- Another fantastic Bob Dylan cover! I have added this as a Video Response for those who would like to hear what I think are the 2 best Dylan covers ever, even though they are of different styles:
As a friend often says, "Have Mercy!". One of the most beautiful versions of this song ever. Jerry Douglas' dobro work is exquisite. Even those who do not enjoy bluegrass can hear the beauty here. (It is more mountain music than bluegrass.) From Tim O'Brien's album, "Red on Blonde" most recently released in 2006. This haunting tune is a must hear for anyone. Enjoy!
Tim O'Brien With The O'Boys:
Tim O'Brien - vocals, mandolin, fiddle, bouzouki
Scott Nygaard - guitar
Mark Schatz - bass, clawhammer banjo, ham bone, background vocals.
Personnel:
Tim O'Brien - vocals, bouzouki, mandolin, fiddle
Mark Schatz - vocals, bass, clawhammer banjo, ham bone
Glen Zankey - vocals
Kathy Mattea - vocals
Mollie O'Brien - vocals
Bob Tyler - vocals
Celeste Krenz - vocals
Jerry Douglas - guitar, lap steel guitar, resonator guitar
Scott Nygaard - guitar
Charlie Cushman - banjo
Mark Graham - harmonica

Red on Blonde is one of the best albums of the 1990s. Seriously.
nycdude999 Truly sublime, from an old Aussie downunder
I can agree
My favorite Tim O’Brien album.
One of the greatest singing voices in the business today
it's one of my absolute favorites. Reel Time w/ Darrell Scott and Tim O'Brien's collaboration is also a great album. I just think Tim is the most authentic we have since Jim Croce. He reaches a certain place.in your soul with his excellent talents Singing and Playing.
I just nominated this for 100 Best Dylan Covers; love it!
What a great great version of this great great Dylan song.
I keep coming back to this, year after year. I could listen to it endlessly.
love the little country twang to his voice. fabulous.
@rickbandana
I have purchased this CD over ten times.. if you let someone borrow it, you can't possibly ask for it back. "It's usually a life changer". Keep up the great work Mr. O'Brian. Thank you Bobby Zim. as well. - David W. Molde
Awesome.
Bob's awesome.
Tim's awesome.
The song is awesome.
Awesome.
Bob's a Lightening Rod
Tim's a good instrument.
Jerry Douglas pushes them all closer to glory.
This is one of those you try to explain to people who don't LOVE Bob Dylan and you just can't and there are so many. So many.
Dylan did almost nothing with this, yet it is one of his most covered. This is beautiful, I have listened to it many times.
I am from IRAN. I can understand your language a little. But i enjoyed of Tim Tim o'Brien o'Brien song's and his book about Vietnam war
This is a breathtaking cover of a wonderful song. So glad I found it.
Best cover of this song I've heard. Had the privilege of seeing Tim and his sister Molly at a show a year or two back - one of the finest evenings of music I've ever experienced. Thanks for putting this one out here.

I think it's wonderful and am so glad you enjoyed it also. Thank you so much for leaving your comment. It is much appreciated. I love his album with Darrell Scott done live at their kids school. I put several of the songs up. You get to hear much more musical interplay. p.s. I'm tired. I think it's Darrell. Something like We Usually Sound Much Better Than This...? My best to you, Moppet
You are more than welcome. I'm so glad you found it. I haven't been lucky enough to see Tim with Molly, but I finally did get to see him this past fall. What a musician! It just seems so simple and just keeps flowing out of him. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. I appreciate it very much, Moppet
I love Tim and his sister Molly. Tim has also done some great duets with Kathy Mattea.
Amo o TIM bried. Gosto Muito de música country americana.👏👏👏🎵🎼🎸💖💖😍😍 ILove You , TIM BRIED.
Great song and great singer.
I got this CD when it came out (I think there was a small blurb in the LA Times about it.) The album is really good and this particular cut is, I think, my favorite Dylan cover ever. That covers a hell of a lot of ground, too. And yes, Jerry Douglas' dobro is stupid good.
Love it - Instruments as well as vocals... Grand!
Exquisite. Love the harmony.
Another fantastic Bob Dylan cover! The playing is incredible. Enjoy!
wow--mule just found this---been following tim and gang since 83'---what a treat---thanx moppet
linda theobald I'm glad you found this. Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed it. I appreciate that very much. I'm organizing my music on my Channel & am putting in a section labeled "Tim O'Brien", so if you want to check in a few days, it will be easy to find his music on my site. I'm in Blues right now. My best to you for a happy 2015, Moppet
just remind us
linda theobald Hi. I just found your comment to 'remind you'. I need a reminder to remind. :))
I have a Tim O'Brien Playlist on my Channel now. If you check it out, I hope you find some treasures. My best, Moppet
Very good version, slow country,
Great!!
I'm late in thanking you, but wanted you to know I appreciate your comment on Tim O'Brien. His The Blackest Crow is a Civil War song & quite nice. It's not as country, but I love his work anyway. I love the entire album Songs From the Mountain. Please stop by anytime. My best to you, Moppet
Great voice and sound with the Emerton 2 speaker
@76smittenkitten Thank you for listening. I love this song and this version touches me to my core. I love the instrumentation used also. Come anytime. Thank you for commenting...that is a special treat! My best to you. Moppet (Barbara Jean)
That guitar sounds awesome in dropped d .
@statjay So very glad you stopped by. You have heard this music longer than me! I can't get enough of this song. I think Douglas is just about incredible in everything I've heard him in, but something just 'jells' with him, O'Brien, & this song. I don't catch on to 'new' music much anymore. Please feel free to give me a heads up if you find something of any genre that you think is great. I'll find it about 10 years down the line on my own. So very glad you commented.! Thank you, Moppet (Barbara)
@cucujus1 I am so glad you found this version. I love the song also and fell in love with Tim O'Brien's version. ( To tell the truth I haven't found a version that I don't like. This song is so beautiful and touching.) Thank you so much for commenting. It means a lot to me to know that some do like the music I am putting up. My best to you, Moppet (Barbara)
Love it si much
damn great song, love it thanks... COA ...
Greeting from Brazil. I subscribe in your channel. Happy New Year from Brazil.
as good as it gets.
@rickbandana I am so glad you enjoyed this song. I thought you'd like it after your comment on Bonnie Raitt's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue". Since you thought that was a good cover, I'm glad you enjoyed this also even though it's a much different style than her's. Thank you so much for letting me know. I appreciate that a lot. (Sometimes I never get to find out...) My best to you as always, Moppet
Молодец Тим О'Брайен.отлично
@nycdude999 I'm running a bit late on replying to your comment. I have never been lucky enough to see Tim O'Brien live! I do love Songs From the Mountains. It sounds like I sent it to you. I don't often send music to others I don't know. Hope you didn't mind. So glad you're a fan & I do think Red on Blonde is fantastic! Thanks so much for updating me. Moppet
@MyMoppet52 I am a big Dylan fan, but I also appreciate Tim O-Brien. I had seen him perform at The Bottom Line in the early 1990s, he's a great talent. I have several albums of his including Songs From the Mountains.
Super!
Americana at its best.
Nate Herman Thanks so much for sharing Tim. I am glad when the music gets more fans. I do have a really good Tim O'Brien Playlist on my Channel, if you enjoy his music. It has all types of his songs. If you look around, I hope you find some treasures. My best, Moppet
MyMoppet52 Will do!
@nycdude999 I agree with you, but I also don't know why you commented. If it's cause you love Dylan, my next comments won't mean much to you. If it's cause you like O'Brien's sound I also think his "Songs From the Mountians" and "The Crossing" are incredibly good also! I love the songs on all three albums. Many of them leave me on the edge of my chair & breathless to this day. Thank you so much for your comment. I appreciate it greatly! My very best to you, Moppet (Barbara)
I believe Jerry Douglas is playing a Weissenborn guitar and not a dobro. I mean it is played like a dobro but it has a woody sound.
Farewell Angelina
Robert Zimmerman
Farewell Angelina
the bells on the crown
Are being stolen by bandits
I must follow the sound
The triangle tingles
And the music plays slow
But farewell Angelina
The night is on fire
And I must go
There is use in talking
And there's no need for blame
There is nothing to prove
Everything still is the same
A table stands empty
By the edge of the stream
But farewell Angelina
The sky is changing colors
And I must leave
The jacks and the queens
They foresake the courtyard
Fifty-two gypsies
Now file past the guard
In the space where the deuce
And the ace once ran wild
Farewell Angelina
The sky is folding
I'll see you after a while
See the crosseyed pirates
Sit perched in the sun
Shooting tin cans
With a sawed off shot gun
And the corporals and the neighbors
Clap and cheer with each blast
But farewell Angelina
The sky is trembling
And I must leave fast
King Kong, little elves
And the roof-tops they dance
Valentino-type tangos
While the heroes clean hands
Shut the eyes of the dead
Not to embarass anyone
Farewell Angelina
The sky is flooding over and I must be gone
The camoflaged parrot
He flutters from fear
When something he doesn't know about
Suddenly appears
What cannot be imitated
Perfect must die
Farewell Angelina
The sky is flooding over
And I must go where it is dry
Machine guns are roaring
The puppets heave rocks
At misunderstood visions
And at the faces of clocks
Call me any name you like
I will never deny it
But farewell Angelina
The sky is erupting
And I must go where it is quiet
Thank You "MyMoppet52," for posting this sweet cover of Robert Zimmerman's lost classic. Please Be Well, and Stay Strong, Will
RIDETHESUNSHINE thanks so much for your lyrics on Farewell Angelina. Thanks also for listening & leaving a hello. My best to you, Moppet
MyMoppet52 Bless You for bringing this cover to the surface for all to enjoy!!! All My Best to You and Yours in The Years to Come... Will
im not one for this stuff i like gillen welch and you so take that as a complement cuz i hate new school country like toby and stuff but this yes sir be sure to know ill listen to this till i die
I heard Tim 30 years ago and heard him criticize our Mideast involvement. How could someone so real and deep be so wrong - I thought. Took me decades to catch up. Go figure.
Great musician. Authority on geopolitics? Not so much. Personally, I think entertainers, like pro athletes should stick to what they do best, and it's generally not setting foreign policy. That's just my take on it, your milage may vary.
Agree with nycdude1
Didnt know.. this version is better than the original one.. (my opinion)
I loved Bob Dylan for years, but the more I listen to covers of his songs, the more I get the feeling that Dylans songs actually sound better when done by other musicians. He's the creator, the poet, but it's up to others to arrange it and sing it. Surely people like Tim O'Brien or Roger Mcguinn sing A LOT better than Dylan, yet they lack his creativity.
Agreed. -- Don't forget all the great covers of Dylan's songs by the great Joan Baez.
Oh yes! Joan Baez added great flavor to the covers. Tim O'Brien is more straightforward in that regard.
Yes other people did so well with his songs. As Mitch Jayne of the Dillards once said "he (Bob Dylan) sounds like a dog with his leg caught in barbed wire." He writes great songs but is an a&&hole. He is so full of himself it makes you want to puke. He might have a right to be egotistical but not to that extent. Joan did him so much good and he cast her off like ................ well you finish it.
Those who interfere in others marriages, especially when children are involved, do not have my respect--regardless of any other 'talents' people attribute to them.
OBJECTION ! No lack with Tim.
Who's the harmony singer?
I think it's his sister, Mollie O'Brien.
like him alot - I´v done that one to ua-cam.com/video/eNJoBSsBH4g/v-deo.html
Sounds like draft dodgers on the way to Canada
