KYC Crisis: Financial Death instead of Financial Inclusion

- The JAM Trinity (Jan-Dhan, Aadhaar, Mobile) was supposed to bring financial inclusion to India’s underserved communities. But for millions, Aadhaar-based verification has become a barrier rather than a bridge. This video, based on Sucheta Dalal’s article, uncovers the real struggles faced by rural Indians whose bank accounts are frozen due to mismatches and errors in their Aadhaar-linked information. Watch as we delve into the systemic issues causing financial exclusion, and the urgent need for reform in India's KYC and Aadhaar systems.

Agree ma'am.
One important thing is Govt. should ensure marginalised people to have access to free incoming calls.
Mobile is quite essential to get jobs. But, the marginalised people could not "recharge" their mobile and lose access.
To maintain one account(say bank account), you need mobile.
For aadhar you need mobile.
For gas connection, you need mobile.
For getting subsidies, you need mobile.
For getting loans, you need mobile.
But, the marginalised are not able to recharge their mobile and end up adding someone else's mobile number.
This leads to frauds. Having a mobile (at least free incoming) without recharge is quite important.
Govt. needs to realise this and make sure via TRAI.
Yes, this is the only solution. Free incoming calls at least. We cannot go back on technology.
Incoming calls & SMSs
Everything is OTP based these days.

Being a PSU banker working in a deep rooted rural area I encounter many people on daily basis with these mismatched information and even me who is new to this job dont know how the hell the differences in name occurred but somehow we have to work tirelessly to correct each and every information so that their ckycr id can be generated.
All the PSU banks are very understaffed and there are its a herculean task for bankers too as multiple kyc problems occurs in single day and these documents needed to get approved by higher authorities. We banker becomes the victim of rage of customers.
You have pointed out that freezing accounts prevents them from getting govt benefit which is wrong as maximum banks mark debit freeze which means they can withdraw the amount from their account after getting their proper kyc done.
Apart from customers, bankers are also paying a huge price of these errors in identity cards as we all know how many circulars are there for kyc and we bankers are already crunched with targets on daily basis because govt wants bank to earn more and more profit so that they can get dividend and distribute free money and ration so that they can get vote in exchange.
As a fellow banker, i fully understand and support your view

This is indeed a very valid topic. Bankers are dumb and in the name of policy we are being exploited. As you rightly said, as simple as which doc is a basis for rest of IDs, and what is last name, middle name and first name, and in which order to write. Which can be abbreviated as initials or cannot be. No two agencies have same understanding.
I am dumb stuck now by understanding how rural poor are dealing with this.
However this is serious issue as we all love our hard earned moeny and expect the system's will give us money on rainy day instead freezing account.

In addition to all the challenges, Aadhaar has a different naming pattern, with first, middle, and last names, while PAN follows a system where the last name is important and does not allow initials in their name database. This creates further difficulties, especially for South Indians, as they are often clueless about how to proceed. In many cases, banks and financial institutions repeatedly request KYC, which gives room for scammers to impersonate bank representatives and mislead innocent people into initiating fraudulent KYC processes. The government should adopt standardized naming guidelines across all platforms before requesting people to cooperate.
I agree with you. Many South Indian names especially from TN do not have surnames. Many use their father's name as surname. This creates a huge problem while applying for driving license, passport etc. Eventually father's name becomes one's first name. In the case of passport if surname is not mentioned, it gets recorded as LNU (last name unknown). Also, Indian names can be spelled differently in English. For example Shrinivasan can be spelled as Srinivasan or Sreenivasan etc. This also creates hurdles. I agree there is a need for creating a uniform naming code.
I closed 3 credit card accounts because of this.

There’s another problem: when I went to get my 94 year old father’s passport renewed, I was made to postpone the appointment and take him to an Aadhaar centre to get a “signature verified” certificate. What the hell is that. It got done, but he had to climb the stairs again. Oof the bureaucracy is all pervasive.
Yes definitely agree. Pls spread this as much as possible.

Absolutely correct, data inconsistencies is a challenge for us in the cities too. I just can't imagine the challenges our country men will go through in villages.
Thank you for this, I live in the rural areas, and I can assure you, the poor, the marginalized, and the poorly educated are living a nightmare. Mam really has the pain of going through hundreds of KYC every month and they want person to come to bank, fill the form and what not.
Biggest problem is that we need to take a day off from work just to visit the bank for any documentation work. Now because of easy transfer of funds online we don't have to visit very often. Another issue is that in my case I do not use a middle name but some govt systems automatically add my father's name as my middle name. Also RBI needs to make a standard form for everything (account opening, basic FD opening, death claims, KYC, etc) for all banks.

The tone of MAX INSURANCE for KYC is threatening. They don't do proper communication but suddenly threaten their policy holders as it's customers lapses. The problem is when they allowed banks as Marketing Agents the after sales service is lost. My name was misspelt on my Voter ID long time ago. Although it was corrected upon request without any problems and delay, I realised long after that the names are entered into computer by local people who are doing so on a software IN LOCAL/REGIONAL language. AND that software then spells it in English which the operator does not bother to check as for them the name in the vernacular language is correct. This has led to massive problems.
GOI should not blindly implement western standard & thinking for Indian way of life. It simply doesn’t fit. If it ever wants to, then they should give ample time before making it mandatory & also have tons of correct methods built into the system by way of proper legal regulations.
My name was mangled beyond recognition and 59 was changed to 60 . I think that this is done deliberately to make people come back again so as to make money in contracts .

KYC by banks is a real pain in the @$$. I have a person just to do various KYCs of banks as the banks want to do KYC every 2 years. Besides, KYC by banks compliances for ROC, Income Tax, GST, DGFT, BMC, Customs all add up to an entrepreneur wasting 30-40% of his time in all such unproductive activities. Our policymakers just do not realize how much this is costing the country.
Real problems faced by people should be addressed for growth of the Country rather than the matters of faith which appears has no relation with development.
