  • In this video, I show a process I like to use for replacing broken shifter knob buttons on Volvo P80-chassis cars with automatic transmissions (850/V70/S70/C70).
    Parts used: Swedish Car Parts 9161356 www.swedishcar...
    Tools used: Needle nose pliers, small flat head screwdriver.
    Time required: 20-30 minutes.

    Thanks for uploading, this totally helped me out. The dealer quoted $130 for them to fix it, and I got it fixed for $15 and it only took about 15 minutes. I found that I didn't need the screwdriver to hold up the upper leg of the spring, I just needed it to pry it out of the recess and I was able to hold it in position with one finger while I used the other hand to put on the new shifter button.

    Used on my 2000 S70. This was very helpful and a very good video. Explained it all, with little tips/watch outs, good camera angle. Thank you AKJeeper!

    It worked … first I was not sure, what you’re talking about. But following your video, while repairing it, helped a lot!
    Thanks!
    Volvo 850 - it worked 100% the way it showed.

    This looks like its going to come in handy real soon. My button on my 2000 Volvo C70 has been getting stuck for quite a while now, but today is the first time it has been depressed and hasn't released with a little effort...it didn't seem like too big of a deal until I pulled up to my driveway and couldn't get the key out of the car. I think the issues are related, and I'm watching this from my driver's seat right now. Guess it is time to ask my parents if they can help me order that button you were talking about.

    Thanks for this, these things come with no instructions, how anyone would not snap something without UA-cam I don’t know. Yours is by far the best video on the subject because you don’t rush. I found that to pin to be the tricky part, remembering that it needs to sit to the right not centrally, it looks odd.

    That spring is so confusing. You could easily think its purpose is to press the button outwards when it's actually pulling it inwards. Thanks for this detailed video, it helped me complete this task.

    This is a VERY GOOD VIDEO on repairing the Volvo Shift knob. AK Jeeper is a very qualified mechanic teaching mechanics not English (lol). I was a writer I don't teach mechanics. Thanks AK Jeeper, with your excellent video I was able to repair one of my 4 volvos MYSELF!

      @AKJeeper  4 роки тому +1

      There's always going to be haters, for whatever reason. They may not like how I edited the video, the sound of my voice, my camera angles, video length...anything. I rarely get feedback from the people who dislike my videos, so I'll never know how to improve. The important part to me is that people find the video useful and that it's generally well-received by the majority of my viewers.

    Your video inspired me to purchase the part and save the dealer's $567 quote (was told the whole unit needed to be replaced). I hope the technique is the same for my 2002 Volvo S60 automatic transmission T24. What's your input - Thank you!

  • @theskatemonk
    @theskatemonk 5 років тому

    thanks for the helpful video! i successfully installed the button and now have a functional shifter knob. when i put it on in the car though, it seems that the black push knob that engages the button snapped and is now too short to push the button out. it’s about half the length as the car in this video. any tips?? i would really appreciate it.

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  5 років тому +1

      Are you talking about the part protruding from the shifter shaft (as shown in 10:30 of the video)? I don't remember right off the top of my head if this part is easily replaced, I'll have to look the next time I have a Volvo in the shop. You can try super glue on the broken part (if it is still intact enough for reuse) or facbricate some sort of extension that would be the correct length and diameter to engage with the shifter knob button. Otherwise you probably need to replace that part. It might be a while before I get another Volvo in so I can get you more detailed information, but when I do I'll follow up with you here.

    Good afternoon, my friend, very good video and explanation, but in my volvo 850 the handle does not loose, I tried to pull it up and it does not come out, could you tell me how to do it?

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  4 роки тому

      Sometimes these shifter handles can be on very tight and require quite a bit of force to release. There have been a couple of these where I stood from the back seat area and pulled from there for more leverage.

    The button on our 1999 XC70 stays in the 'pushed in' position and only slowly works its way back out after a gear change. It feels like it needs lubricating. Could a WD40 be shot into the button without damaging anything? Good video.

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  6 років тому +1

      The shifter knob and button are made of plastic/rubber. I don't think that WD-40 would damage anything. Most of the time, if the button is sticky, it's a sign that the spring or knob itself is damaged. Have you tried sticking a screwdriver in the knob to see if the button works smoothly (I show this 'test' at 9:52 in this video)?

    • @JeffersonMartinSynfluent
      @JeffersonMartinSynfluent 6 років тому

      I was too much of a chicken to pull the assembly off so I just shot some WD-40 into the detent button and the shifter came back to life like new. Thanks.

    when the moment remove the knob, i press the pedals service ???

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  7 років тому

      No. You only need to push on the brake pedal (service brake) to shift out of Park. I like to shift into 1st gear (Low Range) so that the knob is in a position where I can remove it easier. You do not need to push on the brake pedal to remove the knob. The knob can sometimes be very tight. Be careful. When the knob releases, sometimes it can surprise you. Don't hurt yourself.

      @@AKJeeperGreat video. I've pulled a lot of these, and sometimes pulling the knob threatens to give me a hernia. I take a long cheater bar, and loop a short rope around the knob and the bar, and brace one end of the bar against the steering wheel or column. Pulling up on the other end of the bar levers the knob out without any pulled muscles or broken bones.

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  5 років тому

      Stuart McRae Great tip! I’ve pulled so many of these that I’ve kind of developed a muscle memory/movement and often make it look easier than is really is. Hopefully someone will find your tip helpful. Thanks for sharing!

    Please if you are going to do an online video use proper grammar. You don't "go ahead" and do anything. Helpful video just the same.

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  6 років тому

      Unfortunately, it seems that in this video, I said some things repetitively like the "go ahead" that you pointed out. Yes, it's a bad habit...but it's also the result of doing these videos completely unscripted, and unplanned/unrehearsed. I've never been very good at speaking in front of people (which includes videos), but it is something I am working on. I film these videos when I am working on vehicles, if I have extra time to do so. I hope that you still found some value in the video. As far as I'm aware, no other video shows how to do this job the way I do it, and I feel my technique is easier for DIY'ers than what you normally see published or filmed. I've tried my absolute best to make sure to get good clear footage with the equipment I have. Thank you for your feedback. Have a good day!

    What if the button is broken and you can’t shift it out of park?

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  6 років тому

      I would attempt to remove the shifter knob with the transmission in the park position. The reason why I take it out of park and put it in low range is so that I could have more leverage on the knob. It can still be removed in the park position, it's just a little harder at that angle.

  • @davidm3894

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  4 роки тому

      I don't usually advise it, but in this case I would probably try to pull the shifter handle out from the park position. Just be careful not to hit the dashboard, stereo, climate control knobs, rear view mirror, or yourself when releasing the shifter handle from the park position.

      Pull the knob off and push the button down. It my also shift just by pushing the over ride button beside it.
