@@FerdEdits This channel promotes treating **all** animals with respect. The ant only bit Mark because Mark is a larger creature and a potential predator to the ant. Brave Wilderness does good ecological work. I'm 25, in my graduate program, and still learning from them.
@SirPerfectful you sound pretentious.. better not bring that to the field. Animals bite because they bite. They don't need a reason. Trying to personify animals to make them seem moral is not good stewardship. It's just like the idiots who tell people that sharks only bite humans by mistake. No, they're apex predators and they'll bite anything that might provide a meal. There is no morality in nature. If you want to be a good steward once you leave the classroom and get into the field remember that honesty is the best tool
When you were describing the jaws, i was saying "man, that looks like a trapjaw ant", and when you revealed it straight up was a trapjaw, i was so surprized you've never heard of this thing before.
I feel like I knew about the trapjaw from something as a kid, but that also made me go "wait that's a real name?" It may just be me, but since my childhood was so skewed with vidger games and horror films, trapjaw sounded as made up as it did real and just to the back of my mind it went.
They probably already knew what it was but they wanted to build suspense and keep the viewer retention up so they revealed it somewhere in the middle of the video which is very smart
I remember playing with Leafcutter ants as a kid. Never once did they bite me. However, they do have spines on their back that do sting a bit. I also grew with Trapjaw ants. Also never bitten or stung. But it was fun putting sticks in front of them and hearing their jaws snap at it. You guys should go there at around May. You'll get to see the Leafcutter ant queens flying all over the place during their migration. They are huge, bigger than a quarter. Quite a spectacle!
growing up in Brasil we had a lot of those, and tbh their sting isn't so bad, but Mark didn't get the true trap jaw treatment, they usually latch up with the jaws and then sting multiple times and thats what hurts more
I’ve been both stung and bit by trap jaw ants before, and in case anyone’s wondering, the sting feels like a slightly worse bee sting and the bite feels like someone just flicked you. Neither are really painful.
I'm surprised they didn't know it was a Trapjaw Ant, considering all the other ants and insects they've dealt with. Would have thought it came up in any research over the years.
There is also another video of getting bit by the trap jaw ant. Apparently with no forceps or anything. If it bites you so fast and hard, the force launch them away from you like somewhat a good one or few inches.
holy that snapper almost looks like the toe biters or the waterbugs snapper it’s huge People who love this channel and have been watching for over 6 years 👇

this channel has been a huge inspiration to me as a kid i wanted to be a marine biologist. i had a fascination with sharks as I saw jaws when I was 4 years old.
Apparently the trap jaw ant is now ranked 2nd for fastest bite, after the Dracula ant, which is found in Madagascar. From what I've read though, the Dracula ant is not venomous, and although it can bite a person and give them a pinch, it's not particularly painful.
We have some big orangy-red bull ants in western east Texas. They weigh about 1-3/4 to 2 pounds each. Some people mistake them for coyotes when they do their mating call. My brother is an underwater welder for various energy companies and sometimes his old seal pup buddies. He told me that those Texas Bull Ants bites feel just like what a white shark bite feels like and if they sting you it's worse than when a hoop snake pokes you with his hard pointed tail. He also said that he would probably rather be gored by a Texas Horny Toad than bit by a Texas Bull Ant.
Those Leafcutter Guards are very underrated, the score needs to be bumped up by 2 at least I feel. Physical pain can be just as bad as venom especially the wound and blood it draws can get infected in that forest.
Trap jaw ants are awesome. My favorite species of ants. They not only use their jaws to hunt, but also to escape predators. A trap jaw ant may strike at a predator so that its mandibles bounce of, catapulting the ant over 20 cm away, giving it plenty of room to escape, and potentially crippling the predator. They can also strike at the ground, launching themselves into the air. That's how it managed to evade you like it did, and eventually "teleport" itself off of the table. Also, if you watch them move around when they're exploring, or on the prowl, they have this really interesting way of moving about. Sort of curious and inquisitive.
2:00, I would crush it with my other hand and I believe that would stop the ant from biting. 5:50, My guess is the "Trapjaw Ant" (I did not look anything up.) I was going to say "Trap Ant" but the "jaw" made more sense to throw in there. Looks like a bulldog ant though.
