month from turning 44. If you can hack it, it is never too late!
Love the channel, Mike! I still have lots to learn about this job and the videos help immensely.

Hello Air Force, I took our firefighting essentials course at fifty five years old. That was eighteen years ago, and today, I still drive our engine, and rescue. Last week I helped pump out several basements. There is always something a volunteer of any age can do.

I have been fairly lost in life ever since graduating high school, I felt I was rushed to college and did not have a solid footing in a direction in life. I’ve been treading through college as an it major but I have been really lost and I was looking into trade and emergency jobs. While looking at them I have become really connected to Firefighting , I have always admired the way of life a firefighter lives and respected their dedication to the community they protect. I have always been a hands on person and never a book Person. I feel I will have trouble trying to break this to my parents since if I do decide on this path I will be first gen firefighter in my whole family and leaving college to pursue this career. I’ve watched your videos so much recently and have learned a lot from them. Thank you for providing this type of information and I hope you continue to do so.

Funny you should say that, I really connect with this story. Went into college after high school, into something i hated for many reasons. Began looking into trades, since my dad and brother are electricians. I would be the first in my family to go into any sort of first responder career... Originally looking into law enforcement, but i started to realize that i don't need to carry a firearm to help people. Thus, my mind went to firefighting. Ever since i made that decision about 2 months ago, I've been learning from firefighter friends of mine, working out, and just building myself up physically and mentally. My parents were the ones who aided me in my first responder decision, and they explained how proud they would be to have a son go into something like that.... I hope you decide to go for it, and i hope you have all the strength possible to tell your family.

You aren’t alone, it’s so many young people like you trying to figure out what is the right path to become successful and achieve your personal goals🤗
My youngest son is 23 years old and he feels the same way, very uncertain about his future and he can’t make his mind about what he really wants to do.

My husband worked for the government for 35 years unfortunately things are much different now.

I really do, im a 16 year old girl. I am constantly being asked what i want to be when I leave school. I always made up an answer for a job that gave a lot of money. Truthfully none of these jobs interested me at all I genuinely thought that if I'm going to apply for a job when I leave school it'll have to be one that gave me enough money. But then I started seeing these videos on my foryoupage on tiktok and genuinely I was truly mesmerised by how these firefighters are risking their lives to save people and help put out fires, I have this feeling in my chest whenever i see firefighters doing their job that i just want to be like them someday and I'm going to try working towards that dream, I would appreciate any tips to how the job works and what i would have to do before joining because I am currently looking into it, thanks for this awesome video by the way I was wondering what I was going to say when i finally can say why i want to become a firefighter but i know now what I want to say ❤

@ephraimjamesglick2197 absolutely man, if we could message directly on here that would be better but basically sometime in April they don't have a exact date yet but the test will open. You have to go to pittsburgh pa careers, essentially find the website for what the city is hiring for. Apply for firefighter. Then we will have a civil service test and a pt test on a later date, if you UA-cam pittsburgh firefighter test 2016 on UA-cam it will give you the full pt test

I've loved firefighting since I was five years old, but I don't know why I love it. When I was 8 years old, my house burned down and my family and I quickly fled. Within two minutes the fire engines arrived, and after that I felt safe. That's why I wanted to be a firefighter in the future. this is a real story so I should tell them if they asked me ?

I joined the fire department because I wanted to do medicals. Then the chief gave me a 2 1/2 inch hose to clean the floors and it was the 2nd time in my life I fell in love with big hoses.
Previously, I had lived in a decent sized city and getting into the fire service or becoming or EMT training was highly competitive. I was discouraged and put it on a list of dreams I'd never see. The I moved to a small town and the department was desperate for bodies and said they'd train me if I joined. My dad was volunteer for 40 years, and I loved how he would just drop everything to help anybody, and knew exactly what to do. He also had some Badass stories and a lot of tragic ones. I wanted to be like him, and be the person others could rely on when something scary happens. I am an EMR and I'm currently in fire school. I've gotten to do things I've only dreamed of. And it scratches that itch of mine that wanted to be Badass. Even if I'm just a dork with a love for big hoses.

I have no idea but I thought if the car missed the delivery van it may have hit them, might have missed too, but it played on my mind. Next recruitment cycle I applied. I told them that had they been involved then I would have expected someone else to turn up and deal with it. So if I can expect someone else to help then I should be willing to reciprocate. I’m incredibly nervous about my chances of being hired on as a fireman in my city. It’s always been my dream to be one and it dates back to seeing a fireman save my dads life as he bled out nearly dying. I’m 22 years old and I recently graduated college with an unrelated degree. My friend on the force told me last year the city had 600 applicants and they only had 42 positions to fill. Those are terrible odds. It’s entry level, no experience required so there’s obviously going to be a ton of intrigue amongst the community.
My question is, how can I best prepare myself to stand out? Hiring process begins in about a month, I’m 5’11, 154 and I’ve been working at both my cardiovascular and muscular fitness like a maniac for about seven months in preparation. I’ve been studying the study guide as well. Closer to the interview process I’m going to rehearse that with some friends.
If I don’t get hired on this year, should I go and get my EMT and try again next year? Keep in mind this will be provided in my city’s fire academy if I get selected

    Hey Mike,
In the fire department, in order to become a Fire Chief, would you have to (seems like a silly question) literally start all the way from probationary firefighter, then firefighter, Lt, Capt, Batt Chief, Asst Chief, and then Chief?
Also you did mention in your fire department ranks video that usually you have to be a Lt. Before you can be a Capt. But not always. Would you also have to be a non-officer firefighter before you can be an officer rank?
The reason I ask is because in the military, officer ranks don’t start out as grunts. Not sure if the fire department is the same way.
Would be very interested to know.

Good question- short answer is generally you will have to get experience as a line firefighter before you can be an officer. I’ve never heard of a direct to officer program although that may exist somewhere (kind of like joining the army and going straight to OCS). You can skip ranks (eg. go from Lt. to Chief) depending on the needs of the department and the structure-I know of a few people who have done that. A lot of departments will require that you’re a line firefighter for a certain amount of time before you can test to be an officer (eg. 5 years) but again - it all really can depend on the department. Hope that answers your question!

I want to become a fire fighter bc ,i like the adventure and helping people. I live in a country that is prone to fires in the summers (we keep wondering which area will burn this summer )and i like the idea of fighting to protect. However i am afraid that i am not motivated enough. I always meet people that have the same goal as me , to become a firefighter, and they share stories of how they experienced home fires ,and how their relatives are in the fire force. Should i just do smth else ? I have only experienced a wild fire once , and it was manmade . I always wondered "why would someone do smth like this ?" And " why doesn't he care about those who permanently live nearby? ""How can sb find this exciting?" . In my country EVERY summer ,we experience wild fires due to high temperatures, sometimes they may be manmade or accidental, so i guess I am up to date about how risky the job is .

I have been a volunteer firefighter and it is quite a story as I was a child. First "adopted" as a mascot (instead of a Dalmatian), I rode on fire trucks in parades, then, when I was 8 they started taking me to fires (there was a helmet and jacket kept in the truck), suit me up and put a hose in my hands. Later, in my thirties I was a reserve firefighter in a big city. Asked: "Why do you want to be a firefighter?" I would tell the story and explain "It's in my blood. It's part of who I am."

@@ViperVideo First, I am a boomer. Second, I was in the military in my 20's. Third, I didn't move to a big city until I was 30. Fourth, as a boomer, you have to go on a long waiting list to get a job as a firefighter or a cop. I utilized a couple of political connections just to get the reserve spot, which filled my fix. I did have a good job at the time, so, hotel manager on weekdays, firefighter on weekends.

Why? Because my dad was a firefighter for nearly 40 years. I grew up in the firehouse. But what was THE moment? I always asked him how his shift went. When I was younger, he wouldn't tell me much, but as I got older, I started getting the actual story of what happened. One was that a guy was riding in the back of a U-Haul and it was hit and pinned against a guardrail. A man who was riding in the back was pinned between the truck and the guardrail was still alive. My dad said he went and put his arm around him, knowing he wouldn't make it, but he talked to him while they tried to free him. My dad was the last person he would ever talk to. He offered him comfort in the last moments of his life. Unfortunately for me, my dad became the training officer, which meant I couldn't train under him. I didn't want to work in any other city than where my dad worked, so I never became a firefighter. It's the biggest regret of my life. He took me to the training center and showed me what a live fire was like in the Conex box and let me be the nozzle man. I've never felt more at peace in my life than when I had flames rolling over my head. I'll die always wishing I lived that life.

Yes-i apply the principles in videos from the past 4 years and answer 50 different questions breaking them down into “who, what, why, and how” questions. I walk you through 50 questions in about 90 minutes telling you how to answer each question-I give real world examples of other answers as well.
