I don’t have much luck with onions. So instead, I snip off the green tops and chop up for salad or soup. I never dig them up, so they come back every year.
Thats sounds interesting because I myself do not get good results with unions, garlic I get great crops. think its the weather we've had. onions are quite expensive to buy when you get bugger all out of them.
I do the same thing! Here in Oklahoma, we have wild onion/garlic things, so I dug up a lot and put them in my raised beds. I call them perpetual green onions
The Welsh Onion is a perennial variety and easily grown from seed or division.
I agree the other rhubarb is ornamental, can tell by the different jaggy shaped leaves. They can grow quite big. Maybe move it around the pond, it could give a good bit of shade for the pond and for the critters that live there.

I have a 10 rod allotment to myself, so because of you I too have been planting some flowers for cutting. ;-) Some of the guys tease me, but I have broad shoulders!
I use 1 litre pop bottles, cut the bottom of and they make a free cloche great for you taller plants

If they grow, those onions will flower. Planting them was a good idea. You could try collecting seed from them.😊
Yes, it is ornamental rhubarb. Tangucka Rheum palmatum var. tanguticum.
It's a Chinese ornamental Rhubarb and is poisonous if eaten, but has many medicinal benefits and used in Chinese medicine. I think it has pretty pink flowers.
Re: the onions, all you’ll get from putting them into the ground, is green shoots

Yes Emma, that is ornamental rhubarb and it is not edible. It can get quite large with red flowers on tall stems. I look forward to your many videos each week. I also struggle with many of the same problems as you have in my gardens.
Tip I've been using for slugs
Soak 4 garlic cloves in water for 24h until water is cloudy
Put in spray bottle and spray leaves of targeted plants in the evening once a week

I love child-like wonderment!! Becoming adults society sheds so much from us that is a source of joy. I love experiments and I've planted lots from my groceries - but I've never divided an onion like that. How exciting!! I can't wait to see if it works. 😊❤🎉

Someone mentioned using the dried branches from a bush or vine that has prickly bark. I think they said raspberry branches, placed around plants you really need to get growing. I think if those branches are split down the centre and then laid flat, it should work.
The onions will definitely deter carrot fly, I sow spring onion rows between carrot rows, works,and you get lots of spring onion as well
The onions will go to seed which you can take the seed from and use.
Good luck with the carrots, I would have pulled the rhubarb stalks and let the carrots grow on. Pumkins are looking great.

I have to believe that flies definitely can see you. They have more than one eye, they have tons of eyeballs looking at us, lol. They see us with no problem, and I can confirm they know where they are going. Here in Michigan, we have biting flies, and they have bitten me so many times this spring/summer so far. Hope I make it to Autumn lol 😅 The green stalked rhubarb is ornamental but the rhubarb you just transferred to a new spot is very much edible ( not the leaves ) A tip for you, if you find your rhubarb struggling in it's new spot, then plant it behind your shed. I've grown rhubarb for eons, and my first house it was behind our shed, and it loved it. The home I'm at, now it's behind the barn, and it's doing fantasticly. Those cloches you have, I got the same ones at the dollar store. Have you checked poundland ? maybe they have them also ? Thanks for a great video, have a good week 😊
Northumberland lotty girl here.....try sticky willy(Cleavers) around your Dahlias. I make little rings like daisy chains. The shugs do not like crossing over them cos theyre spiky as.
Another one of my slug protection methods is stick a pipe in the ground and water through it keeping the soil as dry as possible as always happy gardening Richardx

Hi Emma try coffee grounds iv read and seen they will stop slugs and snails there's a Cafe by me used to give away the used coffee in paper bags for the very purpose ..love your vids ❤❤
I've commented that a number of times. I've been doing it for years
For goodness sake just use modern pellets - ferric phosphate. It is certified organic. You do not see the results as the slugs hide and die, rather than on the surface
People get so scared of chemical names.
It is even an additive in bread, but for slugs it stops their digestion working totally
And rodents don’t like coffee grounds either.
Well Emma this episode definitely got off to a fly.. ing start . The onions will throw up tall seed stalks and form huge globes at the top . These are the seed heads . When they're fully dry shake into bags and you'll have enough seeds to sow thousands of onions next year . However if the original onions were hybrids then your results will be extremely variable. If you still have the onion net they came in the variety name should be there . Google to check if hybrid or not.

All you can eat buffet 😂😂 Yes it's been crazy slug year here in the Midlands too. But for me diatomaceous earth has worked. But like you said it needs to be reapplied each time it rains etc.
The onions that grew in my experience never bulb up again but produce green onion good to use, just snip off close to the ground as you need, and they keep coming back.
The green tops of onions can be cut and come again for salads and stir fries etc. Dried in a dehydrator and ground they make fantastic onion greens powder.
Ooh sounds so good. My Ninja air fryer has a dehydration option. I will try it 😊

that rubarb is a guinnea related to rhubarb but grows to 6 feet tall or more and is not ediable it likes a moist soil like near a pond

Yes!! I have no explanation for it but i put some (clear) plastic buckets and bags over some of my plants and they are barely nibbled on, if I remove the cover it will be eaten in one day.
Build a proper A Frame for the peas. As in get big Bamboo canes. Plenty of UA-cam videos around to show how to do this.
I found onions like that in my old veg box from christmas. I think they seperate like shalotts and divide into multiple onions. I've also been eating them as cut and come again spring onions. It's been very productive!

Hello Emma, I was at the dollar store today and was looking at that very same cloche. I thought to my self these are so weak it will not work. Then I saw this video so I will give it some more thought.

I know I will upset everyone but slug pellets are the answer…. the snails and slugs will find the dahlias when you have to remove the cloches. Sorry folks.

Your rhubarb from Wilko looks like a Cardom which ir ornamental,
Dead bug is an organic bait for slugs, snails, those pincher bugs not sure what they are but they eat all my plants especially my flowers and this helps a lot and lasts a long time. I get on Amazon it’s granules
Remember the snail pellets worked. Sprinkle then around the Dahlia bed! 🙂
If you don't have any cloches, cut the bottom of any plastic bottle (the 5l water bottles are brill). I even put a ring of copper tape around the bottom of some of the bottles too.
Tip for you, before giving Einstein his mealworms soak them in water overnight

Perhaps you could use your ornamental rhubarb leaves and/or stalks to make your own paper if they're fibrous? It could be a fun project.
I have been using the cloches overnight and taking them off during the day. At home that is.
Copper netting is working for me protecting my veg plants.
yep that other wilko plant looks more like an ornamental Rheum, wilko did sell normal rhubarb rhubarb as well but that isn't, I've moved Rhubarb in summer and got away with it just have to make sure it's watered enough, but not too much young rhubarb can be prone to rotting. def the pumpkin expert now your plants look way better than mine hopefully they'll get going now it's warmer
Also no clue on flys I do know bees have facial recognition and remember you up to a week!

Don’t mind be the rhubarb you will kill it and it won’t come back.just keep at it it will grow don’t worry,I had the same deal with mine and all my plot neighbours said you will kill it and won’t regrow.

Ornamental rhubarb is also known as Chinese rhubarb. as for your edible rhubarb, its a good time to split it.
The slugs and snails probably don't like the warm temperature under the cloche and are staying away. 😊
We got onion leave miner last year. Onions & leeks & garlic were always an easy crop Not grown any this year 😢. I know you can cover bed with fine mesh but come on I’m already covering all the brassicas & early peas & tomatoes. Don’t want my whole plot to look like a prison 😹
Keep putting the slug pellets out, and pick them off and put on salt when you see them. Eventually, you will start winning.
Agree with porridge oats. I would not use. I am not growing Dalias anymore

when you think what volume you have taken on of land (2 plots) and the amount of work that went with that.. now thats impressive.. its been a Disaster for me this year
I would take the damaged dahlias up and put them in pots.
rhubarb stems don't have to be red. I would harvest a few stems if I were you and cook them into a crumble and see if it tastes good. If you would like to try out my crumble recipe, it is amazing, I say humbly. (I make it for my mum who is pre-diabetic with heart issues and she is able to have it without a reaction, no cane sugar is used, but the ingredients bring out the sweetness of the fruit).
cut chunks of rhubarb and apples and put them into your cake tin. Mix in ground ginger (or fresh if you have it), cinnamon, nutmeg, coconut sugar and cut some fresh rosemary into it (yes rosemary).
Mix it all together so the fruit is all coated.
Put in the oven for 20 minutes at 180 (till the apples are golden brown and the sugar is bubbling.) Mix the fruit around every once in a while to make sure the sugar is coating the fruit.
For the crumble, in a food processer, mix in 100g butter, 100g flour, some walnuts, sprinkle of cinnamon, ground ginger, flax seeds, chai seeds, ground almond, coconut sugar. (basically raid the cupboard for naturally sweet ingredients and health beneficial ingredients).
Process the crumble, if needed, add either more butter or flour depending on the consistency of the crumble. Then pour over the fruit.
Take to the oven again and cook till the top of the crumble is golden brown. Bon appetite.
This is what I found when I googled it.
Ornamental rhubarb is not safe to eat, as its leaves contain oxalic acid which can be toxic. However, the stalks of ornamental rhubarb are edible and can be used in cooking. When consuming rhubarb, always make sure to:
Only consume the stalks, not the leaves.
Wash the stalks thoroughly.
Cook the rhubarb before eating it.
Could be a rheum (ornamental rhubarb)

The resolution of the fly is lower than human vision, their ability to detect movement and their wide field of view is their defence. Field of view is poor (hence they end up in spider webs) and bumping into you...
Emma I don’t think it’s slugs eating your Dahlias, I think it’s probably birds.
